I finally am ready to share the playroom makeover with you all!
I am so excited about it-it’s my new favorite room to hang out in, which is handy, cause the kids kinda like it too.
What are the ODDS?
I wanted it to be cute and quirky-playful, of course, with a touch of elegance. I had some quirks I had to work with, as this is an add-on sunroom, but in the end I’m really happy with it!
First, we installed trim around the french doors and baseboards, and I spent 5+ sweaty hours painting it all white.
I also painted sections of the ceiling mint-for a striped effect.
let’s start the tour, shall we?
I think the little “hello friends” felt banner I made might just be my fave thing in here (although I’ll probably say that a lot in this post)
the cube storage we got years ago, at Lowes, but the felt bins are new, from Land of Nod. (also the blue and yellow baskets on the top)
the rug I got at a great price from RugsUSA, and I LOVE it. (the 8×10 size)
It’s the perfect color and really soft, plus it’s reversible.
they’re not paying me to say this, promise…haha!
they are always having sales…they’re shipping can be slow, but I’ve always been happy purchasing from them, which I have 3 times.
the bins hold (l-r) baby doll items, soft books and small toys, Mr. Potato head toys, Lincoln Logs, Bristle Blocks, and something I don’t remember. loL! (affiliate links)
on top are blocks, puzzles, mega bloks, and our bouncy balls + wooden train
the cute baby cradle, and a cabbage patch kid my friend Tracy gave us!
my childhood desk resides near this (useless) door, and inside we store the felt board’s animals, etc.
rocking horse from Costco 5 years ago..
this is one of my favorite toys ever! My dad made it for me when I was young and horse crazy.
It’s a stable, with room for 12 horses, fences, etc…I spent many hours playing with this when I was a kid, and now it’s a priceless addition to my girls playroom!
here’s a bit of the quirkiness I was talking about before. Since this was an add on-the master bathroom window looked out into the playroom.
It was frosted and not very useful to us inside anyways.
Not much light came through. so I knew I wanted to cover it up from the playroom side.
I had to look for a LOOOOOONG time to find something to hang there. I debated on making my own art, a fabric hanging…everything.
Finally I settled on the idea of a poster and started looking through the Disney section of this site.
Since we love Disney I figured it would be fun to honor that obsession love.
I found this adorable vintage-style Cinderella movie poster that was THE perfect size. and also like $22. SCORE.
I bought the poster hanger for the top and bottom (being a cheapskate and not framing it lol) for $5, and I love how that makes it pop on the wall!
I also repainted my dress up storage a pretty shade of coral.
(in that post you can see how BADLY the walls needed to be painted and trim installed lol)
for a pop of color and whimsy, I bought these plastic wall flowers and spray painted them yellow, then stuck them up on the wall.
I created a little reading nook with this small bookcase (Target, quite a few years ago)…one of my thrifted globes up top and some thrifted artwork as well.
right next to the bookshelf is our rollie pollie pillow-perfect for snuggling in with a good book!
you saw a little peek of it above-here’s our giant chalkboard!
Also hiding something…ha! behind it is the door to our laundry room.
(this door has never been used, except when we got robbed…so even more of a reason to cover it up!)
we bought a 1/2″ piece of plywood, got Lowes to cut it to size for us, then gave it 5-6 coats of chalkboard paint and nailed it up around the edges.
I LOVE it, and while it had some cute playroom rules up for awhile, I think I love the giant birds and girls holding hands better.
(charlotte says there is a hang glider in there somewhere too.)
did that unicorn catch your eye? quirkiness galore amiright?
I found this guy (named Corny, by Charlotte) on Etsy, and at first I wasn’t sure about it…was it too weird for us?
I asked the girls if they liked him and they started begging for one! So they pushed me over the edge. and we all love him.
(except Rory. He doesn’t get it)
You can see the little felt banner I made swooping around-just cut felt pieces and sewed them together.
our collection of stuffies live in that pink basket.
You’ve seen the dollhouse here, and you can read about the artwork in the rollie pollie post.
Also, the dollhouse sits on this table.
let’s swing over to the other side: still with me?
I’ve posted about our play kitchen and recovered couch before. Also, the play canisters.
this mixer was one of C’s birthday presents this year and all the girls LOVE it.
side note about this little couch: I debated about sewing another cover for it since it’s seen better days.
However, this little couch was kinda the catalyst for my blog back in the day.
having this project featured helped me grow my blog soo much, so I couldn’t change it now…I’ve got a soft spot for it.
I just hand-sewed up the ripped parts and gave it a fluff.
(also a reason not to sew a new one, it’s a beast to get on and off)
You and me, little couch, we’s tight.
I made this little felt banner with the Peter Pan quote one night-super quick project!
above the kitchen I hung these cute alphabet cards
Found these vintage teal school chairs on Ebay ($70 plus free shipping for the pair!)
and the wooden folding table.
made the little hot air balloon with an ikea container and this tutorial.
One of my favorite additions was this bright and colorful teepee from Land of Nod.
I debated on whether or not to make my own but in the end laziness won out.
I made a couple of quick large pillows to pile inside and the girls have loved hauling them around and of course, jumping on them.
pillow inserts, (I got 28×28″ and 24×24″ pillows) and polka dot fabric, stripe fabric
PHEW you made it! thanks for reading to the end.
If you didn’t that’s ok I still love ya.
But you wouldn’t know that cause you didn’t finish this post.
Your loss.
Muwah!
Love the playroom. I have been wanting to re-do my grands playroom! This might be just the inspiration I need. Thanks so much! My grands would LOVE this play room! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
It’s AMAZING!!!!
Well, no wonder it’s your favorite room….it’s gorgeous! I love all the little details and the colors you used throughout! I wanna go play in there! I
Um can I come live with ya? I’ll keep it all cleaned up and tidy, promise mom. LOL You are an amazing crafter, mom, and sewist (is that even a word?) Beautiful job doesn’t even begin to describe it! Pat yourself on the back & grab an extra bag of chocolates~reward for job well done 🙂
Whoa! This is just incredible! I want all of it 🙂
UGH! I wanted to pitch our little couch and now you have given me a good reason NOT to do it! Yes, as well loved as that little couch is now I realize that I can just recover it. Thanks for the idea… kind of. Awesome job on the playroom!!!
I can’t decide what my favorite part of the room is but I’m leaning towards the adorable wall flowers! Those are so quirky, I love them!
Well done!!
GAH!! This is SO cute!! My kids would love a playroom like this!!
Question – the horses in your playhouse/barn from when you were little, are they thrifted, or from when you were little? I had a herd of the same horses from when I was little and I would love to find a place where I could get some!
they are from when I was little…sorry I don’t have a source for ya!
Fantastic. What a great, bright, cheery space for your girls to play in. Love the Cinderella sign and the dress-up station!
Love it! Sun rooms (and sometimes brightly decorated attics) are always the best play rooms! I love how bright and cheery this room is for your girls is! Good job! 🙂
Looks amazing, Jess!! I love all the light you get in that room as well. I bet everyone just loves it……how could you not? Great job!!!
This is so so awesome Jess! You have such a great sense of style, and I love everything about this room!
just so cute jess!! all of it is so pretty. Wish you were my mom. 😉
I love this room! That chalkboard it too fun, and I love the felt banner that goes above it. I love the organization too…. does it stay that way? My girls’ room seems like it’s trashed 20 minutes after we clean it.
no, it doesn’t. you should see it today! lol. But since getting rid of a lot of toys that weren’t being used, it’s alot quicker to clean up!
I just love this little playroom. My daycare kids would love this. You gave me some great inspiration for re-doing the playroom for them. It is so cheery and sunny! Job well done. 🙂
Everything is so adorable! Question about that chalkboard.. You used plywood, does it have a smooth texture after painting it with the chalkboard paint? Or still that uneven plywood texture? I’ve considered plywood many times but just wasn’t sure how it would turn out.
it’s still a bit uneven but all the coats of paint help to make it smoother-it doesn’t really affect the way the chalk writes though!
i love it! so many fun touches – it looks awesome. fun that you took a room you use so much and made it extra special (for you and the girls to hang out in). nice work.
Love this fun room and all the fabulous colors! That desk of yours since younger days, so cute! I love the yellow color. Also love the blue doll house, the hot air balloon (i made one for my office), and the teepee!
What a GREAT space. I wish we had that much space 🙂
