peasant tops galore! and a funny pic contest.

Ready for a barrage of peasant tops? Shield yourself! uh…anyways.

I am SOO happy to be back! It was a blast having all those lovely knock off guests over to visit, but I sure missed you guys! (here’s where you say: we missed you too, Jess!)Β  On to the sewing! You’d better believe I’ve been busy!

These peasant shirts were some of the first clothing items I sewed for Sadie. Believe it or not I used to swear off sewing clothing (“too hard”, I believe, was my mantra) but these tops are so easy. I used the Sweet Dress pattern from Leila and Ben, although I’ve used this tutorial and this one also in the past.

Ok numero uno PT: made with Cosmo Cricket Girl Friday-from my sponsor Fabric Closet, and the tie is made withΒ  Heather Bailey Bijoux Mod Beads in Rose-from my sponsor Tuft Love!
I used this quick tutorial for the tie, and also gathered the bottom of the shirt a little bit before sewing the tie on. I love how it turned out!

Numero dos PT: This next one is simple but I added an elastic casing around the bottom for a bubble shirt effect. Cute, no? The fabric is Sanibel in Teal Mosaic, from my sponsor Ribbon Retreat!

With C’s shirts I kept it simple and let the fabric speak for itself. It really does, doesn’t it? This fabric is Riley Blake’s Sweet Dot in Multi from the Fabric Closet also-and I adore it. You’ve seen a bit of it here before. YuM!

Last but not least is this one-made with Alexander Henry in Caitlin Stripe. ( I moved the casing in a little bit to get that ruffly-ish edge on the neck and sleeves) Don’t even remember where I purchased this fabric…but it’s so cute!

I’ve been trying to use up my cute fabric-and not give in to my hoarding tendencies. Doesn’t it make you smile to see a pretty piece of fabric being used or worn? Well, it does for me. πŸ˜€

I hope you’ve enjoyed this plethora of peasant tops. If not, my condolences. πŸ˜‰

and if you’ve lasted through this whole post-why not head over to my Facebook page and check out a fun little contest for a fabric scrap bag! Give me your best line regarding Charlotte’s thoughts in this pic…note the snot trails…that could be some good comedy! I’m already laughing up a storm!

  1. Jess? Who’s Jess?
    πŸ˜‰ juuuuust kidding!!
LOVE these! I had grand plans of pumping out a slew of peasant dresses for Olivia but when my first two attempts BOTH turned out to small for my RIDICULOUSLY CHUNKY BABY I gave up for a bit. I shall have to try fit some in during Kids Clothing Week!

  2. this is a FABULOUS way to use up cute fabric! I love your variations too. I always go to my sewing room, stare at all my fabric, decide I can’t come up with anything original to make, and then leave. I think I’m going to go back to basics too. You’ve inspired me (what’s new?) πŸ™‚

ps: I have that scallopy a.h. fabric in a different colorway too! you and I are always on the same fabric page!

  3. I love these tops! My nieces would look wonderful in these. Makes me wonder if I could pop a couple of those puppies out for them.

  4. You have definitely been missed! And, as per usual, as soon as you get back, you inspire me.

I’m still terrified to sew clothing without a pattern. But as soon as I finish the long to-do list that I need to complete before summer gets here, I am definitely going to follow one of your tutorials. I hope I find it as easy as you!

  5. I love the different varieties you did with the peasant tops! LOVE the one with the tie on the bottom! These definitely need to go on to my list for the (soon to be) girls’ summer wardrobes!

  6. These are really cute! I like the Riley Blake one the best – that fabric is too cute! I haven’t tried a peasant top yet, but I want to. I am also in fabric-using-up mode. I have to move my sewing table and everything over to a little corner of my bedroom to make room for Baby #5.

  7. That first pic of Sadie kills me – she is quite the little model!! I’ll have to think of a line for Charlotte….right now I’m just looking at those cheeks πŸ™‚

  8. They are each fun…and out of such cute fabric! I have plans for a peasant style top soon. πŸ™‚ Your girls are adorable, between Sadie’s cute poses and Charlotte’s kissable cheeks.

  9. well I don’t have a FB page, but it looks like she is thinking “uh oh I better run before they catch me!!!” lol…..love the fabrics and the skirts, so cute!

  10. Oh my – the fabric you used is AWESOME!! I am in love with the alternating tie. Love it! Such a cutie πŸ™‚

  11. We missed you too! (but obviously you were a busy girl while you were semi-gone)
What great shirts! I love how you took a basic pattern but alterted it in so many way. Ingenious!

  12. Friend, I need to get my butt in gear! So many peasant tops to be sewn and I need to get on it. Thanks for the inspiration…as ever.

  13. I love them all! I’ve had a peasant dress cut out and on my sewing table for a week now. Got to get to it! Thanks for the kickstart!

  14. Love the shirts, especially the fabric! Too cute!!!

  16. I love making peasant tops and dresses!

  17. beautiful!! i need to make some!

  18. Yay! The knock off series was fun, but I really am SO excited to have you back to your regular blogging ways. Hooray!

Also, totally loving the peasant tops. I’ve been wanting to make some for Olivia for a while, but I’m just plain too lazy to make a pattern. Also, she’s totally stocked up on clothes that fit her right now, so I’ve actually been thinking more and more about buying some good patterns. I think I might just have to go buy that one! It’s so hard to find good patterns. Thanks for the tip!

  19. I just bought it! Yay!

  20. To cute!

    I looooove peasant dresses.

I make a HUGE batch for my daugher every summer, and then a second batch to go into the shop.

So easy to make, and so easy to wear! Covering up little shoulders from the sun. Elastics everywhere so that even headstrong “Miss ICanDoItMyself” can dress themselves…

  21. oh my! i love them all. the contrasting tie on the Sadie’s first shirt is so cute! i love all the fabric you used especially the ones you chose for Charlotte’s shirts.
I love to make peasant tops too. They are so easy to make and comfy to wear. Have you made any for yourself? If not, you totally should!

  22. That first picture is so yummy! Love peasant tops!

  23. Sweet shirts. Gee you have come such a long way with your sewing if you only started a couple of years ago!!! Glad to have you back! Suz

  24. These are adorable! Your girls are just darling! I love them all. I can’t believe that you didn’t like sewing clothes before. You are an amazing seamstress. I need some of that to rub off on me. I don’t like sewing clothes but I am trying to learn and do better. Plus if you make clothes it saves tons of money!

  29. love the tops jess!!! they’re so pretty and fun and springy. πŸ™‚ great job. I did miss seeing your creations!

  30. These tops are way too cute! I love the different variations, and there’s no way I could choose a favorite. Great fabrics, too!

  31. So cute! I love all the springy fabrics. I actually have the Alexander Henry Caitlin Stripe one. I need to figure out what to make with it, because it is so cute to keep folded up! I’m impressed that you watch TV while sewing. That is talent! πŸ™‚

  32. the fabric’s you used are drool worthy!!! love love love the outfits!!

  33. Christina says

So, I know this post is a couple years old. After seeing these adorable tops, I bought the “sweet dress” pattern. I’ve made 3 separate tops with it, sizing up each time because the arm pits are too tight on my very slender three year old! Have you ever had that problem with the sweet dress pattern?

Also, how exactly did you move the casing in?
