Vintage May: Gingham "romper"

Hello there dahling….Vintage May is here! I am so excited! πŸ˜€

When it comes to vintage style, I am especially enamored with the style of the 40’s and 50’s. So for Sadie’s look for Vintage May, I was inspired by this picture and romper! I decided to make it a “faux romper”….basically two pieces made with the same fabric so that when worn together, it looks like a romper! Brilliant, eh? Actually, I’m sure someone else has thought of this before…but anyways. Let me have my moment in the sun, mmkay?

So for the bottom of the “romper” I made a pair of Oliver and S puppet show shorts for Sadie in a size 3T, but gathered them in a little more and used the 2T sizing for the bias tape band on the bottom. I also lined them since my gingham (from Hobby Lobby) was a little thin.

For the top, I used my Leah Tunic tutorial, changing it into a basic top, ie, leaving out the gathered portion, then added a ric rac trimmed ruffle around the neck and a faux button placket on the front! And although the whole get up is really adorable, it might be considered a bit “costumey” for normal life, so this way she can wear them separately!

Oh and I thrifted those saltwater sandals for $2 the other week. #bestthriftingever

The cream sodas I got for the shoot were a hit!…man I have not seen such serious soda drinking faces on kids before. lol. (also, another little glimpse of Charlotte’s look that you can see next Monday!)

I had to whip up a Rosie the Riveter-esque hair tie like the one the model is wearing in the inspiration shot. So cute!

We had our shoot in our quaint little downtown, and I have so many more pics to show you next week when I post Charlotte’s outfit! All I can say is….knobby little toddler knees and piggy tails. Be there!

See Kristin’s gorgeous 30’s inspired skirt with pocket tutorial over on her blog today! I pretty much want to steal it. πŸ˜‰

  1. oh that idea is very clever! Especially for my daughter who is still in nappies. It’s such a pain to have to take the whole thing off for a nappy change.

  2. Adorable! Not to mention that a two part romper makes bathroom trips much easier. Can’t wait to see Charlotte’s outfit πŸ™‚

  8. This outfit is ADORABLE! I think it looks great together–not costume like at all! The top is super sweet–great work. I LOVE gingham, checks, buffalo checks…so this was a definate treat for my eyes. My 13 year old bought a sweet pair of red and off-white gingham shorts from Johnnie B for this spring and summer-LOVE the picnic red and white look!

  9. LOVE! So cute and easy for potty breaks too πŸ™‚

  10. I LOVE THE ROMPER!! I’m going to creep on over to the skirt tutorial!!!

  11. Brilliant, I would have never thought of doing the romper as separates. It’s adorable and not costumish at all. I’m so excited for your series.

  12. I disagree that it looks costumey, but that’s also the beauty of being 4. Even if it does look like a dress-up thing, you can still get away with wearing it wherever/whenever you want. It looks great, and being able to wear the two pieces separately with other items is just bonus! (Not to mention that whole bathroom thing. Crucial for small kids.)

My girls are looking over my shoulder discussing which of them should get the same outfit … so thanks for putting the pattern specifics in the post. Ha!

  13. the red gingham is adorable on Sadie! Love the headband too πŸ™‚

  29. so cute! I steer away from making rompers for my kids because it seems like a potty disaster waiting to happen. But having the outfit look like one is a great idea.

  30. This is so cute! I love that you made it two separate pieces so it is more wearable. =)

  31. C’est gΓ©nial comme d’habitude ! Tu es talentueuse!
