chalkboard countdown sign

My family started doing gifts differently a few years ago...instead of getting everyone a gift (which can get crazy when you have 8 kids, 2 parents, 4 spouses, and now 5 grandkids)....we do drawings. A main big gift, and then you can choose whether or not to put your name into the other drawings. Gag gift (one of my faves!), foodie gift, media gift, and my ultimate fave (of course) the handmade gift!

I got my sister Joanna this year and she mentioned something for their house would be nice, so I perused Pinterest and Etsy and found this fun chalkboard countdown idea! I hope her and her hubby enjoy counting down to the fun events in their lives! Such as visiting her awesome sister......??

Anyways! It's super easy to make and here's how I made mine! In words, cause I didn't take pictures...but it's pretty self explanatory!

You'll need:

a piece of wood 1" thick by however long you want. (mine were 17.5" long, and pilfered from my dad's wood shop, sooo they cost me "free thirty free")
chalkboard paint
regular craft paint
vinyl lettering
painter's tape
sponge brushes

So first, paint the whole piece of wood, front back sides, everything, your chosen paint color (not the chalkboard paint). With 2 or more coats. Let dry well, and then on whichever side you choose to be the front, measure 1/4" from each edge and make a small pencil mark just inside that measurement, at the middle of the long sides, and near each short end. Also along the short ends, of course. (so that you will paint over the mark) Then place your painter's tape just outside the pencil marks, and press firmly on all sides. Paint within the tape with the chalkboard paint according to the directions. Let it dry and cure the full amount of time! Don't forget to prepare the chalkboard it by lightly rubbing it with the side of a piece of chalk, then wipe clean, before you write on it. Then add your vinyl lettering and you're done! I cut mine out on my Silhouette and it took hardly any time!

It's such a simple and easy gift but so fun to make, that I whipped up another one for my mom at the same time, since she commented that it was a great gift idea when I told her about it!

The cost is really minimal as well! The wood was free for me, but a piece of wood probably wouldn't cost much at the hardware store, especially if you made a few at a time for gifts, or for a craft night. The chalkboard paint I also got for free as a swag bag I got awhile back from Michaels stores, and the vinyl and white paint I had on hand. Sweet!

I grabbed some random wood pieces from my dad's wood scrap bin, sanded them lightly, and glued some felt around it for a quick little eraser, and added a few pieces of chalk tied with some satin ribbon to the gift box.

Both my sister and mom loved them! Next up: one for me....

Merry Christmas.....card idea!

(our Christmas card this year, from Shutterfly)

Just wanted to pop in before the holidays and wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy New Year! Also to share a fun idea for your Christmas cards, make sure you hang on to them this year....

I saw this idea awhile back of punching holes in the Christmas cards you get in the mail, then clipping them together with some metal rings. It makes a really fun little booklet to look through in the future! We plan to bring them out every year in this fun little sleigh, for us and the kids to look through.  It's a great way to save all those gorgeous Christmas cards! I can't wait to make our book of cards for this year!

Have a safe and happy holiday!

"mistletoes" nail polish gift idea

If you're looking for a fun last minute gift idea for your girlfriends, sisters, moms, etc...try this idea! (almost everyone likes nail polish, right?) I bought a variety of nice nail polish colors then made these tags and tied them on. I of course let them choose which one they wanted...well, until there was only one left and then she was stuck with the pale pink...sorry Megan, hope you liked it!

Tada! Done and done. It's a fun little gift to let the gals in your life know you're thinking about them in the holiday season!

last minute skirt

The other day I just needed a quick easy project that could be finished up asap. Have you guys been feeling the holiday crunch too? Time is running out! So instead of tackling my to do list, I did the immature thing and ignored it to make this little skirt. (I do that a lot...tell me I'm not alone!)

I used this adorable fabric from my sponsor Southern Fabric, and trimmed the bottom in some teal bias tape. I imagined it with pockets trimmed in the same bias tape, but alas, I only had a half yard, so they got scrapped. Maybe I will have to get myself a fat quarter and add them....I really had my heart set on those pockets.

It's for the Sadester for Christmas...I figured I might as well wrap it up for a gift...though now I have to make one for Charlotte I guess, to even out the gift ratios. Oh well, it's not like skirts are hard to make, right?

What are you working on last-minute?

Christmas cookie box (and recipes!)

I spent last week baking my little heart out. I love baking. Not the dishes so much, but they don't go away no matter how hard I try to ignore them, so I guess they come with the territory. It's so relaxing for me, and luckily the girls love to "help". Until they get bored and go make messes and change clothes a million times per day. (Sadie, at least)

I made a few different varieties of cookies, packaged them up and passed these treat boxes out to family and friends, and they were a hit, I heard! One family even called me a (and I quote) "freaking homemaking wizard". I'm actually thinking of having a name plate for my desk made that says just that:
Jessica Christian
"Freaking Homemaking Wizard"

It's one of the best compliments I've ever received. No kidding. ;)

These adorable treat boxes are from Martha Stewart's line. They sent me some to try out, and they were fantastic! They make it so easy to put together a gorgeous treat assortment, and to make you look like a "homemaking wizard".  I just love the scalloped edges! Who doesn't love a good scallop? (and no I didn't really give the Griswolds those goodies. They probably would have destroyed them in about 2 seconds anyways.)

I'll share the recipes below for what I made! They all turned out delicious.

I should know, I sampled them all.... a lot. ;)

Sugar cookies...of course! I love decorating sugar cookies so these had to make an appearance in my box! The recipe is below for the cookies, and I'm planning a post soon with more tips on royal icing so look for that...sometime. :D

Sugar Cookies
 adapted from Annie's Eats

Ingredients:
 2 cups butter, softened
 2 cups powdered sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 ½ t. almond extract
2 t. vanilla
1 ½ t. salt
5 c. sifted flour
Directions:
Cream butter. Add powdered sugar. Mix well. Blend in egg, almond extract, vanilla, salt and flour. Roll to ¼” thickness in between sheets of parchment paper (sprinkle flour on both sides of the dough and paper), then chill dough in fridge until firm. Cut with cookie cutters and place on greased cookie sheets. Repeat with remainder of dough, but keep in mind each time you roll it out they get tougher from adding flour while rolling. Bake at 375° for 8-10 min. Make sure they are not sitting on the counter very long before putting them in the oven, you want them to go in chilled. Cookies should not brown. Let cool for a few minutes on the tray then transfer to a cooling rack.  I usually bake them a day before I decorate. Makes about 40-50 cookies, depending on the size of your cutter design.

Now onto the other cookies!

These cookies were so, so delish! I loved the texture of the pistachios and cranberries, and the colors were perfect for a Christmas cookie box! So easy to make, too.

Cranberry-Pistachio Cookies
 source: Betty Crocker

Ingredients:
1 (1 lb 1.5 ounce) pouch Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix
1 box (4 serving size) pistachio instant pudding and pie filling mix
1/4 cup flour
1/2 cup butter, melted
2 eggs
1 cup dry roasted salted pistachio nuts, chopped
1/2 cup dried cranberries
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixer add cookie mix, pudding mix, and flour. Add melted butter and eggs and mix until incorporated. Add pistachios and cranberries and mix well.
Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto a parchment lined cookie sheet and slightly flatten with your palm.
Bake for 8-10 minutes-make sure not to over bake, letting them sit on the counter for a few minutes helps them "set". They were a bit wobbly when I got them out at 8 minutes (my oven is a bit hot), so I let them stay in for another 2-3, and they were just right. After they've set up on the pan, transfer and let them cool completely on a wire rack. Store in an airtight container. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.

These are a classic Christmas treat for our family. Rory LOVES peanut butter and chocolate so these are the cookies he requests most often around the holidays.

 Peanut Butter Kiss Cookies
Ingredients:
2 2/3 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter
2/3 cup creamy peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Additional sugar (about 1/3 cup, in a shallow bowl)
5 dozen kisses, unwrapped

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In your mixer, mix flour, salt, and baking soda. Add butter and peanut butter then mix until smooth. Add brown and white sugars and beat until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla and mix until smooth. Make balls of dough equaling about a tablespoon. Roll in sugar. (Sadie loved helping with this part!) Bake 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet for 8 minutes. Remove from oven and add 1 kiss to the center of each cookie. Return to the oven and bake for 2 more minutes. Cool and enjoy!

Cookies and Cream Fudge
adapted from Chef in Training

1 cup sugar
3/4 cup butter
1 (5 oz.) can evaporated milk
2 (12 oz.) packages white chocolate morsels
1 (7 oz.) jar marshmallow cream
3 cups coarsely chopped Oreos (about 25 cookies)
 divided pinch of salt

Line a 9x13″ square pan with aluminum foil, grease the inside lightly; set aside. Combine first 3 ingredients in a medium saucepan, then cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil; cook 3 minutes, keep on stirring!  Remove from heat and add the white chocolate morsels, marshmallow cream, 2 cups crushed cookies, and salt.  Stir until everything melts together. Pour fudge into the 9x13" pan, then sprinkle remaining 1 cup of crushed cookies over the top of the fudge, gently pressing cookies into fudge.  Cover and chill in fridge until firm. Lift fudge in aluminum foil from pan; remove foil and cut fudge into squares. Eat!

These cookies you don't even really need a recipe for, they are so easy! But really quick to make and festive! Sadie loved helping me sprinkle on the broken candy canes! (and then she stealthily stole the leftover candy canes off the tree and ate them in her closet. I kid you not)

White Chocolate Dipped Peppermint Cookies

Ingredients:

Mint Chocolate cookies (aka grasshopper cookies from the Keebler brand)
white chocolate or almond bark
candy canes, crushed

Melt chocolate bark and dip each cookie in, lifting it out with a fork and gently tapping to get rid of the extra chocolate, then slide it off the fork onto wax paper. Sprinkle with crushed candy canes right away! Almond bark sets up fast if you're using that. Let cool and harden. Done!

quick iphone case and some headbands

I wanted to make something to thank my friend Rachelle for the pictures she took of Ava, so I sewed up a fun case for her phone-I'm pretty sure she likes mustard yellow so hopefully it's a hit. (who doesn't like mustard yellow, right? if you don't...you are dead to me. just kidding. or am I...)

I used this great tutorial and pattern and whipped a couple up (since I was making one already, why not make two?). They took hardly any time, and it would be a great gift or stocking stuffer! I'm sure you could alter the pattern to work for other smart phones as well.  I made mine out of pleather since it's what I had on hand, and it worked great.

I also made some quick and easy newborn headbands that she can hopefully use during her sessions. (speaking of which, she's running a fab sale right now if you're local!)

The white and blue felt flowers are made with this tutorial, and the others are simply layered felt flowers cut out with my Go Baby die cutter (the Rose of Sharon die). I did an ombre look with the pink and yellow-and love how it turned out!

bentos week five

I haven't forgotten about these bento posts-they've just slowed down a bit since having Ava. I still make them-they are just kind of the same most days. These are from before I had her aka when I had more time on my hands. ;)

So here's a fun animal-themed bento! The girls love them and they're fun to make (especially with the matching picks lol) This one had a PB&J with a cheese ham and fruit leather (sleepy-raising-the-roof, apparently) bunny on top! I made it with this really fun and versatile cutter...thanks to the nice folks at allthingsforsale.com for sending it to me! It also has some kiwi, strawberries, and cut up string cheese. yum!

A fun springtime bento just in time for....fall. Eh.

It has some grapes, yogurt raisins, tiny cut up carrots (calling them baby carrots convinced them to eat 'em!) strawberries, crackers, flower cheese and squiggly turkey and ham strips. Also some springy picks for fun!

This bento had some peaches, yogurt raisins, and grapes in the top, then some turkey and cheese "sushi" bites (lol yes I'm a dork) and crackers. Sadie ate every morsel of this one!

This bento was thrown together in about 5 minutes, no kidding. The girls threw a fit one day when I didn't prepare a bento and didn't eat much of their lunch I made them. I am not one to normally cater to my kids, don't get me wrong, but this poor preggo just wanted a peaceful lunch on this Sunday, so I whipped up this simple bento right before leaving for church. They ate every bit...the magic of bentos! Some PB & Honey sandwich skewers, cut up string cheese, sun chips, and grapes and kiwi were a hit!

Another quite simple bento that they both love. A ham and cheese bagel sandwich, yogurt raisins, and cut up grapes and pears. tada!

Sadie's book dress

I got the right color of thread! woohoo! Hey, that was quite the feat for a gal 2 days from her due date. Hitting up the fabric store with two slightly rambunctious young girls is a feat worth receiving a medal for. Am I right? (I am)

Anyways-this being the third time I've sewn up this pattern (yes I'm slightly obsessed with it!), it came together really quickly! I almost didn't need the instructions. (just in a few parts to refresh my memory)

The best part is that Sadie loves it. I'm getting better at letting her choose the fabric she wants....from a careful selection already chosen by yours truly. (what? I'm only human) She calls this her book dress-don't you love all the cute book spines on this fabric? The colors are amazing too. The fabric is called Books by David Textiles.

Lil' Miss Attitude!

I'm getting better at the back. Finally.

newborn session with Rachelle Lee photography

My uber talented friend Rachelle from Rachelle Lee Photography did a newborn session the other week with Ava, and wow! I just can't get over how gorgeous these photos are! Rachelle has a knack for capturing the moment, right? Also the sparkle in her eye! It was the perfect photography session, relaxed and calm. She schedules plenty of time for changing, feeding, and rocking baby to sleep. I loved every minute of it, and Ava did great! Plus it's always fun to see how the pros do it! The second one down is my favorite. Ok, they all are....

If you're local, you can contact her to schedule a session via her site!

I Sew Lucky handmade doll review

Guys, I love handmade stuff. That's no secret, right? Especially when I don't have to make it myself! And when it's well-made and beautiful...well that's just the bestest. (it's a word)

So I was ecstatic when I was lucky (pun intended) to receive this gorgeous handmade dolly from April at I Sew Lucky!

I picked it out with baby Ava in mind as the recipient...after all every girl needs her own handmade doll, and Sadie and Charlotte already have their own. They both tried very hard to nab this one for their handmade softie stashes, but mama bear protected it for little Ava. (aka stuck it on top of the dresser behind some stuff so they couldn't see it and then forgot about it)

Anyways. Back to what I was saying about it being well made-it's just lovely! Perfect sewing, and I loved the cute hairline and those little buns! Eek so cute. She hand paints all the faces on her dolls too. Which is perfect also. (good because I am pretty sure I would wreck one if I tried to paint their face on. Either that or they'd always look surprised or puzzled or something) It's my favorite feature of the doll-those cutie pie little lips and eyelashes! Loved her fabric choices too.

Do you have a little gal in need of a handmade dolly? Then you're in luck!

Use the code BLOG15 to receive 15% off your purchase from I Sew Lucky! She also makes the cutest owls and foxes! Plus lots of other dollies-with lots of hair and skin colors!

I love pink and green together! the little heart is adorable.

A fox. That is a bookend also. Brilliant! And adorable.

I love this gal's hair! And so trendy with the orange and navy blue!
