lucky dress part 1: pattern and sleeves

Alright! Here’s part one of the Lucky dress sew-along!

See more after the jump!

You’ll need:
main fabric (1 yard did it for my 2.5 year old)
lining fabric (I used some muslin-1 yd)
contrast fabric (3/4 yd for me)
single fold bias tape 1/2″ wide
matching thread
paper for pattern (dress or shirt to trace)
buttons (metal ones to cover or regular)

So first you’ll need a pattern-I traced around a shirt to get the top of the bodice shape, and then drew an A-line shape for the skirt part. Tracing a similar dress/skirt can help!

I measured Sadie from her neck down (on her back) to see how long I wanted it. You’ll be adding an extra 2″ (for the faux lining) to the bottom, but still hemming the main part, so keep that in mind.

Cut 2 on the fold for the front. (main and lining)

Cut 4 for the back, adding 1.5″ to the middle of the dress to allow for seams and the button overlap. (main fabric and lining, cut them right sides together.)

Then I made my sleeve patterns-by tracing the inside of the slope and extending it up a bit to allow for gathering.

Then I made one more a little wider.

Then I cut 2 of each pattern on the fold (the flat short bit on top), in both the main and contrast fabric.

This is where I made an oopsie! I was planning on sewing the bias tape to the straight side, but thoughtlessly sewed it on to the curved side. It still worked out though!

So on all four  pieces, open the bias tape up, and pin it right sides together along the curved (or straight edge) and sew along the ironed line.

Then flip over, pin and sew close to the edge, making sure to catch the bottom side of the bias tape. Continue for all 4 pieces.

Then I made the pattern for my bib -just draw a shape like this on some paper and adjust til it fits your front piece.

Next: the pleats on the scoop detail!
