Something Kinda Different nativity advent giveaway!

***This giveaway is now closed***

Growing up, we had this pretty cool nativity advent calendar that my mom made out of felt, and we all loved taking turns each night adding one piece to the manger scene. Of course, with 8 kids we only got 3 turns, but still. It is one of my favorite memories!

My mom and dad recently started a new website called somethingkindadifferent.com with some of their handmade goods-and they have an Etsy shop too!

Β

Β They now sell kits to make this faux stained glass felt nativity advent-and also sell assembled advents-but they really don’t take much time to put together!

I love that each piece has it’s own little spot on the window! They stick to the backing piece which makes it easy and fun to re-arrange the scene. (I may recall stacking the animals on top of each other…)

The kit includes a brief verse of scripture and a carol verse to be sung each night, assembly instructions, a wood dowel, ribbon for hanging, a black backing panel with sewn casing for the dowel to fit in, blue window shapes, blue and green center panels and all the pre cut parts and pieces to make each figure:

Cave style stable
Mary and Joseph
Three shepherds
Three sheep
Three kings
Donkey and Cow
Manger with or without hay
Angel
Angel choir
Bright Star
6 smaller stars
The baby Jesus

This Nativity Calendar is handcrafted in your choice of recycled acrylic felt or wool felt for quality and durability.

They also sell the pattern!

So how would you like a chance to win a kit to make your very own nativity advent?

They also have a coupon code for free shipping during the duration of this giveaway! Just enter the code:Β  CRAFTINESS when you check out!

Two ways to enter!

On Christmas eve we always go to my parents for dinner when we get home the girls open up a gift from us which is alway pajamas they put them on and then we go outside and sprinkle oatmeal for the reindeers on the grass. Finally we come inside and set out the cookies and milk. Once we are ready for bed we go upstairs and say our prayers. This year that the girls are older 3&6 we are going to read the story of the birth of Jesus. I can’t wait for Christmas eve πŸ™‚

  4. My families christmas eve tradition is Pjs. My mom used to buy everyone pjs but a few years ago we all decided that we would pull names and everyone would give to someone else. I always make the ones I give a way which is really fun. Last year we had my sister and her daughter and I made them matching ballerina pjs.

  7. I love this Nativity kit – such a wonderful way to put Christ as the focus of your celebration. My favorite Christmas tradition is getting a new ornament each year with all of our names on it and the year. The kids love looking at the ornaments and saying things like, “Oh look, this was before I was born!,” etc. And the first ornament to go on the tree is always my husband and I’s “first Christmas together” ornament.

  8. This nativity is beautiful! out family tradition is reading the night before christmas in english and german on christmas eve (we’ve not german and no one speaks german but we found the book one year and had such a laugh trying to read it that it just stuck!)

  9. I LOVE this!

My favorite tradition growing up that my mom started was to give us something small (an ornament, christmas socks, or a christmas book, etc) to tide us over and get us in the Christmas spirit. We loved it!

  10. I love the advent calendar! Definitely need one! My favorite Christmas tradition was driving around town with my family to look at Christmas lights. Now I have a daughter and I can’t wait to take her this year!

  18. Oh wow, that’s amazing! What a great idea! I have been married for almost 9 years and still don’t have a tradition. Too much change, not enough intentional-ness in the Christmas department. Other than the extended family gatherings (and the debate we have every year of whether we want to put the tree up with the toddlers…)! Fabulous giveaway! Thanks very much. My family would love this!

  19. I now LIKE them on FB. I think it’s wonderful to have something visual that the family can do together every day to remind them of Christ. I really really really like this.

  38. I love laying down on the floor to look up at the tree all lit up after we have decorated it.

  39. When the kids were little, the last thing they did before going to bed was to put the baby Jesus in the manger. They each had their own nativity set. They began receiving parts of their set when they publicly declared that they no longer believed in Santa Claus.

  40. This is absolutely adorable! I’d love to win!

we do so many traditions during advent with our children, there are many favorites, it’s too difficult to pick just one

  54. fun to read everyone’s traditions; my favorite memory/tradition was gong to the Oakland temple every year to see the lights and watching mr. kreuger’s christmas while drinking hot cocoa from the thermos.

  57. Growing up we had a count down to Christmas mailbox. Every day all of the new Christmas cards that came that day were put in the box so everyone had a chance to read and see who sent cards. Every morning we took turns changing the number of days to Christmas!

  58. I really love this advent! We have a tradition of building a fort on Christmas Eve, with the whole family sleeping in one room. It’s gotten trickier as babies have been born and we’ve all grown, but we are die hard, so the tradition still stands!

    Thanks!
    lily79{at}gmail{dot}com

  59. I like them on FB! I would lovve to win this Nativity Advent Calendar. We are big on making Christmas about Jesus and not putting emphasis on receiving gifts, but giving to others. This would be a great addition to teaching our children more visually about what Christmas is really about! Thanks for a chance to win!

  60. I always loved going to midnight Mass, but since my kiddos were born we haven’t been able to do that. But I love seeing the wonder on their faces on Christmas morning!

    [email protected]

  61. My favorite tradition is setting up the tree. It’s a family affair, not one only for adults. Our tree isn’t perfect to some, but I love it.

    girlmommy(dot)sheila(at)gmail(dot)com

  62. Christmas is all about tradition at my parents house, but my favorite is we go to a nice dinner then we sit around the Christmas tree and we each read a holiday book/story we found that year. Its fun and a great way to spend time together.

    [email protected]

  63. Christmas Eve… a beautiful service at church & a delicious, traditional, bean soup dinner to follow. Then we open a few gifts. Christmas morning … I love sausage bread, Christmas music & just the spirit of joy that seems to be in the air!
    ynnejnna(at)gmail(dot)com

  64. We all sit as a family and read the Christmas story out of the bible. Each family member reads one verse, then the next and so on. We display nativities in our home. Each year it is our goal to find and purchase an additional nativity small in size and unique. We like to go in the car and look at christmas lights in our neighborhood, then enjoy hot cocoa!

  66. theblueberryfrog says

Each year, we drive 500 snow covered miles to spend Christmas with my family. On the way, we stop and buy ALOT of fireworks. On Christmas eve, we shoot them off after dinner so Santa knows where to find my daughter and her cousins.
    [email protected]

  67. I love the advent calendar, too! I may or may not already have 3 for our little family, but I can’t help it. I just love them.

We haven’t been very good at establishing new traditions within our own family (we’ve been too busy trying to fit in visiting everyone to do anything on our own, it seemed), but something I’m hoping to start implementing this year is to give each child their own Christmas tree ornament every year. This way, when they grow up and move away, they each have a set of ornaments of their own, that hopefully mean something to them.

  68. One of my favorite traditions is picking up small souvineers on our vacations to go into stockings. The kids are so excited to get a magnet from our trip to the coast, a charm from disneyland, or pine cone earrings from the redwood forest. It is a reminder of our summer time fun and the kids know that Santa was watching even last summer while we were on vacation!

  69. I LOVE THIS!! I liked something kinda different on facebook and just spent a little while browsing their etsy shop. This advent is SO ADORABLE!! I’m a huge advent calender fan. So much so that I featured this on my blog today as well. {little-inspirations.blogspot.com} Just so I can remember the idea and where it came from. Thanks so much for the inspiration!! Anyway, my favorite tradition growing up was obviously participating in any kind of advent during the month of December. I especially loved one where my Dad would read us a story every night. Here’s hoping! [email protected]

  70. Would LOVE to win this…it’s perfect, had been trying to think how to do a nativity advent calendar and was overwhelmed by the idea of creating one totally from scratch! Our favorite tradition is lighting an advent wreath candle at dinner each night and having a little reading along with that.

  71. THIS. IS. AWESOME. WONDERFUL, really. How neat, I would love to win one, but I don’t think I am patient enough, I’m going to buy one!!!

  72. I liked them on FB, so neat, thanks so much!

  73. Love this! and love Christmas traditions! Advent is a big part of our celebrations.

  74. Liked them on Facebook as well!

  75. I LOVE THIS! And, I’d love to win!! πŸ™‚
My favorite Christmas tradition is playing Christmas Elves to an unsuspecting family – details here: http://sprik.blogspot.com/2011/11/12-days-of-christmas-christmas-elves.html

  76. I liked them on FB!

  77. I love the advent calendar. I feel like advent calendars have been losing their meaning… seems like they’re turning into a “countdown to presents calendar” and that’s not what it’s supposed to be about! But this one is perfect.

Traditions… We’re Cuban so we celebrate on Christmas Eve with a big family party, roasted pork, black beans & rice, yucca, and just lots of family fun!

  78. That is such a beautiful advent calendar. I would love to have it! We have a 2-year-old, so we are just starting to form family traditions, and this is one that I would love to have. Growing up, my family would always open one present on Christmas Eve, then sing some carols and read the Christmas story in Luke 2 around the Christmas tree, with just the tree lights turned on. Then we would go downstairs and watch Dickens’ Christmas Carol (the version with George C. Scott is the best. Sorry Muppets fans!). I loved it.

  80. We’ve had our family tradition for as long as I can remember. On Christmas eve we go to evening mass and then come home to a piping hot bowl of Pho that my mom has been cooking all day.

The nativity advent is so beautiful! What a wonderful way remind kids what Christmas is.

  81. We had a similar advent calendar out of felt growing up. Love it! Favorite tradition was the candlelight service on Christmas Eve…staying up late, and the mystical service.

  82. Every year, my six siblings and I would stretch our stockings (bright red knee socks) as far across the living room as we could. Rumor was that the longest stocking would be stuffed with the most loot on Christmas morning…

I absolutely love your folks’ shop. The maypole carousel is brilliant!

Thanks for the opportunity to win this luscious kit!

  87. I always loved our advent calendar – it was a felt Christmas tree, with various button ornaments that I pinned on. It was mine – no one else got to put the ornaments on – and I loved the responsibility!

  88. My family eats soup on Christmas eve while we listen to the police scanner reporting an “unidentified flying object” all evening.

  90. My family use to make Hundreds of Jello Popcorn Balls and then deliver them to everyone in our ward (congregation). We spent lots of FHEs making and delivering those popcorn balls.

    [email protected]

  91. Our favorite tradition was started by my dad. We gather all the candles together, light a fire and the candles, and gather round while Daddy reads the Christmas story from Luke 4. The kids like to blow out the candles afterwards!

    [email protected]

  92. ooh, I remember toys something like their merry-go-round toy from when I was growing up. There was a couple who were older friends of my grandparents & the husband had been born in Norway – so they had many quaint Norwegian antique toys. Since I was an only and exceedingly careful with toys, they would let me handle even the most delicate ones!

  93. We always take a drive with the kids to look at Christmas lights. One family close to where we live has thousands of lights in their gigantic yard. People drive from all over to see their display…complete with a life-size Santa flying across the sky! I would love to start a new tradition using this lovely nativity scene. Thanks for the chance to win!

  94. What a beautiful Advent Calendar. Our tradition is going to see A Christmas Carol in a local theatre and this year we are doing it with the second generation-our grandkids.
Thanks for a chance to win.

  100. My favorite Christmas tradition I love our tradition of homemade mexican food on Christmas Eve after which all the kids get to open a new pair of PJ’s. Love it!

  101. First of all, this is beautiful! I’ve been looking for a fun way to introduce the Nativity to my young girls. I love this.

One of my very favorite Christmas traditions is sitting down with my family for a Christmas Eve dinner. We would decorate the table and dining room, eat a traditional dinner of Malibu Chicken and give each other Secret Santa gifts. Then we would sit together and talk and enjoy each other’s company for at least an hour after dinner was done.

  102. We just started our family and our excited to make some traditions to keep πŸ™‚

  103. I liked something kinda different on facebook πŸ™‚

  104. Christmas eve we do a quiet candle lit Bethlehem Dinner- which is a meal that would be similar to what Mary and Joseph would have eaten before the Savior was born.

  105. i liked them on FB

  106. My two favorite Christmas things – advent calendars and nativity scenes – all rolled into one!
I buy my daughter a special ornament every year that represents something she has done for the first time or accomplished that year.

  107. I love this nativity! One of my favorite Christmas family traditions is walking down Cripps Place, which turns into “Cripps Christmas”. Most of the houses on three long blocks all have huge light and painted figurine displays on their yards, and at the end of one of the culdedscs, there’s Santa handing out candy canes and a giant Christmas tree. They’ve done it for years and years, and this year, my parent’s ward is coordinating the event, so it’s extra special to our family!

  108. I went straight to their website to purchase one but it was just to expensive for me right now. I think it’s just beautiful and I know how much joy my children would get from this.
I think the best thing about Christmas are the traditions. For me in wouldn’t be Christmas without the music, the mince pies and the candles lighting up the room and more importantly have time with my family. There’s nothing better than getting away from the everyday rush, and Christmas is perfect.
    Best of luck to everyone.

  109. I love this calendar! Perfect to teach the kids the reason for Christmas. We have a family tradition of reading the nativity story in Luke before opening presents on Christmas morning.

  110. What a lovely Advent calender. We are a young family and so still making new traditions. One that I hope will stick is enjoying a hot cup of cocoa and a game of scrabble after dinner on CHRISTmas eve.

  111. What a beautiful Advent calendar! And I love the idea of adding a piece each day–I would love sharing this with my four little ones!

  112. This would be great for our family to add to our Christmas traditions….we love going to the candle light Christmas Eve service every year!

  113. My favorite Christmas tradition is ice skating on Christmas Eve. The Christmas Eve service at my church was always early, 5 or 6, then we would go home, get bundled up, and go skating at the local rink. The rink didn’t have lights for a long time, so dad would pull the car up to the edge of the ice and shine the headlights on the rink for us. And then when our toes were sufficiently frozen, we’d head home for hot chocolate and make stromboli for supper. Yum! I hope when our children are older we live in a town that was a skating rink!
    phloebs(at)gmail(dot)com

  114. My favorite Christmas tradition these days is making a Jesse tree with our kids. Each night, starting at Thanksgiving or the day after, we read a section of scripture, starting with Genesis 1:1 on the first day. Then everyone – adults and kids alike – draw and color an ornament illustrating that day’s scripture reading. (We just cut cardstock into a circle or other shape – each year a new shape.) Sometimes we string these into garland, and sometimes we hang them on a tree. We keep them from year to year as a keepsake. The kids always look forward to it.

  115. I liked them on Facebook

  116. This is really neat, I love that your parents are doing this. I’ve been wanting an advent calendar for a while and always forget till too late so our tradition has been to have the children draw on construction paper and cut out the different pieces and we daily glue them onto a large sheet of paper. Simple but adorable to see their growing drawing talent each year πŸ™‚
    Hope I win! [email protected]

    Love the nativity advent!

  123. I love this idea! One of the traditions we do is letting the kids decorate a tree any way they like and helping to put up some decorations. I want them to feel like thehy get a say in it!

  124. I liked the facebook page too.

  125. Actually the advent calendar IS my favourite tradition! Love this idea!

  126. Oh goodness, I LOVE this! I’m starting a new tradition this year – wrapping our children’s Christmas books up and putting them under the tree. Then we’ll open one every night in December. πŸ™‚

  131. One of my favorite traditions is Chinese food for Christmas Eve dinner. Who wants to cook 2 big meals in a row, and when we were kids, the Chinese restaurants were the only ones open and it stuck!

  132. That’s a wonderful advent calendar! Our favorite Christmas tradition is to go see the Nutcracker and then get milkshakes!

  133. My family has a tradition of making presents for each other. Each person gets someone else’s name for Christmas and they have to hand make a present instead of buying one.

  139. Well my family is just starting out.. baby’s first Christmas! and hubby is deployed πŸ™ So we don’t have many traditions needless to say. We had opened only one present on Christmas eve tho. So for now that is our tradition.

I think the nativity scene is great esp to teach children the true meaning of CHRISTmas πŸ™‚

  140. I wrapped 33 books so that we can open one each day of advent. This is new to us last year. The children also LOVE our advent wreath. Our two year old is pointing to the candles and wanting to smell them already πŸ™‚

  148. My favorite Christmas tradition growing up was our tree trimming party. My mom would make all kinds of goodies, then we’d go cut our tree (with each of the kids getting a turn to help cut). In the end it would always be my dad and I that actually decorated the tree (while my brothers scarfed all the food). The first Christmas after I got married, my dad called me to complain that no one was helping him with the tree. πŸ™‚ It’s been fun to continue the tradition and start new ones with my husband, and now with our 2 kiddos.
I was actually looking for a Nativity Advent Calendar, so this would be great!
p.s…Happy Belated Birthday! I’ve recently discovered pinterest, so I’ve been a little obsessed with it for the past week!

  151. Our dinner Christmas eve is simple with foods that Mary and Joseph might have eaten like grapes, crackers and cheese.

  152. My favorite tradition has always been opening one present on Christmas Eve. Each year I always hope it’s not going to be pajamas … but it always is (and I am always secretly happy about it!).

Our favorite tradition is buying or making a special ornament each year for each child and reminiscing as we hang them each year.

  155. What a beautiful advent calendar! My favorite Christmas traditions are the simple things we do every year. Decorating the tree while listening to Christmas music, baking cookies with my girls, Christmas Eve service at church… I could go on and on!

  158. Growing up, I think my favorite tradition was our stockings. Santa would leave them at the foot of our bed every year, and they were filled with little toys, trinkets, candy, nuts, and fruit! My little one gets pretty excited about her “Christmas Banana” each year. That’s probably my favorite, too!

And, since our little one came along, we’ve had an elf that visits us each Christmas season. Our little one looks forward to Sassy visiting us each year and wondering about all the mischief she’ll get into!
