sew-along part 5: hem, collar, buttons

Last day of the sew-along! I hope you guys have been having fun making this shirt!Or at least, watching me make it. 😉

Also, sorry that a few of you had troubles with the sleeves! Those little buggers can be nasty.

Click below for more!

So, for today….first off, let’s hem that bad boy!
Serge or zig zag the raw edge, and fold over 1/2 inch and iron. (or fold over twice and iron)
Then sew up your hem… easy peasy! (I think I say that too much…need a new “easy” catch phrase)
Next, take that piece of fabric you cut on the bias for the collar.
I have this handy dandy little tool I got at Joann’s for about $6. (I had a 40% off coupon so it made it even cheaper!) You feed it through the tool and then…
iron it as it comes out. But if you don’t have one of these-it’s ok! It’s still easy. Just fold your piece in half lengthwise, and iron. Then, unfold it and fold each side into the crease, and iron that. Iron in half again with the two sides tucked in. Does that make sense? I sure hope so.
So, let’s start the collar. Lots o’ pictures, but don’t worry! It’s not hard.
So unfold your bias tape like this.
Then fold it in half, right sides together like this.
Then sew it together ( I usually back stitch it the whole way too)
Then trim close to your seam.
and then turn right side out. (I use a chopstick to get the corner turned out)
Now, slide one corner of your back piece into the bias tape like so, and pin it in….continue to pin it around the collar.
Then when you get to the other side, open the bias tape up…
…and then make a mark at the edge of the shirt.
Flip it right sides together, and sew it together like you did at the beginning of the collar. Turn out the corner and….
It should fit right in!
Then, slowly and carefully sew around the collar, I use the edge of my presser foot as a good guide (about 1/8″ from the edge)
tada! Then, sew your button on the back, and the front buttons…and you’re done!
Ahhh. Breathe a sigh of relief and accomplishment.
Then force it try it on your daughter and watch her try to rip it off.
Engage in tickle warfare.
Get one halfway decent shot.
I had so much fun during this sew-along! I hope you did too! If you made a shirt using this (loong) tutorial, please add it to the Flickr group!
We would all would loove to see them. I will, of course, do a post showing off everyone’s creations! Look for that sometime next week! (hopefully there will be at least one!?)and, let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks!

  1. Well I’m one day behind, I still have to attach my sleeves, and do the part for today, and I’m done! I can’t wait to send you the pictures, I think is gonna turn out very cute!!!!

  2. I’ll hopefully have one done by next week!! If I can get those sleeves!! Haha! And I vote that all your clothing tutorials should be sew-alongs. It’s so much fun/inspiring/motivating! Do it…;D

  3. What a great tutorial! I really wanted to make one of these shirts but I’ve been sick on and off this week and haven’t been up to sewing much.

  4. Okay you made that look way too easy. I hope it is. My sweet husband gave me bias tape maker for Christmas last year and it’s still in the package. It’s about time I used it. I haven’t had good luck with bias tape in the past, but it’s been a long time since I tried. Thanks for all your instructions. I’ve loved spending just a few minutes every night making this.

  5. Yay! Totally awesome tutorial. Once my little shirt is finished I will definitely be uploading it to the Flickr group. Also, seriously, you have got to tell me the product information (brand name, etc.) on that bias tape tool. Amazing. Especially since I have a 50% off coupon for JoAnn’s right now. 🙂

  6. Yay! Can’t wait to see all the finished tops! Katie-my bias tape maker says it’s a Prym 25mm, if that helps!

  7. I have been keeping up with this sew along all week, thankyou so much for sharing this great tutorial. I posted your button on my blog with intentions to sew along, but alas others things popped up – still I plan to have one finished by next week definately/hopefully? Also just a note: I love the way you put the bias tape on, I never thought of that 🙂 Thankyou!

  8. I have the same thought as Hootnz: ” … the way you put bias tape on…”. Thank you for making this sew-a-long.

  9. I’m done! Thanks so much, Jess… this was great. I’m with Nikki… would definitely love more sew-alongs in the future please! I’ll post some pics on Flickr this weekend. After I make my daughter’s Halloween costume, I’m going to make another Sadie Shirt so my youngest can have one, too.

  10. It is so, so darling! I have loved following along with this, everything is so well explained. Thanks so much for all the work you put into this series, I’ll be linking.

  11. I’ve been way behind but just have to sew on a button (after I buy a matching button hee hee or maybe I’ll just use a contrasting button. . . ) and get some pictures.

  16. Wow what a great top! I normally run (click) away from tutes that need u to make ur own pattern, but I decided to brave it out, I had only 1 snag with my neck hole initially being too small but all turned out good in the end! I’ve shared it on flickr:
