Vintage notions

ย I love using vintage sewing supplies. Notions, patterns, buttons, zippers…Oops forgot to take pictures of my zippers.

I love vintage trims because they are so unique compared to most trims these days. I mean you can buy reproductions and such, but I love stumbling upon a gorgeous trim at a garage sale or thrift store. (a lot of these in the picture were gifted to me also…I guess my friends know what I like! lol)

You can also find them on Etsy for decent prices-though you may have to search through a lot of listings to find what you want.

ย BUTTONS! Who doesn’t love a cute button, especially if you like to sew? They can add the perfect touch to an outfit or hairpiece, and I’ve even used them to make rings-so easy! I actually don’t have a huge button collection (wish it was bigger) but every now and then I’ll buy a big lot on Etsy and see what I get!

Patterns. Love me a good vintage pattern, I’ll admit sometimes mainly for the gorgeous artwork on the front, am I right? When and why did they do away with that? I bought the one on the bottom left and top right specifically for framing the cover and hanging on the walls of my sewing room. Guess I should hop on that sometime. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย
One thing: make sure if you really plan on using the pattern to sew with, that it includes all the pieces. Also in the vintage days (lol), the patterns only come in one size most of the time. So make sure it’s the size you want. Unless you’re planning on framing the art! I’ve also seen people wrap up handmade gifts with vintage patterns-so creative and cute!

One more creative use for another vintage notion: thread. Kristin sent me a link to this awesome project that creatively uses up any vintage thread you might have stumbled across. (it’s not good to actually sew seams with though!)

ย Or you could just store them in a big glass jar for some fun sewing room decor like Rachel did! Next time I come across a bunch of vintage spools, I’m doing this! I say next time like I ever have…lol.

Are you excited for our first guest post next Monday? I am! Come back tomorrow for a fabulous fabric giveaway! It’s big, people!

  1. who doesn’t like the vintage? What I love the most is to go to some fairs (specially second-handed fairs, we have a lot of them back here) and buy my buttons!Do you know what I also love to buy there? Stamps ๐Ÿ˜€ Old stamps are amazing, with so different designs!

Have a nice day, I love the trims you put here too!

  2. OMG I love that Simplicity 4959.
If you only use it for the envelop pic…….well let me say it in another way…..don’t put the pattern paper in the bin as I would love to sew that dress ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. I LOVE vintage, I’ve just opened an etsy shop so I can sell the bunting I make from vintage fabric ๐Ÿ™‚
Unfortunately the ribbon I’m using at the moment is new but I would love to make them 100% vintage.
I’ve had a look around charity shops but haven’t seen any pretty ribbon, I didn’t think to look on etsy so thanks for the tip ๐Ÿ™‚

My shop if anyone is interested is:

  4. thanks so much for featuring my photo ๐Ÿ™‚
loving all the vintage eye candy of your vintage ribbon & sewing patterns collections, I hope to share some of my vintage sewing patterns in a blog post soon…

  5. I adore vintage trims. So beautiful. Love that photo. I’m going to pin it if that is ok.

  6. My favorite vintage notion is vintage bias tape. Back in the day, bias tape used to be 100% cotton, and it used to come in a really drool-worthy range of colors. Yeah, I can make my own bias trim, but I also use a lot of the vintage stuff (which can be got cheap in Ebay lots). It’s just so purty!

  7. That’s it, I’m gonna have to frame some patterns now.

  8. These pictures make me dream of wonderful new projects…Thanks for sharing!

  9. Hi! New Follower here! I love your little girl dresses – now I just have to learn how to sew button holes… and zippers… ๐Ÿ™‚
