Wizard of Oz cupcake toppers

So my mom and sister have been rehearsing/performing in our local production of Wizard of Oz for the past months…and from what I hear, have been having a blast! My mom was in charge of the make-up which was amazing, and my sister did the cutest dance in the Emerald City scene. Their closing night was last Saturday, and my mom hired me to make some cupcakes for the cast! My mind started whirling and of course I had to hop on Pinterest, Flickr, and google for some inspiration! This is what I came up with!

I decided to go with flat fondant toppers-they were easier to make than 3-D ones (or I’d imagine they were easier), and I made sure to do most of the main characters in the story. (forgot Glinda, oops!)

Toto!
Dorothy! Well, her ruby slipper (which I dusted with luster dust! loved it!)
The Scarecrow!
A mainly filler topper-the word OZ.
The Tin Man.
This was my all time favorite-the yellow brick road, complete with poppies!
My second fav was the lion!
Gotta have that rainbow.
And the wicked witch’s hat.

Everything was going smoothly….cupcakes came out perfectly… (recipe here)

Frosting went well-yes two are missing toppers apparently I can’t add 36 and 36 together. Math never was my strong suit.

Looking fabulous, right?

dun dun DUN.

Sooo…..I was getting one of my carriers out of the fridge right before my mom came and the bottom dropped out. (it didn’t latch all the way I think) The entire bottom tray was a bust as you can see. The other two trays were banged up and frosting slid everywhere!

Luckily (after shedding a few tears and grabbing my phone to document the tragedy…hardcore blogger all the way!) I grabbed my two dozen extras (thank goodness the recipes made a lot!),ย  tossed the floor ones (except for the toppers that survived), wiped the frosting off the toppers and trays as best I could, and soldiered on. Those two trays looked a bit battle-worn, but I was SO happy that my “client” was my mom, as she is super laid back and was great about the whole thing. (and will be getting even more of a discount now, lol)

The cast enjoyed them a lot (especially the main characters with their individual cupcakes!) and my mom just told them she jostled the case on the way. I told her to tell them what really happened but she’s too nice! (I have an awesome mom)

So all’s well that ends well!

  14. Oh dear, I might have had to have a toddler tantrum at the end there, although perhaps having toddlers yourself rather precludes that, that and the baby bump! Glad your mum was okay with it all anyway :o)
