barbie cap sleeve shirt tutorial

Continuing with Barbieยฎ week here: a cap sleeve top.

So…..let’s get down to business. (to defeat the Huns..)

Click below for more!

You’ll need:

one 6 1/2″ x 3″ piece of fabric
two pieces of fabric 3″x1 1/2″, one side cut on a slight curve
sew on velcro
sewing stuff

First, serge or zig zag stitch around all edges.
Then with your iron, press all edges in 1/4 inch. On the sleeve pieces, only the long sides need to be pressed in.
Sew around the large piece with about 1/8″ seam.

(are you still singing that song from Mulan in your head? I am.)

also sew along the long sides of the sleeve pieces.
hey doll! how’s it goin’. now here’s where you can make the top more fitted, or leave it loose-your preference!
wrap the large piece, inside out around her torso, and pin the back together so it’s snug. Then, form little darts and pin them like so.
back stitching at start and finish, sew along the pins.
make sure it fits…..this isn’t the best dart job. sorry.
take your sleeves and pin them into place on the front and back.
sew them on, using your stitching as a guide, back stitch at start and finish.
cut a piece of sew on velcro to fit, and sew it on!
the more fitted look
looser ( i like this version better for larger fabric patterns)
Let me know if you have any questions, of course!

Thanks!

  3. Adorable! (and totally guilt-free, right?) ๐Ÿ™‚

Also, I now have that song stuck in my head too.

  4. I wish it was that easy to make shirts for me. ha ha. Thanks for getting that song stuck in my head. It’s been years since I’ve thought about Mulan.

  5. I’ve been loving your posts about Barbie clothes. Last night I bought my 2-y-o daughter a Barbie and I bought myself the Simplicity pattern, little snaps, and little buttons. She’s totally excited and wants me to make clothes for her Barbie. She kept bugging me last night but I was busy sewing a dress for her aunt. As I sewed my daugher would take scraps and elastic and wrap it around her Barbie. So cute!

Thanks again! I’m so excited to follow these tutorials and make some clothes so Barbie doesn’t have to hang out in her bikini all the time!

  6. I love this! My great aunt made me a bunch of Barbie clothes when I was little and I thought it was the most awesome thing!

  7. Thanks for the tut. I’m looking forward to making some Barbie clothes for me, no, I mean my daughter!

  8. Wow, you’ve got to be one of the best moms ever. My mom used to make my barbie doll’s clothes. I’ve been too lazy to even think about barbie’s wardrobe (not to mention they are so small I’m afraid I’ll sew my finger in there) You’re totally awesome, makes me think maybe I should put some together… someday. I don’t even have the excuse of saying that the barbie will be naked anyway, because Princess won’t let her barbies be naked.

  9. You make it all seem so easy Jess. I will be giving these a try.
I hate how you can’t buy extra clothes for barbie anymore, like when I was young… all those years ago!

  10. Found you through one pretty thing. Love the look of this top. I just might try up-sizing the idea to fit me! Really cute!

  11. My girls have been dying for me to make them barbie doll clothes! This is perfect and SIMPLE!!!! Thank you so much for sharing.
On a side note…when my son was little he used to tell us “you took away my victory!!!”

  12. muii bueno te felicitoo me encanto

  13. Haha! My daughter is in Mulan right now (an ancestor)….so I’m hearing these references on a daily basis! ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. My daughters got barbie clothes from grandmothers, aunts, and cousins. Not counting the ones I made! Still have all those waiting for a granddaughter. I have 5 grandsons :'( so may be a while!

  15. I have five daughters so have seen a lot of barbie in my day. My 10 year old is wanting to make her own Barbie clothes and I am going to use your site to teach her how ๐Ÿ™‚

thanks for something so easy a caveman could do it ๐Ÿ™‚
And for the Mulan song that is now stuck in my head!!

  16. Your barbie clothes are adorable!! I just made the skirt and shirt for barbie and a matching skirt for my daughter. Thanks for the tutorials.

Thank you very much for the great tutorial. The first thing I ever made sewing was a barbie dress with your tutorial. Greetings from the Netherlands from Ilse

  18. Hi! I LOVE this site and thank you so much for it ๐Ÿ™‚ I admit I am afraid to sew ๐Ÿ™ I don’t own a sewing machine. My mom and I bought patterns once when I was 16 and that’s how they stayed– patterns. I have a 5 yr old daughter and I want to make Barbie clothes like my grandmother did. Can I just buy a basic sewing machine? Or do you use something super fancy.
    Thanks!

    • I sewed on a pretty basic Brother machine for 4+ years, but now I do have a “fancy” Bernina which I love with my whole heart. lol. But really anything works!

  19. Desde Argentina, te doy las gracias por tu aporte!!! y por hacer feliz a mis hijas….

  20. Ohh! These look wonderful! I wish that there was a printable pattern to follow! (unless I’m missing the link for it?)

  21. WARNING: ‘One Pretty Thing” referenced above, links to a PORN site!

  22. I am just coming across your blog now, my four year old is getting super into her barbies and has informed me that they do not have nearly enough clothing and each barbie requires her own wardrobe. Thank you so much for this tutorial as well as the reminder that I need to go and watch Mulan with her as she has never seen it. I will now be singing that sound track at the top of my lungs while sewing ๐Ÿ˜€
