Mockingjay tee

My sister and I have been planning to make these Mockingjay tees for when the first movie comes out NEXT MONTH! Can you tell I'm excited. *hyperventilates into a paper bag*

If you haven't read the Hunger Games series, you probably live under a rock. And if you do, kudos to you for figuring out the internet under that rock. ;) just kiddin'.

But seriously. The books are amazingly good and I read them constantly...I'm a bit of a HG nerd over here! (really, don't get me started)

*fake laughing*

I used a Mockingjay image (searched Google), printed it, cut it out to make a stencil, then traced it on the back of some shimmery gold fabric I got at Joann's. Then I carefully cut it out (with my awesome scissors!), and used some of that sticky sewing tape (Stitch Witchery) to keep it in place while I sewed around the edges with black thread.

I'm really happy with how it turned out! Now I just need to thrift an orange backpack and a sweet hunting jacket and I'm set.

;)

And if you got that joke you are awesome.

I'd definitely pay for that tee - looks super professional and soooooo perfect in style and placement and all. WTG!!
(And I, too, can't wait until the movie premieres!! Probably later here, in Sweden, but still!! :D)

My daughter is sooo impressed.... we've been looking for a HG tee to buy as she's having a Hunger Games movie night with friends for her 13th birthday next month! Don't know that I'm up to making my own though...well done! :)

Love the geekiness I too am a crazy fan. I'll be having a Hunger games blog freak out all March I hope you'll be able to join.

YAYYYY! The hunger Games sucked me and my husband into a black hole until we were finished with them. When I read the first one, it hadn't been out for very long and nobody really knew about it. It's pretty lame when you're really into something and have nobody to squeal with. Lol

Cool shirt. I'm on the third book. It's a great series.

My husband just finished the last book and keeps getting on my case that I NEED to start the first one! I'm the reader of the family so he can't understand what's taking me so long. But he was SOOO sucked in that I just know when I do start them, all my last minute baby projects will fall by the wayside. So I'm still holding out til the week before the movie!

Oh my goodness Jess - this post just verified all of the reasons why I love you! You are rocking that Mockingjay shirt! Love it! My husband and I are both counting down to the movie!!!

ok, a) awesome shirt, very well done!

and b) I'm totally going to bring all these excited comments to a screeching halt, but please, DO get started on why you love these books! I'm not trying to be snarky, I just really want to know! I loved the twilight series and get personally angry at people who diss it, so I won't say anything negative about HG. I am completely willing to agree that it is my fault I couldn't get into them. But I *want* to like them like everybody else does, so help me. What is it that makes you love them so much? (I read all 3 and will read them again if that helps)

Such a cute shirt! My husband and I read them together and the movie comes out on our 5th wedding anniversary so we're going to dinner and then the movie...sad huh?!? We're big nerds!!

I made one that looks almost exactly like yours :) Check it out here http://jensennp.blogspot.com/2012/01/first-crafts-of-2012.html I love the idea of getting an orange backpack to go with it!

Love it!! I need one of these in my life, now. My sister made one sort of like this and on the back she printed "Real or Not Real." I know....not in the first book but still, "real" is like my favorite line in the whole book. We are huge Peeta fans over where!

hey now, I haven't read them and I don't live under a rock! :( I want to see the movie, and then I'll probably start up on the books. I'll be adding them to my reading list...

My daughter would be soooo impressed. She is a HUGE Hunger Games fan. (I like it too but she's got me beat!) She's trying to convince me to go to the midnight showing. I want to see the movie but I don't think I can stay awake that late. LOL

Nice. I am looking forward to the movie too. Might have to make a couple of these shirts. Great idea! thanks.

This is awesome! My sister in law and I are going to make shirts as well so you are not alone in your geek-ness lol We cannot wait for the movie to come out! And now I am happy to know we won't be the only ones in Hunger Games shirts!

Whoo hoo!! Love the Hunger Games, so excited for the movie. Your shirt is fantastic!! You will appreciate the Katniss outfit I made for American Girl dolls... pics on my blog. I've only made one and it sold 2 hours after listing it, so as soon as I can I will be making more. I even made the orange backpack. :) My husband thought I should have a knife sticking out of the back of the backpack but I decided that wasn't appropriate. lol.

(As you can see, I am a fellow HG nerd)

Confession: I haven't read any of the Hunger Games books yet. But I'm pretty amazed I can function on the internet too. Haha.

I literally just finished the first book minutes before I opened this post! I love the shirt. Are your earrings Mockingjays? Where did you get them!?!

Amy said...

That is awesome!!! I just got done reading the first one last week and just borrowed the second book from a friend...I see lots of ignored housework in my future! :)

Karen said...

Awesome T! I hate to admit it, but I didn't know what a mocking jay was until I read your post. Guess I better start reading the books so I can go see the movie when it comes out!
Cute earrings, too!

I'd rather not mention all the things in my life that were neglected while I was reading the Hunger Games series. Loved it!

Rachel said...

Jess, you did a fantastic job! Love it ;). I'm just about through the first book and I'm hooked. It takes me forever to finish a book because by the time I can get to bed (typically 11pm+) I can't read for long. It's worth some sleep deprivation though.

Tara said...

Your shirt looks so great! Wonderful job! I have not read the books, but am wondering if I should. Are they creepy/scary at all? Just not sure if I'd be interested. It seems like I should be though!

Kylie said...

Having been told I live under a rock (by you!) I went out and got the first book. Well, now I'm onto the third and more than a little sleep deprived having stayed up waaaay to late reading them all!
Thanks for the tip , I love them and I'm really glad I'm reading them before the movies come out!
Now just have to make myself one of those mockingjay tees.......

Meg said...

Your shirts turned out so cool! I'm making ones just like it for me and my buddy!

Jess, your shirt is awesome. I'm super stoked about the movie coming out and will be making tees with a friend as well. We're going to do FPS, though because I suck at embroidering! I really do want to know where you got those earrings! On the back of our shirts (no haters please), we're going to put "Girl on fire" with flames. I'll send some pics when they're finished. I'm stressing about how to make all the little details stand out, though, like the eye and the wings, you know? Any thoughts?

Crafts For My Critter said...

I just discovered the earrings at Hot Topic. $18 for three pair, so if you and two friends divy them up, that's only $6 each. Not too bad!
