the girls’ Christmas dresses

So here are the girls Christmas dresses this year! I’m a little late showing you all, but better late than never! I went with a blue and red theme after consulting with my Instagram pals (my username is craftinessisnotoptional if you want to follow me!), and I love how they turned out! A little classic, a little funky, and a little teeny tiny.

Sadie’s was the classic dress. A simple bodice (which is NOT crooked in real life, just in this picture haha) made with polka dot fabric, with a wide red sash and tulip sleeves. (which I’m working on a tutorial for!)The fabric for this dress is from my sponsor, Ribbon Retreat, Christmas red and white polka dots, and Betty red solid. I think I keep putting in my tulip sleeves backwards, but I like seeing the piping from the front, so whatevs! Isn’t that the point of sewing clothes yourself? So you can do it how you like it? πŸ™‚

Charlotte’s is a bit funky- with the cute reindeer fabric and ruffly sleeves-plus those side ties might be my all time favorite way to dress up a peasant dress! Sorry about the wrinkles though. #keepingitreal I used the Sweet Dress pattern for this one, a 2T size, and lengthened it a bit, and of course, added those sleeves. πŸ™‚

And last but not least, is Ava’s dress-the teeny tiny one! It’s so fun to make dresses this tiny……as long as they’re sleeveless. πŸ˜‰ I drafted the pattern using a store bought dress, and added some faux piping in the hem and also in between the bodice and skirt. It adds a little fun detail to a very basic dress. The fabric for this dress is called Millie’s Closet Main-Floral Boutique Red.

Now how about a pic of the three of them together? They were troopers-taking pics for me on a cold winter morning. (well, cold for California) Miss C loved her “DEER” dress. She seriously freaked when she had to take it off. Sadie too. Ava could have cared less. She’s just along for the ride anyways, being the third child, right?

I can’t believe I have 3 girls! I love it.

p.s. No matter how nicely I do their hair…10 minutes later they look like ragamuffins.

  1. Ohh, I love the little “deer dress” too … I love the ties to pull in a peasant dress like that! Great idea. Girls are just TOO much fun, and yours are just adorable!!

  2. so so so cute πŸ™‚

    like it!! ^^

  3. Your girls are adorable! I love the fabrics you chose, and all the details you incorporated to make them look so darn gorgeous!

  4. The dresses are all gorgeous!! I don’t know which I like best πŸ™‚ Having three girls is so much fun!

  5. Raggamuffins? Yeah, if you say so! Cute…. more like it! Merry Christmas and hope your New Year is productive!

  6. Very pretty! I like seeing the piping in the front, too (I have a new love of piping!) I have 4 girls, but didn’t make them dresses for Christmas. I let Grandma buy them each a dress instead (more clothing gifts = less toys here.) I will save my energy for Easter… better start storing up now! πŸ™‚

  7. Your 3 little girls are so sweet!! Happy New Year!! I wish you all the best!! Silvia x

  8. Your dresses are gorgeous and so are the models!!!! I really like the red polka dot dress!

  9. lol at least you were able to snap on pic of all three of them together before they got all messy.

  10. Gaargh… more than anything else you make me want babies! I love your blog πŸ™‚

  11. love!!! The colors and styles are perfect on each of them. The ties on the deer dress – are they just attached to the front and back (four ties) a few inches away from center and then tied (front to back) at the side seam? I have a cute peasant dress pattern I tested, but it needs something to make it more wearable on a daily basis ;op

  12. They all look adorable, and the fabrics you chose are perfect together!
I especially love your comment about their hair though, because it’s SO TRUE! I take about 20 min. to get it just right, and then she takes 20 seconds to mess it up again. Every time!

  13. My sisters and I were 3 girls in a family and the thing that featured most in our childhood was hand me downs (as I’m sure for a lot of others). The only problem was that by the time my younger sister got the goodies they were worn and frayed and really, not all that attractive anymore. (This was the 90’s after all!)

I don’t think Ava’s going to have that issue at all, everything you make is so beautiful! I almost wish I could be your 4th child so I inherit them next lol! x

  14. i LOVE the deer dress too! i’ve been coveting some of that fabric for ages- maybe i should just order some and make my little miss a dress too!
    so adorable- all of them!

  15. these are adorable jess! i love that deer print!

  16. Oh my gosh, dude. Those dresses are amazing and those little girls are adorable. Well done on both!

  17. Those are just adorable! I love your colors! If I had a deer dress, I’d throw a fit if I had to take it off.

  18. I’m so excited for the tulip sleeves tutorial! Those look like exactly what I’ve been looking for for my daughter’s baptism dress! YAY! And man, are those dresses adorable on your cute little girls!

  19. Oooh, look at the three of them together! They could not be cuter…especially since they’re wearing such darling dresses. You rocked it!

  20. Adorable!! Love your color choices and those girlies of yours are so sweet! Happy New Year!

  21. I love all three dresses, but Sadie’s polka dot dress is to-die-for! I kind of want to make one in that same style for myself…

    Visiting from http://www.lovecityblog.com!

  22. Those dresses are adorable! I’m super impressed. That photo of the three of them together is really sweet too. πŸ™‚

  23. Very cute! I love the patterns, prints and colors.

  24. Love them ALL!!!! I have 3 girls as well but I haven’t sewn matching clothes for them for a couple years (I also have a little boy after them)… but this SO makes me want to. Maybe Easter dresses! Plenty of time for that!

  25. I love these dresses, especially Sadie’s. It would be wonderful if you made a tutorial for those tulip sleeves, I’d love to try them.

  26. The dresses are adorable, but the cutest is the picture of the 3 little girls.
    Love it!

  27. Adorable!!!

  28. I love these dresses! Especially Sadie’s dress though… it’s just beautiful. Love the piping on the tulip sleeves, I would put it in the front too. =)

  29. Such sweet dresses! I adore the red and blue combination.

  30. What sweet dresses and girls! The deer print is so adorable, such a great pick for a Christmas dress!

  32. Oh I love them, and those girls are so cute, too.

And I’m totally right there with you on the hair thing… it seems especially bad if there is any curl to their hair. Welcome to life with three girls. πŸ™‚

  33. I don’t know, Ava’s hair looks pretty neat and tidy πŸ˜‰ I love the dresses! I especially like how Ava’s tied the other two together.

  34. Dude, Jess, I love these. All three! And what cuties they are all together…aaaahhhh sisters. Glad I’m not the only one that can’t keep my kid’s hair neat for more than 2 seconds, too. I feel bad coating her in hairspray for her Christmas programs, but she doesn’t care (AND IT WORKS).

  35. Your dresses are adorable. But your girls definitely steal the show. They are beautiful. My little girl (now 25) some how always kept her hair nice and neat. To this day it is cut so it is easy to wash and go.

  36. I love all three and I think a snowflake pattern would look great on the littleest dress, just as the floral boquet does…

  37. NO PUEDEN SER MÁS BONITAS TUS HIJAS…..
    Feliz 2013!!!!!

  38. All three dresses (and girls) are adorable!

  39. Your girls are three of the most beautiful ragamuffins I have seen. The dresses are sweet too!
From a grandmother of 6 grandSONS, and probably nver gonna have a grandaughter! Enjoy those little ragamuffins!

  40. Love! I want that polka dot dress! Love the sleeves on the peasant dress. You should frame that pic of your girlies!

You may want to see if this is the same way that you did yours.:)

  44. I love the red polka dot dress- it is beautiful! Did you use a pattern for it?

I really liked this post so much. The dresses described and pictured individually was great, but when I got to the picture of the girls in their dresses, it took me by surprise. They are just beautiful (the girls and the dresses). BTW their hair is perfect; when our niece was about 3 or 4, my husband dubbed her his “Little Bag Lady” because of her long blond curls. She’s 30-something now and all of the family knows who he’s talking about.

  46. Love your blog….and your girls are beautiful! I have 4 girls. Girls are amazing!!!! I have a Charlotte too πŸ™‚ They are all big now. But I love these dresses and now that I have a granddaughter I can sew for her and will be making some of these for her. Thank you for the inspiration. Always have fun with your girls, even when they get big.
