nicey jane skirt and the dreaded training of the potty.

Sometimes it’s nice to just sew something easy, with no thought involved. (well, minimal)

Like a skirt-this literally about 20 minutes start to finish.

I had this scrap of Nicey Jane from Anna begging to be made into a skirt-it was the perfect size, no cutting required. Awesome.

Added some vintage trim along the bottom gifted to me by my cousin-in-law Courtenay, and called it a day.

I think I’ll be building up her skirt stash in her wardrobe-anything to make potty training easier.

Although she’s going mostly nekked besides her underpants these days.

Yes, we started potty training last week! Any tips? I know you guys have got some tips for me. LAY it on! We’re not doing so well but she’s trying hard! And I’m trying hard to be patient with her. And Charlotte’s trying hard to deal with being left in the hall outside the bathroom door twenty times a day.

We all have our problems, sister. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. Ugh, my heart started pounding faster when I read “potty training”. That was my most dreaded time, but by the 3rd child I just didn’t do it. I waited and waited, my Mom came to town one week and said “what!?” So she took away the diapers and my daughter had maybe 3 or 4 accidents that week but we were done (she was about 32 months). DONE!
With my other two we started earlier and it was lots of waiting and bribing and messes. With this one, I didn’t feel all that pressure of “good Mommy’s potty train @ 2” thing.
Hope that helps.. Best of Luck!
Oh Yeah, super cute skirt too!

  2. Its good to keep her naked. Try putting her potty in the kitchen/playroom wherever you guys are most of the day so she’s not trying to hold it all the way to bathroom. Plus if it’s somewhere she’ll see it often she remembers better to go. You know “Out of sight out of mind”. I got my daughter fully potty trained in a little over a week and I just decided to be more stubborn than her. Once I decided no more diapers, I never put a diaper back on her in the daytime. She only wore them at naps & night. Granted, that was a week we didn’t go many places (only to church and I took the potty chair with us). Even for a long time after that we took the potty chair everywhere and would often stop on the side of the road and she would pee in the back of the car. LOL. Have fun!! Oh yeah BTW, The farmers almanac says the best days this month to start potty training are the 25-28 and the 1-6 of next month. I did start my daughter on the days that the almanac said. Just as a little side note. LOL

  3. Great skirt! I especially love the trim ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Beautiful skirt! and what a coincidence I’m also potty training!!!

  5. great skirt. ๐Ÿ™‚ I would have never have thought of that, glad you put it to use! Very clevah! good luck on the potty training. I think every kid is different, so maybe what works for some, doesn’t work for others. I know that with Natalie it was a looooong process, but emily was done and ready the moment I put her in underwear.

  6. I am not an experienced in the sewing department, but have been wanting to make a skirt just like this! Maybe I will give it a try.

  7. love that skirt-that trim is perfect for it!

i waited for all my kids until they wanted to go on the potty-my son who will be 3 on the 28th decided he wanted to Friday night and that’s it-he tells me and he’s doing great-i still can’t believe it good luck!

  8. I wait till they are older (usually 3) and all 4 of my kids have been potty trained in less than 5 days (2 days with one) with minimal accidents. My ped says their bodies just aren’t usually ready as early as 2. I don’t use potty chairs, just the normal toilet and they get a treat when they go successfully. I ask them about every 10 minutes if they need to go, but don’t force them. Potty training has been so easy for us….not because of anything I’ve done really…just because I waited till they were older and physically ready to do it. Then it’s just a cinch.

  9. I love the skirt! Super cute!

As for potty training. I tried with my girls at about 2 1/2 and they wanted nothing to do with it. I kept the portable potty seat out in the living room and they would sit on it and have their dolly’s “use” it for awhile and we had the seat for in the bathroom too. Sometimes you have to wait until the child is ready is the way I think about it. My girls were doing good for awhile then started having accidents all the time so I backed off a bit and let they figure it out …if they really wanted to do it they would. Well soon enough they did and it only took a few days. My middle child learned, on her own terms, in a week! My third child ..my most stubborn..took a bit longer but she got it and has been perfectly good ever since. I would suggest that she sit on her potty about once an hour for about 10 minutes to get her used to sitting there and doing her business. It is frustrating at times but I also offered treats if she went #1 or #2. Also if she had a day with no accidents. We also had a chart that we would put stickers on to keep track of her going without problems and it made her very proud to be able to put her stickers on there.

  10. For starters, Sadie WILL get it eventually! With Ginny I added regular (every hour or so) potty breaks into our daily routine, and if she went, great. If not, no big — maybe next time. We did implement a sticker chart, which motivated her for a while, but I can’t honestly say it was the driving force behind her finally getting it. I do advise you to know where the restrooms are (and the quickest route to them) at any public place you visit regularly. When Ginny did start telling me she needed to go, the urge always seemed to hit (and still does) when we’re away from the house.

  11. P.S. We didn’t have a training potty, either. Just one of those little seat inserts. We had to tote it around with us for a while. Delightful.

  12. cute skirt, my 2nd has just come out of nappies, you’ve got to wait till they are ready or it just won’t work, my son was nearer to 3, but little O is just over two & half, we do have to have the potty in the same room as her, so she knows where it is when she needs it, i found it far easier to say ‘let’s do a wee before’ we do such & such, as when i ask her ‘do you need a wee’ the answer was always ‘no’!

  13. super adorable skirt! looks pretty easy too!

good luck on the potty training. it took a ton of patience on my part with my daughter but she is doing great now!

  14. I’m getting ready to potty train Gavin too! He’s only 2, but he gets bad rashes on his super-sensative bum, so my doctor recommended trying for it. With Kadie, it was really easy once we cracked down on it. Daddy mostly did it cuz he’s a bit more patient then me.
We put her in panties and didn’t put the diaper on except at night so she didn’t think it was okay to go in her pants. A couple accident made her realize she couldn’t. We did the insert on the potty instead of a little one cuz she felt more like a “big girl”. We would put her on every 15 minutes for a whole day, and we definintely bribed with treats. She was potty trained in about 2-3 days. But they are all different, of coarse, so you gotta find what works best for her! Good luck!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  15. Hey Jess!

I wrote an article for an online site on this topic. Just 4 easy tips that we use.

    http://www.friendsfamilyandlaughter.com/life/cat/family/potting_training_tips_from_a_non-expert

Good luck! Potty training is not for the faint of heart!

  16. that skirt is darling! I have yet to make a skirt….why is that? I’ve made shirts, which are way harder and more intensive!…..I think it’s because I am nervous about the elastic measurement….got any tips? sin’t it suppose to be 2 inches longer than your childs waist measurement…..? It’s confusing for me. Again, I dont know why, just my weirdo brain!
And on the potty training topic…My daughter is 15 months and has just started! I know! It’s way early, but she todl us she was ready and is doing pretty well! We put her on the potty or ask her every 20 or 30 minutes and have been successful so far.

  17. The skirt is ADORABLE! ๐Ÿ™‚

As for potty training I know a timer helped both of us (the girl I watch and myself) to remember to do it. We set it for 30 minutes and she had to try every time the timer went off. Just an idea! ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. I am almost at the end of potty training my first! She is going to be 4 in may! Haha I know we are super slow and she is super stubborn like her momma. My husband had a collection of pez dispensers that he used as a kid and she always wanted them! Go poop on the potty get a pez dispenser with candy…..have an accident….take one away! We were only having problems with going number 2 on the potty!

  19. Love the skirt!

Good luck with the potty training. We’re not there yet so I’ll have to refer to this post for tips too. ๐Ÿ™‚

One thing that did occur to me the other day was having clothes that are easy to get on and off. Also it never hurts to sit on the toilet a few minutes before getting in the car to go somewhere and always knowing where the closest restroom is. ๐Ÿ™‚ Good luck!

  20. Adorable skirt! My little girl will be 2 on Friday and is currently potty training. Although, I am the one dragging my feet. She has been trying to train herself for months now! So as of Monday I decided to jump on board. (I know that sounds mean, but it’s been a really rough couple of months for our family:o)

We do potty treats everytime she tries to use the potty. Potty dances when she goes. We also call grandma, auntie, and cousins so they can celebrate with us. She totally digs the phone calls:o)

I don’t do pull ups, just the padded training pants. She went through the night with no accidents! WoooHooo!

Good luck with your little sweetie!

  21. Love the skirt! We started Potty training my little one this last month, and she wore lots of dresses & skirts to make it easy! I feel like after a month, she will pee on command, but has no interest in taking herself… not quite sure how to transition from here to really being ‘potty trained’! Good luck!

  22. I got nothin’ on Potty training, except to wish you good luck!!!

Awesome simple skirt, the trim is perfect! Glad you could use it!!
    Love you!

  23. My best tip…candy. I rewarded my kids with a candy (one skittle or m&m) for pee and 3-4 candies for #2. It really helped with motivation.

  24. Super cute skirt. I may have to make one exactly like it. Okay, not exaaactly, but, you know, similarly awesome. ๐Ÿ™‚

Also, best of luck with the potty training. I obviously have no advice, but reading through everyone else’s helpful comments has been very insightful/educational. Please do let us know when/how you and Sadie get it all worked out!

Wishing you a happy (and pee-on-the-floor-free) day. ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. My best advice to you is get them out of diapers and pull ups. Let them wear underwear and keep potties handy for when they realize at the last minute they have to go. This worked very well for my two (1 boy and 1 girl).

  26. the key for potty training for us was finding a reward my daughter really wanted…fruit snacks and movies (sigh) but what can you do? my son did it so quickly and so well (first child) and then our second (girl) took a little longer but we kept her in underwear, and i just told her at the outset that i would need to take her every 15 minutes for a while and she couldn’t cry but she could earn stickers and prizes etc. then we lengthened out the time gradually and it worked pretty well. when she had accidents she helped clean them up (putting clothes in washer…plastic gloves…whatever worked) and try to stay calm…just repeat it to yourself…calm…calm…calm….:)you can do it! good luck.

    the skirt is adorable!

  27. The BEST way to make potty training less stressful?? Be consistent. Wake up in the morning, on the potty. Have breakfast, then on the potty. Ready to lay down for a nap? Go on the potty first. Wake up from nap? Time to sit on the potty! Want to eat lunch? First go sit on the potty and wash your hands! Afternoon snack? Go potty afterwards. Dinner time? First go sit on the potty and wash your hands! Time for bed? Go potty, and brush the teeth! (adjust the schedule to fit your/your child’s life…but essentially LOTS of scheduled potty times.)
Also, a nicely cushioned potty seat, plus an extra potty chair for wherever in the house you think it’s most convenient are pluses. I’ve now helped potty train one niece, and one nephew. And I have completely potty trained one daughter, and am working on the second. ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. My daughter came home from a craft class with the cutest felt fortune cookies! Great for kids and they get to insert their own “fortune”. We ended up making a dozen or so and used them for our center piece on the kitchen table!!!! So easy to make. ๐Ÿ™‚

While potty training, we carried a portable potty in the back of our mini-van AND searched out ALL the bathrooms at our regular haunts so we didn’t have accidents(just like being pregnant!) We also did “proud of you” rewards….a bead (in a tiny jar) for letting me know when she had to go. When she got five or so, we did something SHE wanted to do….usually it involved Chuck E. Cheese or watching a DVD together.

  29. Juice, movies, and nudity worked for us. I pumped her full of juice (a rare treat in such large quantities), parked her potty in front of an all day movie marathon (another rare treat), and stripped her nekked from the waist down. On the first day she never strayed from the potty. Second day she would wander a few feet but still hovered near. By the third day she could go about her usual business and only come back when she needed to go. Fourth day we were pantied and pantsed and even ventured to Wal Mart for a few minutes because we were all going bonkers and it was raining. GOOD LUCK!

  30. I dont know if somebody already said this, and every child is different so what worked for mine may not work for little saddie! We did the bare bottom method. No panties or pants for 3 days. totally naked! After 3 days, she pretty much had the hang of it. It has been about a month and she still doesnt wear panties, just some sort of knit pant that she can get up and down by herself. We are going to start trying panties in March. It something about panties that still feel like a diaper. If there is nothing there like there was before, she has to go somewehre. Good luck ๐Ÿ™‚ That skirt is aroable!

  31. Just a quick note to let you know that a link to this post will be placed on CraftCrave today [17 Feb 12:00am GMT]. Thanks, Maria

  32. You are definitely getting a lot of advice! I thought I would chip in mine too :). Don’t get upset if she has an accident. It will be hard and frustrating if she does but just try to remember that she is LEARNING how to do a new skill. We don’t get mad at a child who falls down when they are trying to walk. I learned this the hard way! I would get so frustrated when my daughter had an accident and it only made things worse. When I treated it like is was no big deal, the accidents stopped. Best of luck!

  33. I’m in love with this fabric. I have some and I’ve been saving it for something special. Who knows what that will be. I love your little skirt, and the trim is perfect! Maybe my older girls would still like a skirt? Love your talents girl!

  34. First off I love the cute little skirt you made. Adorable! Second, potty training is so tricky. My daughter is 2 1/2 and I’ve been trying since September. I’ve tried everything from treats to new toys and even stickers. She talks about it a bunch when she plays with her dolls but still isn’t fully potty trained yet. It’s frustrating but with almost 2 month old it’s pretty tricky. Good luck! If you have any good tips I’d love to hear them. lol

  35. We’re just starting the potty training thing here too, so I really don’t have any advice for you yet.

On a totally unrelated subject, I love those decals on your walls! Did you make them with the Silhouette or are they store bought? I’m thinking they would look wonderful in my sewing studio ๐Ÿ™‚
