I had gotten my hands on some of this adorable Riley Blake knit, and I was picturing sewing it into a simple knit dress, and then I remembered I had printed out the Kensington pattern awhile ago, but never cut anything out for some reason…so it was the perfect pattern for this! I cut out and sewed up a size 5 and just eeked that out of a yard of the fabric. It was a close one! lol

I love the way Adrianna had me do the neckline-it’s fantastic, easy, and looks great! I made the sleeves elbow length which I think will carry her into fall/winter just fine ๐Ÿ™‚

My favorite way to attach a gathered skirt to a bodice, for knits, at least…is to use elastic thread in the bobbin, and sew with a zig zag stitch…after you sew it together, steam it up with the iron and it tightens up the seam and the skirt lays so nicely!

The fabric has a fantastic hand and sews up so nicely! I can’t wait to get my hands on more riley blake knit!

  1. The kid, the dress, and the fabric are all darling! I need some of that knit!

  2. very cute dress! I love that fabric!

  3. Good tip about how to attach a gathered skirt – I have been trying to think about how to address the stretched out issue so I’ll have to try that! I’ve made a few dresses with a knit top and woven skirt so I wonder if it would work for that situation as well, I’ll have to test it out. Thanks!

  4. ok, what do you mean you sewed it up with elastic thread? did you sew over that with regular thread? i’m thinking that doesn’t hold well enought? not that I don’t trust you, just tring to fully understand what you did? Super cute dress. I want one in my size!

    • I sewed it with regular thread on top, elastic thread in the bobbin. I’ve done it several times and the seams hold up just fine! You could of course resew it if they popped, like any other seam. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • I just finally read the comments here and I think I misunderstood. So you gather the skirt regularly but then sew it to the bodice with the elastic thread? I was thinking you gathered the skirt using that method and then sewed it to the bodice regularly. I tried that but it didn’t gather it enough to fit the bodice, although it was a higher ratio of gathers than the kensington. I’m definitely going to try it that way though because it makes sense!

  5. Gorgeous!
