belly+baby gauze baby blanket tutorial

You’ve probably seen those cute gauze swaddling blankets, right? They’re all the rage nowadays. We didn’t have that kind of tomfoolery when I had my last baby, so of course I had to get in on the hottest new baby item! I thought I’d try making some of my own, because that’s what we bloggers do, am I right? I got my fabric on fabric.com and ordered 1.5 yards for each blanket…it came out to be about $6 per blanket.

It’s basically hemming four sides of a piece of fabric, not much to it, but I’ll show you a trick to get nice corners!

First fold your fabric in half and then half again, making sure everything is nice and smooth. Them trim the sides down with a rotary cutter and ruler to form a square, or rectangle, your choice. (I almost typed triangle…yeah that wouldn’t work so well!)

Then on each side, iron the edge over about 1/2″.

Then again, another 1/2″.

On each corner, unfold both sides to just the first edge ironed over.

Then fold the corner in towards the center of the blanket.

Finally, fold each side over using the crease from the second edge ironed over, and tada!

Nice smooth corners. Pin, and sew around the whole blanket along the edge you folded over.

All done! Decorate how you like with fabric ink or paint. An applique would look cute too!

I used Decoart’s new Ink Effects ink, and I’m not sure I totally love it. It takes awhile to fuse to the fabric with the iron, but it is very flexible, not stiff like fabric paint can be. I don’t know if  you are supposed to wash it right away either, because I folded it up and some of the ink parts transferred to other parts of the blanket. grr. I’m going to wash it and see what happens.

  1. I love these, totally going to get some gauze! Great corner tutorial, too. I’m usually really lazy when it comes to corners, but that looks so easy!

  2. I love these! When you are saying gauze, same thing as muslin? Sort of? Would I literally just type in gauze when searching fabric.com.

GREAT tip on corners!! Will be trying this out. Our Aiden & Anis blankets we buy up here (Canada) are generally around sixty dollars for a four pack and are only sold in speciality boutique shops. When people are across the border in the US—a favourite to bring back is a cheap package from Target! 🙂

  3. Thank you so much for this post. I want to let you know that I posted a link to your blog in Creative Busy Bee Craft Inspirations, under the Page 3 post on Sep. 10, 2012. Thanks again.

  4. that corners tip is fabulous! I fell in love with the gauze blankets when I was introduced to them for Madeline, and found I used them for everything, burp cloths and all! Just a fantastic do-it-all material! So soft and breezy, fabulous! And your bunting addition is so cute!

  9. Love these blankets! And yeah they weren’t around for my last two kids, but since we are into the swaddle, I am so going to make a dozen of these, I bet they are way easier to use than the flannel blankets!

  10. This is so cute and sweet. I love it! I have recently found out of three new babys on the way… And the little corner tip is a good one!

  11. This looks wonderful! Exactly what fabric did you use? What dimensions did you make the blanket?

  14. Wow, I never even considered that I would be able to find this at a fabric store. $6??! That’s wayyy cheaper than the popular ones I’ve seen. You’ll have to update on how the applique turned out. Very cute! I’ll have to remember/pin this!

  15. I don’t know that kind of fabric, is it like the Aden&Anais blanket?
