feather and herringbone roller skate top

So, school picture day was yesterday and I got an itch to sew up something special for Sadie to wear the night before. I hoped she would like it-there’s no telling these days…but I sealed the deal by picking out some feather fabric to work with.

Sadie has a growing feather collection (she’s so hip, right?) that started after she got a turkey feather from preschool. (don’t ask me why they handed out turkey feathers) Ever since then she hunts them down wherever she goes, and each acquisition is a special occasion! My mom even brought her one back from Lake Michigan-her first white feather! (don’t worry they get thoroughly washed and disinfected…slight germaphobe here)

So I knew that feather fabric=a hit.

Well I hate to brag…. (haha)… but mama knew best, and she LOVED it. I hung it up on her dresser knob as a surprise and she was so excited when she saw it!

Oh yes and the coral flower is from The Ribbon Retreat! I love their huge selection of flowers-they are perfect for gluing to headbands and clips-instant cuteness.

I used Oliver and S’s Roller Skate dress pattern, with the tunic length. I sewed up a size 4 since Sadie has sprouted up a bit lately and it fit great! I added a lace tie on the main fabric side in the front…and it has a cute coral button on back which I forgot to take a pic of. I also made it reversible! I ADORE patterns that let you do this. Like my wrap top!

Main Fabric: Martha Negley-Farmington Feathers in Olive
Lining Fabric: Herringbone in Lake-Joel Dewberry. From Lily Bella Fabrics

As much as she loved the feathers though, this navy herringbone stole the show for her too! I was kind of surprised..but I did love it as well.

This was her face trying to persuade me to let her wear it with the navy side out. I was a mean mom and made her wear the feather side. tsk tsk, I know. ;}

  1. That’s just gorgeous and I adore the last pic, look at those eyes. Sadie is adorable and a very lucky girl with such a unique wardrobe.
Thanks as ever for the awesome inspiration.

  2. I’m siding with Sadie … I like the herringbone side too – tehe πŸ™‚

  3. Both side are equally gorgeous, I love feathers however, I’m really into navy at the moment – so this is perfect, you have given inspiration to me and I think I need one like this too πŸ™‚

  4. Ahh…I have been eyeing that feather fabric and hadn’t seen any garment made up in it yet. I LOVE it! I think I would do the same thing and make her wear the feather side…it tells a story and will remind you and her of her feather collecting days πŸ™‚

  5. Beautiful top! This pattern is on my list to sew. Might be a dumb question, but did you do anything special to make it reversible or did you just use a pretty fabric for the lining and follow the pattern as-is? Thanks!

  6. Cute top! And I hate(d) those darn bird feathers coming in. We just stuck ours in a ziploc to admire and washed those hands! My 13 yr. old brought one in from the beach on our vacation in MI (grew up there) this summer. It sat near the door and then went in the trash, thank you! UCK!

  7. Such a cutie! Love the fabrics. And she must be so tiny! My 5 year old that just started kindergarten is in size 6. Sometimes I wish she were tinier, uses less fabric. πŸ˜‰

  8. I love that it is reversible! That is so economical! The feather fabric is very cute. Thanks for sharing! I’d love for you to link your outfit to our Fall Clothing Party!!!

  9. Love this. So pretty and I love the versatility! Where do you get your patterns for the things you make for them? Or do you make the patterns yourself?

  10. I think I need a reversible top.

She is so stinking adorable, and the top is fabulous. Great fabric combo.

  11. Total cuteness!

  12. This is adorable! I have all of the Farmington Feathers to make a quilt for my daughter! Love those feathers πŸ™‚

  13. Love that herringbone and her reaction to the tunic. πŸ™‚

  14. You’ve just convinced me I really need to buy the Rollerskate pattern! Sadie looks adorable, and I love that the top is reversible. Beautiful fabric choices.

  15. I have this pattern but haven’t got round to sewing it for our summer as I have so many beautiful dress patterns I want to sew – but you have convinced me the tunic version rocks so will be sewing that!

  16. Ahh, feathers! We were at the seaside just before my son’s sixth birthday (many years ago). There were lots of seagull feathers and he collected ALL he could find – masses! Back home I used almost all of them at his “wild” birthday party in a nearby forest. One of the activities for the kids was making headdresses out of crinkled cardboard and seagull feathers. Great fun!

  17. So simple, so elegant, so fun πŸ™‚ Your little one will love to play in it πŸ™‚

  18. WAY cute! feathers are awesome. I would totally start up a collection!

  19. I adore this! You are clearly very talented! I have the same question as Caroline; does the pattern give instructions to be able to make it reversible? Or do you have a tutorial for that? I love your work, you are truly inspiring!!!!

  20. Soooo cute! I love reversible patterns too

  21. The feather side is darling, but I love the herringbone even more. I don’t blame Sadie for wanting to wear it on that side =) And seriously, what a cute kid she is!

  22. So cute! Congratulations on sewing something you both love! That’s the best.

  23. LOVE the pattern! I have a couple of different colours in the feathers fabric – never thought to make clothes from it! Yay!

  24. Beautiful fabric! I especially like the feather pattern…so different! Thanks for sharing!

  25. I have the same fabric (different colorways) to make my girls a roller skate tunic! I love the herringbone as the reverse side. Have you seen any suggestions as to how to do a high/low skirt on this pattern?

  26. Lovely model… And she loves it πŸ˜€

  27. Love the herringbone. I would love this top in my size.

  28. Awwww that cutie pie! I love her love of feathers! I think maybe the herringbone reminds her of feathers too? Sort of looks like how I’d draw them…hehe.

  29. Cute, cute, cute!! And….pure awesomeness with the reversibility of the tunic!!

  30. Haha, I love it when a mom reveals her mean side ! I do that too with my girls ! Who’s gonna keep the picture anyway, hu ?
