memory game tutorial

you remember those memory card games, right? so fun, and so easy to make yourself a set! i’ve seen it with pictures too!

what you’ll need:

16 wooden squares (i found mine at michael’s for 30 cents a pop, and they are 2.5 inches square)
scrapbook paper
mod podge
foam brush

cut paper into squares (2 3/8 inches fit the best) 2 each, of course. it’s great to use those scraps up!

spread a thin layer of mod podge on the wood and place the paper onto the glue. press firmly into place.

repeat for the other side, using paper that matches.

you can of course put another layer of mod podge on top of the paper, but i opted not to, cause that stuff is messy. then sand the wood for nice smooth edges.

wha-la!

  1. so cute! definitely going to make some of these and get rid of some scraps!!

  2. cute – we did this with family pictures and it is a hit!

  3. So cute & mod. Posting about it on Dollar Store Crafts on 9/17.

  4. cute! i will have to try this for my Little Bit!

  5. I see that you didn’t cover the whole tile with Modge Podge–I’m wondering if they would stand the test of time without that protective layer? Also, I covered mine with Modge Podge, and now I am having a sticking problem. Whenever I stack them and put them away they end up stuck together and I have to pry them apart. Is there anything I can do to help this?? Would sanding them a bit help or would it stratch them? You can email me at sharpefamily0824 at sbcglobal dot net. Thanks! This was a really simple and beautiful craft (despite the sticking problem). 🙂

  6. Thanks for sharing this – what a wonderful idea. Now I can finally buy some of those scrap booking papers I’ve been eyeballing.

  7. i will be linking at mypetitepurse.blogspot.com

    thanks!

  8. Your game looks great. So much nicer than something with Disney characters all over it. 🙂

  9. Cute! I went to Michael’s and could not find the squares. Anyone have ideas about where I can find these? I looked at JoAnn’s online and they did not have them either. I’m puzzled.

  10. I just made these as a Christmans gift for my nephew. So easy! So cute! So, thank you! I posted a link back to you though so you could get credit for this wonderful idea.

  11. Hi,
Found you on you tube. I am mesmorized by your creativity and in awe of your creations. So when you announced your blog spot, couldn’t wait to get over here and sign on, and,the give away is a nice added incentive.
These picture matching blocks are great. They will be perfect for my little grand-daughter way out there in Washington state, so far away from me. I’ll put pictures of her auntie’s and grandpa etc. Love it. Thank you so much.

  12. @32poems.com – I had the same problem finding the squares but Micheal’s also carries a whole selection of balsa and basewood (for model planes and such) that can easily be cut down into squares. I bought the 3″x1/4″x16″ (or something close to that) and made 3″ squares.

@Jennifer – For trouble with tackiness the Mod Podge instructions suggest using Clear Acrylic Sealer.

Thanks for the cool idea! I had a blast making this for my friend’s four year old. Also sewed up a little drawstring bag to hold it all!

  13. There is a similar game that you can build yourself on a web site called MatchTheMemory.com. You upload your pictures and choose fonts and colors, and the site does all of the work to create cards with your personalized text and photos.

But it’s not just for printing your custom memory game — anyone can also play the game online. There are cute sound effects, and you can add a specific message that pops up with each match. My young daughter loves to play the games and find the photos of her friends and family members.

  14. This is so cute!!! I am definitely going to make this for my niece and nephew.
    Thanks for sharing.

  15. I finally did find squares for sale online. At first, I could only find them on Etsy. I went to order, and the woman was out! Then, I waited months, searched again, and finally found some.

  16. I love this idea. I have been looking for a fun gift for my daughter and this one is perfect. Thanks for sharing. We will be featuring you on our blog ziggycrafts.blogspot.com 🙂

  2. […] For Christmas this year, Cedar and I were going to make homemade wool felt play food kits for the kids in our family, as holiday gifts. However, we’re not the best sewers. We made some and did okay, but we need more practice before our sewing crafts are gift-ready. Still, since we wanted to make homemade gifts vs. buy toys or something else, we had some brainstorming sessions and settled on homemade recycled chunky crayons and homemade memory games. […]
