button organizer redo

I was thrifting sans kids the other day (heaven!) with a couple bucks in my pocket when I spied this awesome old vintage organizer on the shelf. (vintage makes it sound cooler) It was $4.50. Sah-weet! I was sold. My mom had one like this growing up and I always loved playing with the buttons and other stuff she kept in there. Of course, it wasn’t looking so good….

ย ย

I love all these sweet little handwritten labels, but they had to go. Sorry, little old lady who used them for her picture hangers and earring backs and other things I couldn’t read. Don’t worry, it’s still loved. It’s just now loved…..but in a kicky mint color!

ย So I gave all the containers a good soak and scrub with soap and some goo gone to remove the labels. (after I shook out a few loose buttons rolling around in there…and of course kept them) Then a few coats of mint spray paint to cover up the slightly rusted ugly blue color (spray paint I used is Valspar Mirage), then cut out some simple curvy labels out of white vinyl on my Silhouette and used a gold sharpie to label them.

Sadie and I had a grand old time organizing them by color! Ok, I got sick of sorting about halfway through and Sadie finished it. She’s slightly OCD at heart, that one.

I love how it turned out-these kinds of easy projects make me so happy-they’re easy and quick but can make a big impact. Or in this case, they can house a bunch of buttons very nicely. And also spur a craft room re-organization spree! I’ve been up to my eyeballs in cleaning, purging, and working on some new projects to make my craft room more efficient and easier to work in. It’s been a big mess for awhile, and I’ve had enough! So look for some more posts soon with some organizational ideas and projects. I can’t wait!

  2. NICE!

  3. It’s awesome and really wonderful!! The colour you chose, the labels, and I’m sure your daughter enjoyed the time together sorting all the buttons and will continue to enjoy playing with them or just watching them in the little drawes, like you did, like I did =)

  4. Such a great idea!!:)

  5. Such a perfect way to store buttons …. gotta find me one of these. ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Love it! Great redo and the perfect cabinet for buttons. I really love how you got your daughter in there to do the tedious work. It was a “learning moment” and you grabbed it! “yeah, help mom and practice sorting colors!”

  7. I love the new look on the blog! It’s simple, clean, and beautiful! I love the color choice, and the simple header. Good job!

  8. I love having things organized… I bought a thread rack a few weeks ago and it has been AMAZING. I can only dream of one day having my buttons organized. =) I love the new color and pretty labels.

  9. That organizer is so cute! Did you have to use special paint so the paint doesn’t scratch off?

  10. Dang, lady! You’ve got a lot of buttons! (Someday…)

  11. My daughter would love to play with all those buttons! She knows as soon as her 2-year-old brother goes to sleep, she’s allowed to play with the button stash ๐Ÿ™‚ This would be button nirvana! -Jen

  12. That button organizer is a dream. So is having a daughter who sorted half the buttons for you! I’m crossing my fingers that Natalie likes to hang out in my sewing corner with me.

  13. Wow, I love that it is metal and you could paint it! I have my Mother’s old one, but it is black sort of bakelite and I don’t think it would paint up well. I gave it to my daughter to store her beads in, after I moved all Mom’s buttons to my button jars! Nice thrift!

  14. You had me at ‘organizer.’ And then ‘thrifting.’ ๐Ÿ™‚ Love.
I have been on a big de-cluttering kick, which mostly means taking stuff to Goodwill (and staying away from thriftstores)… I need to follow your lead and find things to help organize the stuff I still have. ๐Ÿ™‚
Loving your new look, btw. ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. I saw you post this on instagram the other day and it inspired me to get my buttons in order as well- I had my daughter help me sort them also and it occupied our afternoon very nicely! I’m looking forward to your posts on organizing your craft things-I need some inspiration too because my sewing area looks crazy!

  16. This is a great idea! Simple, but totally functional.

  17. oh how I want this hehe you made it look awesome!
