Project run and play week 4-ballerine de corail

I had SO much fun with this week….and so did Sadie!ย  The theme was ” Spring Formal Wear”….and after all, what’s more fun than dressing up like a princess? A ballerina I guess! She even got to wear a little make up-she was in heaven when I told her that she could. She also relished getting her hair curled. Such a girly girl…I love that kiddo. ๐Ÿ™‚

So as usual I went through a few sketches and wrecked muslins (Kristin knows about the wonder woman bodice fiasco…remind me to post that someday so ya’ll can have a good laugh…) but I finally settled on this look, which also evolved as I was sewing, as it often does! I found this amazing coral fabric on clearance at Walmart of all places ($2 a yard or something ridiculous) and paired it with some stretch polka dot lace. (Joanns) It’s a somewhat simple look, but has some lovely feminine and delicate details.

ย I created a ballerina neckline with the lace and coral fabric, which then tapers down in a V shape on the back, and closes with some vintage white buttons with a fun bumpy circle texture to them. (hard to see but cool!)

Then I made a “bubble” circle skirt! I just love how it gathers and sways when she moves. (circle skirt part using MADE’s tutorial)

For the accessories, I made a floral sash and headband, using the wrong side of the fabric for some contrast! I cut tons of circles for petals, then basically burned my fingerprints off by melting the edges just so. The things we do….then Iย  arranged, layered them, and stitched them in place, then hand stitched on each tiny pearl in the center. The material was some sort of satin stretch blend, and it was perfect for this sort of thing. I loved working with it!

I did the same for the headband…just made the flowers slightly smaller and 3 of them. The sash is removable and the flower pins on…good thing cause I might just have to “borrow” it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I hope you like this look as much as we do!ย

Oh, and I found the tutorial for the backdrop here! For the gold ones I simply cut them in the zig zag shape I wanted before cutting the strips. Easy, cheap, and high impact!

And, of course…Sadie’s faces! This girl is on fi-yah!

  12. Love this dress. I love the bubble, as it is simple but still full of impact. And I don’t normally like the bubble look.
Please, please, pretty please with a cherry on top will you do a pattern or tutorial or something for this dress?
Also, can this translate to an adult dress do you think? I love it!

  13. It looks amazing. And what a stunning model! She is growing up and turning into a beautiful little girl.

  14. Hi! I also wondered if you were planning on doing a tutorial for this dress in the future. Please!!! It is so beautiful! I also loved your PR&P look from last week and would love a tutorial on how you made that little red cardigan from an adult cardigan. I tried to find a tutorial the other day because I’d like to do something similar, but there didn’t seem to be a real good one out there. You’ve done such a great job on PR&P!

  16. Absolutely gorgeous I am dying to make bubble dresses for my twin girls!!

  17. You are totally my style, I’m not a big on formal wear and prefer casual, cotton fabrics for things I make and purchase for my girls, but this is beautiful! I’d put it on both of my littles!

  18. This dress is just so lovely! And doesn’t the cheapest fabric make the best flowers like that with the melted edges? Great job!

  19. Ok, I have to learn to make sure Ella is not in the room when I look at these posts. She saw Sadie’s dress and now informs me she wants one just like it! Ha! This is beautiful, Jess!

  29. What a sweet princess ballerina in her ball gown!

  30. This is my absolute favorite… I love how graceful and dressed-up it is, while still being perfect for a young girl. Love that you used a circle skirt for the bubble, instead of gathered, and I love the V shape in the back. Love the flowers you added, and the shoes are the perfect finishing touch. It’s beautiful. =)

  31. You did an incredible job on this dress. I wish I had the patience for things like this..but generally I don’t! Thanks for sharing!!

    Grace Kathryn

  32. It’s all perfect and gorgeous–the color, the bubble hem, the touch of lace at the top, the shape, the accessories, and your model of course!

  33. Wow! Just WOW! So beautiful, Jess!

  34. love so many things about this look from the circle bubble skirt to the $2/yd deal! She’s such a cutie and this is a really unique dress, but still works to wear to a lot of different things, which I think is sometimes hard with formal kids wear! Great job!

  35. Oh dear heavens! Great job. I LOVE it. The photos are amazeballs. Okay I just have to say it again…Great Job!

  36. Ooooooh Sadie face. Love that girl! This dress just turned out so perfectly! The beautiful drape effect on the circle-bubble dress is to die for! I want to wear it. Please enlarge it with your growth-ray. Thank you.

PS – you definitely need to post wonder woman someday! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  37. I love the circle bubble skirt. So cute.

  38. This was my favorite! I love the drape of the skirt and how it moves as your daughter does. I also love the elegant simplicity of the large flower at the waist and the matching headband. Such a beautiful dress!

  39. I would love to make that dress (even the same color!) for my granddaughter!! So lovely – and LOVE the headband!! You have the most beautiful children!!

  40. This is so amazingly adorable. I can’t believe its homemade- looks straight off the rack. The white lace top reminds me of the Pretty In Pink dress that Molly Ringwald wore to the prom. I’ll go vote now!

  43. great final look jess! I can’t believe you got that fabric at walmart!

  44. You have had the best outfits, every week, BY FAR! Nice going lady!

  45. Wow, this is stunning, great job. I’m a huge fan of coral :-). Absolutely gorgeous photos and the matching headband just tops it off. Beautiful.

  46. I think this was my easiest week as far as voting went, this totally blew me away. I love this so much, and I would love to duplicate it for my daughters… wonder if I can find a similar fabric anywhere?? This just slays me. The simplicity and the beauty of it… so fantastic!

  47. so, SO great!!

these pics totally took my breath away!

  48. Yes, please do a tutorial for this! I need to get back to my sewing machine and I absolutely love this dress. Not that we have anyplace to wear it, but I would love to make this for my daughter and she would love to have it!

  49. Everything you make is so great. I’m constantly pinning the ideas, pretending that I will really make them someday. I never comment and just had to today because that first pic of your daughter could be a mini Amy Adams.
Anyway, thanks for sharing all of your sweet skills with us! ๐Ÿ™‚

  50. congrats on your win!
    The photos are gorgeous!

  51. Love the dress and the flowers! Can you give directions on how to make the headband flowers and how to “melt” the flower edges please?

  52. This is beautiful!!!! Can we look forward to the tutorial?

  53. WOW! I don’t know if you would ever have a tutorial, but I will be praying you will ! Everything about the dress, and the hand made flowers are so wonderful. I do not have a crafty bone in my body, but how do I love to sew. My granddaughter wants to be a ballerina, only 3 1/’2 now, but loves to wear dresses that she can twirl and wants to dress up in one every chance she gets. She would love a dress like this, and maybe by the time you decide to make a tutorial on this dress, she will be taking those ballerina classes that her mom has said she would love to put her in. Great job and keep up the good work that you do. You are an inspiration to me and I can tell you are definitely gifted. Can’t wait to see your future ones that you come up with. Oh, by the way your daughter is just adorable, a future heartbreaker for some little boy.
