fort firefly roller skate dress

ย
I am on a bit of a Roller Skate dress/top kick binge lately. I’ve got yet another one cut out for Ava on my sewing table RIGHT NOW. I just can’t help myself…it’s easy, fairly quick, adorable, and great for using up ye ol’ fabric stash since it’s easy to make reversible. I’m doing my best to deplete the stash but it keeps growing back! har har…I wish fabric grew on trees….with ric rac for leaves…..and spools of thread for fruit…..

what was I talking about? Yes, sewing. What else?

I used fabric from the amazing new Fort Firefly line from Birch Fabrics. They were nice enough to send me some and I knew right away I wanted to use them together for this pattern…it just took me a few weeks! *cough*slacker*cough* I used Fireflies in Mineral, and Rose Garden in Taupe. This whole line is just adorable, definitely check it out if you haven’t already!

I sewed up a size 4, without the neck piece, no frills. I love love love this cute coral button I found in my stash. It matches the fabric perfectly!

Added a twill tape tie to the floral side. In order to make this pattern reversible, I didn’t trim the lining hem back as the pattern instructs-just left it as is, and then pressed both the lining and outer fabric hems in 1/2″ and then lined them up, pinned, and sewed 1/4″ from the bottom. ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope this helps those of you who asked about that last time!

aaaaand the reverse! Sadie loved this side more, as usual we disagreed on which side we liked best…haha!

Which side is your favorite?

  1. Wow. You have such amazing taste and sewing skillz!

  2. Last time I agreed with Sadie – but this time I agree with you! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. it is gorgeous! I looove the floral side, but asked my daughter also and she agrees with your daughter. Maybe that side is more kid friendly?

  4. yep, the butterflies ๐Ÿ™‚
    gorgeous!

  5. Ths dress is sweet! I can see it with leggings, boots, & a cardigan for fall.
Your posts crack me up. I’d love fabric trees. That would be better tan a hen with golden eggs!

  6. oh those fabrics…i love them!!! so smart to make it reversible, too. you’ve nearly pushed me over the edge to toss all other projects aside and sew another roller skate. maybe ava’s will be the final straw…

  7. Definetely the first fabric!
Got to try this type of dress for my girls too…..adorable!

  8. I love the ribbon side!!

  9. How do you make every fabric look amazing?!? Love both sides, but Sadie may have won this round. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. I think I have to go with Sadie! But hey, you’ve done a great job!

  11. That is just beautiful! This leaves me wanting to go sew one right now. Thank you for sharing! I could not decide which side was my favorite since the kid in me agreed with your daughter, but the vintage feel of the first side really calls to me. Love it!

  12. Oooh- I can’t pick a fav! Both are super cute! I really like the twill bow, though. And you always have the CUTEST buttons! ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. I saw this fabric the other day. It is so unique and so ethereal (yes, I even checked to be sure I was using it right!). I would probably make a zillion of these if I had a girl that was still little. I love the tie, the simple lines, and the reverse!

  14. The fabric! The dress! The girl! It’s all perfect.

  15. Oh my gosh, I love them both. That fabric is awesome!

  16. Both cute, but I’m with you–love the floral side and she looks so adorable in it ๐Ÿ™‚ Well done, mama!

  17. I love both sides, I can’t pick a favorite. =) Those are beautiful fabrics, love the dress.

  18. Lovely both ways (but I do like the first a tiny bit more)

  19. My favorite is the floral. I ordered the Penny’s Garden from this line. Love it!! I’ve made several dresses from this pattern too. The last one I adapted the sleeves to flutter sleeves, and it turned out so cute! When you make it reversible, it the bow bias tape just on the inside of the dress when wearing the other side? Thanks!

  20. Ditto to the above question – what happens when the dress is worn reversed and the bow is on the inside? Does it not bother Sadie? My girls would go nuts to have the tie against their skin, and would never wear it that way so making a reversible dress with that feature would be pointless for me.

  21. @anyone who asked: The tie being on the inside doesn’t bother Sadie at all-but you could easily leave it off and wear it plain, if you were to do the reversible dress. ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. Adorable! I can’t pick a side : ) I think the roller skate dress is my favorite pattern!

  23. I am in love with the fort firefly line and these two fabrics are so lovely. The rollerskate dress is a great staple and you can never have too many ๐Ÿ˜‰
