Isn't it awkward when it's your birthday and you're talking to someone who doesn't know you very well and you want to tell them it's your birthday but you don't want to sound all self centered but gosh darn it you want them to tell you Happy Birthday? No? Is it just me...
I'll just clear the air then...yep I'm (almost) one year older!
Also, I didn't make my own birthday cake (yet), this one was for my little sister Julia's birthday a few weeks ago. Definitely homemade...lol. I think I'm better at cupcakes.

happy birthday! it's totally not wrong to drop your birthday into conversation. I think it's a good thing for grownups to still get excited about it. especially if it gets you free dessert.

P.S. That cake looks fantastic - and while your cupcakes are truly ridiculously gorgeous, I don't think anything about your sister's cake is wrong! You should have seen the cake I made for my fiancee and his mom (they share a birthday) - it tasted great, but wow - it did NOT look good! I didn't know the trick about the parchment paper - I just greased and floured/cocoaed the respective pans, and I took them to my to-be brother-in-laws house for assembly. It was a topsy-turvy cake without meaning for it to be, and I hadn't made enough of the coconut buttercream to cover all four layers (alternating coconut and chocolate). I'd thought about making my own wedding cake, and I realized that if I were to attempt it, a lot more practice would be necessary! :)
