mini quilt

haha! You knew I’d be back here with a quilt before too long, didn’t you? Agh, you know me too well.

I had a fire burning under me to get this done…I don’t know why! It was so fun though, and I got to try out three new quilting things:

1. free motion quilting (so fun, but tiring for your arms. aka the squigglies)

2. stacked coin quilt top

3. making my own binding.

Basically I really wanted to try something new and different and it worked, luckily.

The top…the squiggly quilting is so cute. I loved picking the fabric out too, it’s very gender neutral for all our kids to play with. I picture them having a little corner of the playroom with a mini kitchen and this little couch. Maybe with a mini coffee table or kitchen table. And a mini bed. Maybe I’m getting carried away. I love little stuff. They’ll have a whole mini house someday, watch out.

The back, really simple with some leftover strips thrown in there…I used some fabric I had on hand, but I think it turned out fine. I love the binding, how it’s patchy as well. Anyways, it was fun and small (only 44×23, measurements were a little wonky but it fits the couch), so I’m happy.

  12. Ah Jess, you put the rest of us to shame with your uber craftiness! how hard were the squiggles? I love the way that type of quilting looks but have been too scared to try it for my self. The couch and the quilt are both awesome.

  13. Cute! Your kids will never be cold, that’s for sure. hehe. So is the squiggle quilting totally random? or is there some method to it? Looks like a fun thing to try 🙂

  14. The squigglies weren’t that hard, just tiring…it is totally random…anything goes. You need a special free motion quilting thingie, but mine was about $15, so they seem very reasonable. The hardest thing with the stitching was keeping them even, I think. So fun though!

  15. I LOVE it!!

  16. love the squigglies! You’re Amazing!

  17. Hi Jess, I found your update of the mini couch and your mini quilt via OhDeeDoh. They are fantastic! Very inspiring!
Just a quick question – do you think you’d be able to tell me what the brown fabric with circles that you used on your quilt is? I love it but can’t find it anywhere!
    Have a great day!

  18. Hi Caitlin! The brown circle fabric is from Joel Dewberry’s line, I got it from a friend, they do have a similar print, only with orange instead of pink dots here:

    sorry long link! Good luck!

  19. Hi,
I just wanted to tell you how much I love your quilt and the new couch! Awsome! In fact I love it so much I’m thinking of doing a couch for my kids! Do you know approx how much fabric you used for it? I’ve never quilted before but I’m inspired to try one like this, I’m starting small though with a doll quilt for my daughter’s birthday.
    Thanks for the great ideas!

    Jill

  20. Hi Jill! Glad you like the couch, it was so fun to do. I used about 2 1/2 yards of material, and used most of it. Good luck with your first quilt! watch out, it’s addicting!
