KCWC: coral elephant dress and a wrap up

Here it is…my last project for the Kids Clothes Week Challenge. I had so much fun this go-around, got so many basis etc made for the girls…but I think it wiped me out. A little break from sewing is in order. (but not too long!)

So I started making this elephant print dress with the intention that it would be for Sadie. I ended up making a bad call and chopped some of the bodice to make it smaller (late night+pregnant brain=bad decisions being made lol) but luckily my house is full of girls (soon to be one more!) so at least Miss C could wear it! 🙂 Sadie wasn’t too broken up about it, luckily. I may have to make her a different colored elephant one though…she was kind of in love with it…though I have enough leftover for a skirt though and that seemed to pacify her.

I knew that I wanted to keep it simple and let the print shine, so I used light pink piping to accentuate the tulip sleeves and waist. Also a little sweatheart-esque neckline. Then some simple pleats in front and back of the skirt….not very even (at all) but whatevs!

The fabric is from my fab sponsor Fabricworm, from the Mod Basics organic line (I bought it for the nursery but didn’t end up using it)

I LOVE how the tulip sleeves came out! I plan to make these again very soon so hopefully I can get a tutorial together when I do. The piping makes them pop! (even if they are a little big…hence the need to make them again and work on the drafting part!) It buttons up the back bodice but of course I forgot to get a shot of that. Oh well you know what buttons look like right?

It’s funny how Sadie got all the shirts and Charlotte got all the dresses this week. It’s not like she needed them either…really Sadie did. Oh well!

Just for fun I put everything I sewed this week into a collage….it’s amazing what can get done in a week if you put your mind to it!

  7. Waw, what a fruitful KCWC you had! I managed to make no more than 2 things (both from the same pattern – pathetic!). I love the tulip sleeves and piping…

  8. I can barely see the beautiful dress because of those darling chubby cheeks! You’re killing me with cuteness over here.

  9. You amaze me Jess, how you sew around your belly is beyond me. Everything turned out fabulous. Of course I’m not sure what is cuter your clothes or those girls of yours. Are you ready for another one?

  10. Oh gosh, I love the coral elephant print and the tulip sleeves are perfect! So glad you have a house full of girls in case there are accidents! In my case, I’d have to get out the seam ripper and modify things. (Or gift it!) the last of my children is 6 and the others are 24,22, and 18!

  23. Jess,
I think that this dress is simply wonderful!
When I saw the elephant print pop up in the various webshops, I thought it a bit “bleh”. But how wrong I was! With the right pattern and a bit of bias band, you really made this one shine! You have a knack for this, for sure 🙂
The tulip sleeves are darling and the pleats so much more sophisticated than the good ole gathering.

  24. Hi Jess,
Just to let you know that I’ve featured this dress for it’s tulip sleeves in my latest blogpost (https://dobbinsbobbins.wordpress.com/2015/05/21/throwback-thursday-tulip-sleeves/). I could spend hours trawling through the archives of your blog- everything is just so beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂
