LEGO DUPLO Bricks and Books set review and giveaway!

Hey gals! I have a really fun and creative product to share with you today, courtesy of LEGO DUPLO. They have created this new line of Read and Build toys where you…build with blocks while you read a book! (bet you didn’t see that one coming! lol.) Seriously, I was really excited when I heard about these because I knew Sadie would absolutely love them! Plus they are educational and help with building those fine motor skills. They are also perfect for preschoolers who are learning to read, since they slow down and really take each page in more thoroughly.

We received the Grow Caterpillar Grow! set, which was perfect for my animal loving girl. Each page has very clear instructions on how to assemble the caterpillar, which grows a few bricks each page, plus another animal friend! She and I both loved the adorable illustrations and bright colors of the book and blocks.

I loved watching the wheels turn in her mind to translate the picture instructions into building her block toys. She listened very intently to the story, too, and seemed to enjoy taking her time with it! More so than her usual flipping through the pages semi-impatiently.

She’s just getting into the sounding-out-words phase of learning to read, and so we’ve been working with her on letter sounds and how they go together. She can get frustrated easily (Rory blames that personality trait on yours truly, but I digress), but I think she really wants to read like her older best friend Rayne, so she keeps trying. I’m so proud of her willingness to try! She’s really growing up so fast, and reminds me all the time that she’s going to kindergarten next year. YIKES! Slow down, time!

So, back to the story: eventually the baby caterpillar grows into a beautiful rainbow caterpillar (so cute, right?!), and has a few cute little friends to play with as well.

Snail, froggy, and beetle. Love their cute little eyes! Sadie named them Rainbow the Caterpillar, Snoozy the Snail, Willy the Frog, and Bianca the Beetle. (Ok so I named Bianca but she approved it so we’re good)

Sadie loved this Read & Build set, and so did I. I can’t wait to get the others in the collection-asap!

  3. I think just getting my daughter interested in what the page says about the blocks will help her learn!

  4. Wow! I had no idea these were out! My daughter would love this! She is 5 and has speech problems but learned about catapillers the other day and can not stop talking about metamorphasis! To funny that she can say that but not other words! This would be a great learning toy!

  5. My daughter is in the same situation as yours that she loves to just flip thorugh the pages. I really think this will slow her down and make her think about what she is seeing.
    Thanks,
    Erin

  6. What a coincidence. I purchased this set for a friend’s son a few weeks ago and I just purchased another set today for another friend’s daughter. Incidentally, it was the same snail set. I love that they can be used by little ones and slightly older children as well

  7. oh my goodness, my hubby would LOVE this for our daughter!

  8. WE are Lego fanatics in our house! I got a subscription to the Lego magazine for our 4yo but the games and comics in it are a bit too much for her. These sets look like they would be perfect, since we are in the first level on those learning to read books and here we have the addition of great duplo blocks.

  9. Oh how cool! I am a homeschooling Momma, and love to find cool, interesting books to add to my library. This set by Lego looks awesome, not only do you get a cute book, but you get some great building blocks too! Thanks for showing me these πŸ™‚

  10. I can see my son enjoying these when he gets a little bit older. But I can also see his big sisters helping him to enjoy them now, by reading the book, and putting the toys together.

  11. Very cool. My little one is just about ready for Duplos. Would love to get her started!

  12. the bright colors & hands-on activity will attract children to books

  13. I would love to have my three year old play with these! So fun!

  14. I’m not sure if it will help my daughter to read but will increase her love of books! Thanks for the giveaway!

  15. Anything that gets kids interested in books will help them develop a love for and interest in reading! These are so fun & will make great gifts for my littles!

  16. I think it would at least help my daughter be interested in reading when she’s ready! Thanks for the giveaway!

  17. I think this would give my daughter some great practice in identifying how letters (and sounds) combine to make words.

  18. I know this would help my daughter learn to read because it would capture her interest and give her motivation. What a wonderful product!

  19. I think this would both hold their attention and allow for repetitiveness.

  20. I LOVE it! I can see how it would make the book more interesting, AND it’s a perfect introduction on how you can use printed instructions to build/make something. Promoting DIY’s of the future.

  21. I think my boys might actually sit and pay attention if blocks are involved. That would be helpful:)

  22. Cool! I think just the lure of creating something cool would build up concentration skills tha are essential for reading.

  23. Oh! My 2 year old daughter really loves playing with her big brothers’ legos! And reading (being read to), nothing is more fun for her! A combo of the two sounds like the perfect toy!!!

  24. My little man is learning to read and, as I type, is peering over my shoulder asking to see more pictures of the “blocks”. I’d say a DESIRE to use this program is going to be the biggest advantage!!
    Thanks!!

  25. Kids are motivated to read when they are interested in the content. What kid doesn’t love legos?

  26. My daughter is 4 and she knows the letters and sounds but isn’t able/won’t try to put the sounds together. I don’t know if this would help but I think she’d really like it. I am glad you reviewed this because I’d seen it somewhere and it didn’t look very tempting, but once I saw the review I totally want to get her a set! πŸ™‚

  27. So awesome! I have two little boys that groan at the mention of anything to do with letters or reading. They read BOB books at night, but with much sighing and carrying on, so I think these might help. The legos are like the spoonful to sugar to help the medicine go down!

  28. We are HUGE Lego fans at our house and I just saw these books/Duplo sets at the store the other day and wondered if they were cool. My son and daughter would love to build as we read along!

And have you seen the Friends “girl” Lego sets? http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Friends-ByTheme/?CMP=KAC-SAHGOOGLEUS&HQS=lego+friends. They’re pretty awesome and both my son and daughter love them too!

  29. With a two-year old, he can’t read yet. But we play with Legos daily. He can sing songs and remember storylines though. With this set, I feel like he would remember the story better. Then when he’s a little bigger, he can know what the word is and pick out the letters in it.

  30. I am a literacy tutor. This kind of book is great for helping small children develop pre-literacy skills. They learn to look for information on the page, even if they can’t read the words yet. Great idea, Lego!

  31. I would love to win this for my son! thanks for the chance

  32. I shared it on twitter https://twitter.com/marialeads

  33. We spied these sweet sets on vacation and immediately put the on our Christmas wish list! As a former teacher I LOVE the hands on approach to learning to read. My girl will have those blocks together lickety split!

  34. My son would love these, even though he’s already reading! He would benefit from following the simple instructions.

  35. I love the idea of following the book in order to build something.

  38. I think that the blocks would help my daughter to stay interested in the book long enought to sound out the words! What a fun product!
    ashleycrouch(at)gmail(dot)com

  39. I think it will give an opportunity to connect something physical with words in the book. I think visual cues are always important for kids to learn by association

  40. My son loves Legos and books. Combining the two would be magical for him!

  41. How cute! I think my kids are going to love this since they love leggos and they love books.

  42. This is such a cool idea! I love the reading skills built in to the love of legos. Our kids would love these sets!

  44. Oh I have been so excited to get my daughter another set of duplos lately (we have one small set). Other than books, it’s the toy she plays with the longest. Can I just tell you, I think this is genius! I think a lot of early reading starts with association and memorization. So when you read the words “orange rectangle block” and point to the words and then find the matching block they start to put together “oh, those words say that!” It’s all about the early connections and the sooner the better. No parent will complain if their child is an early reader right? haha

  45. great activity to do with my child–pointing out words to help her learn about the process of building something.

  46. Wow, these are so cool! I am going to have to get these for my daughter! I wonder if 2 is too young? She is not quite at stacking blocks yet…maybe Christmas…

  47. Twitter post:

  49. The grands LOVE legos! We just handed down some that we had been saving for 20 years! Would love to buy some new sets!

  50. I don’t think that we have any toys that come with books – the kids would love reading about what they make. Especially since it’s Legos!

  51. Love your pictures and review! Ansley loves legos (did you know they have Snow White?!) and she’s interested in reading so I think these would be perfect for her!

  52. These are so cute !! What a great idea. My kiddos would love this book.

  53. Love this idea! Saw them on tv the other day. My daughter is young and likes books and loves her brothers Legos. To put the two together would really peak her interest I think! She would love to build along with the story and it might even hold her attention more to read the whole story!

  54. My son would love to read this together and build.

  55. the best thing about this is that it is fun! If reading is fun, my little ones will love doing it!

  67. Words are made from letters, sentences are made from words, and books are made from sentences…reading is all about building just like with LEGOS.

  68. This is a great way to teach them how to follow directions and learn to read as they play-yeah!

  69. These are fantastic! I love that they can learn by doing!

  70. this might get my 3 year old (who hates “school work”) interested in learnign some letters – and to write his name!!!

  71. This is adorable! I have only one left to learn to read. The best I know of to encourage reading is reading aloud to and with your children. This lego book and blocks activity would encourage just that. And I’m sure there’s some good right brain left brain stuff in there too with the visual/ kinethestetic learning. πŸ™‚
    Thanks!

  72. I think putting the words together with an action would help kids learn to read. These books are a great idea and I had no idea they existed!

Having helped many kids to read, I think this set would be especially helpful for kids that are not motivated to read. What a fun idea! ~Jamie Neff

  74. My daughter is a tactile learner so i think having the blocks to use along with the story will help her slow down and concentrate on what she’s doing more. The books sound awesome!

  75. This comment has been removed by the author.

  76. My child is a VERY hands on learner and this will help her connect words with objects.

  77. It’s proven that children learn better with multiple ways to learn. I think hands on while learning definitely helps me to remember new information so why not for our little ones. You’ve got hands on with the blocks, sight with the book and audible when reading aloud.

  78. All I know is that my kids LOVE legos and Duplos and books, and the combo is a sure-fire way to get them interested in reading. My 4 kids would love to win this one!

  79. Kids love Legos so naturally they will want to look at and read a Lego book, too!

  85. My daughter is 3 and already LOVES Lego Duplo blocks, Santa brought her quite a few sets for Christmas. She also loves to read, she is learning some words now, and this is a great way to teach reading because of how the kids will be engaged in the book. It’s one of those awesome toys that are educational without the kiddos knowing it! Would love to win!

  86. My husband tells me we NEED more Legos. I think I can accept that if I win a gift card for some.

  87. My daughter is 18 months old right now, but she loves books and pretends to read all the time. She also loves blocks and an activity bringing the two together could only help her speech development and, eventually, her reading.

  88. Oh I’d love this for my daughter who is in that transitional stage of learning early words right now. This would be GREAT! We are huge Lego DUPLO fans!

  89. My 4 year old is asking to learn how to read and she loves to build. Duplo is perfect since I have a 1 year old. She likes to be the big and I think the building in between reading will give her a break and help her not get so frustrated.

  90. Such a great idea. I love it! Thanks for the chance to win.

  91. I would really love to win this for my daughter. It would make a great birthday present.

  92. so cute! my little guy loves legos and loves books, he would be over the moon about this!

  94. I love the interaction option – definitely helps kids learn to really remember what they read. So fun!

  95. My kids are all grown; however, my grandkids would love this because they love legos and a book that pulls legos into it would get their attention.

  96. I love that this will help my kids comprehend the story. The first step comprehension is using thir tactile senses. I can’t wait to use them with my kids and in my home daycare!

  97. I would hope he would be so engaged that he would want to hear the book again and again. That memorizing and then “reading” it is a great help in learning to read!

Plus, he usually has his big sisters build all of his things, so it would be nice for him to do something on his own!

  98. Having an activity while reading the book is such a great idea! My daughter would want this read over and over again.

  99. The book looks very colorful and fun. Having the legos to connect with is a great hands on way to learn how to read!

  100. I think the duplo blocks would help reinforce the story, and my daughter would love them (in a couple years), and my husband would love them now πŸ™‚

  101. We love duplos and books… perfect!

  102. Cannot believe no one thought of this before πŸ™‚ What a great idea!! Thanks for the giveaway!

  112. This is the cutest toy: reading and blocks – you can’t go wrong! Any time you have manipulatives that accompany a story, children are usually more excited about the story. (Throwing out an instructional word there, sorr.) I would love to win a set. Thanks for the giveaway!

  113. Love the idea and resulting product. It will be useful in helping my little one learn hand eye coordination. Hope I get to try it out.

  114. active reading is certainly a good thing for my very active boys!

  115. This is so cool! My son would just love this. Thanks for the give away and the post!

My daughter (and husband) love Duplo and reading. I think both of them would love these books! I’ve tried making Duplo shapes on paper for her to build, but I think she’d take to animals with much more enthusiasm!
    terri_weese(at)yahoo(dot)com

  123. My little girl loves, loves, loves her books. I think she almost has a better attention span than daddy for reading. As you mentioned, I really like the tactile nature of these sets…not to mention that the Duplo animals are just stinkin’ cute. amandabieghlerATgmailDOTcom

  124. What a fun way to make a book interactive. My oldest is trying to read based on pictures right now. I think having a little extra interaction with the book will help him to want to read the book even more so we can also focus on the sound/letter connection.

  125. My very active three year old boy LOVES to build with Legos and has shown interest in reading, but he won’t sit still long enough to really learn about letters and words. This looks like it could really help hold his attention and help him learn basics of reading! Thanks for the chance to win!

  126. I love these little sets! My little girl would like figuring them out πŸ™‚

  127. these look fantastic, and perfect for my 4 year old son!

  133. When books have good pictures it s easier for children to recognize words based on the pictures. Fun giveaway!

  134. That looks like an awesome way to involve kids! My nephews (the DUPLO fiends) would love these books! Josiah would definitely be into the story, and Lucas will be starting to read soon… Thanks for the giveaway, I will definitely be looking out for these books!

    mnethia at yahoo dot com

  135. I think it would help with connecting meaning to the words on the page.

  136. This would help Daniel’s object manipulation skills and hand eye coordination.

  137. These sets are sweet! I think this would help my four-year-old (almost five-year-old) who struggles with motivation as I’m trying to teach him to read. He LOVES legos, and it looks like this would give him the extra push he needs!

  138. My daughter is 3 and would love this! She is getting into looking at directions and following them!

  139. Wow, what a great product! I think the LEGO DUPLO Read & Build will help my kids learn to read with all those fun colors block building and interaction. For sure this is a lot more fun than just reading the book.

  141. What a fun idea!

  142. DDs love LEGO, this combination is such a great motivation to them in reading while playing with LEGO.
    tcarolinep at gmail dot com

  143. I am sure my daughter will love this!!! what a great idea

  144. love this!!!

  145. The book combined with the Lego Duplos is an awesome way to get children interested in what the book is saying! My 2 1/2 y.o. daughter is still a ways away from any formal reading instruction but we read books all the time and she loves to “reread” them and make up her own stories to the pictures. I think the Duplos add another layer that deepens the learning by physically making something and participating in the book even more. It helps build many more connections in the brain when connecting multiple experiences. Not only is she reading about the characters but she could also make them! Love this idea!

  146. Jess: I think this would be the perfect gift for my 3 1/2 year old granddaughter. She is at the stage of putting sounds with letters, and she follows direction well. I’ll have to get her some. Thanks for introducing me to this great learning tool.

  147. Books and blocks! What a great combination. Both my kids are nuts for both – but we’ve never used them together. I think that would be super motivating. Maybe teach them the beginnings of reading and following directions. πŸ™‚ Very cool!

  148. I actually commented to my husband last night about how we should get these for our son who is having trouble with his speech! Then I stumbled onto your awesome blog today! Great timing eh?? These would be great!

  149. My daughter liked the idea of the one with the airplane, because it had a girl too. Thanks for turning us on to what looks like a great product can’t wait to order some for the littles in our family.

  150. My son loves this idea and has from the moment he first saw it. I would hope this would help with word recognition the more we played.

  151. This could help my child learn to read by engaging them in an activity that helps them truly interact with the text, by way of the building blocks. Very cool product!

  152. Great way to get my daughter interested in books and reading!

  153. we already use them to talk about colors and shapes, why not reading? this is a great idea and my 3 yo would love it and really sit still for these projects!

  154. this will help my kids have more fun learning
    [email protected]

  155. A couple of my kids have Sensory Processing Disorder and ADHD. They use small hand held toys / objects to help them concentrate on stories at school and circle time. This would be great to keep their focus to read while having hands on building.

  156. My daughter would absolutely love these new books! Thanks for sharing.

  157. This would encourage fine motor skills as well as early reading.

  158. I love this idea! These are brilliant! I think that by building the insect, animal, character, etc it will help her associate the text to the picture, thus expanding her site-word vocabulary. Our daughter is constantly playing and building with blocks and reading so the combination of the two is a win-win! Kudos to Legos! πŸ™‚

  159. I think that by having something to keep attention and keep kids interacting it will help them read. Some kids have a difficult time sitting still and doing something. This may help keep their attention.

  160. I am hoping to homeschool, and think this would be a fun tool to use!

    [email protected]

  161. it will add extra incentive and excitement to reading

  162. I am a mom and teacher and know that children learn best by experiencing things first hand and using manipulatives. Lego came up with a great idea to combine reading and toy play to help encourage kids to read. If kids feel like something is fun they are more likely to do it. This set will provide incentive for reading especially among the reluctant readers.

  163. This looks like a terrific idea! My four year old son would probably love the book and toy combination.

  164. My son absolutely LOVES legos. I think the key to learning is engaging the child, capturing their attention, working with their imagination. I think the Lego Duplo Build and read, would be fun for my son. And when your having fun, learning is wasy. Incorporating something he loves, likes legos, and adding in books (which he loves), would be a great tool to helping my son polish up his reading skills. This would b wonderful!

  165. This is great…it’ll keep my son engaged. Reading and playing together is a great combination!

  186. What a great giveaway!! I have been wanting to upgrade my kids Legos and this looks like the perfect next step up from Mega Blocks! My little girl seems to be at the same stage as yours, wanting to sound out words. So I think this book and lego set will help her, especially since she will feel she is following instructions on building too. Love all the critters included to build! I might just buy one asap to bring on a road trip!

  187. I think having a book he can interact with will definitely encourage my 3 year old to read!

  188. Both my boys love Legos. I saved my sets from when I was younger and they play with those also. Lego Duplo Read and Build is an excellent idea for kids that are interested and reading and definitely for those that aren’t. My oldest has fun putting together Lego sets using the instructions and making things off the top of his head. Legos in general are a great learning tool.

  189. My son loves books and is just getting into Duplos and building!

  199. I think this would especially help children who are getting to the stage of wanting to do everything by themselves. Now they can look at the book and see how to build a creature all on their own.

  203. Anytime you mix instruction with playing you are going to learn if you are a kid. With these, they have that plus the added benefit of a story to go with all the learning! Bonus!
