Olay Total Effects review and $50 Visa gift card giveaway!

So I know I’m not that old — 27 to be exact. Still, I’ve been wanting to start some kind of anti-aging routine or product, kind of a pre-emptive defense of my skin, so to speak. I have semi-decent skin, with some breakouts on my nose — definitely combo skin. My T-zone can get oily sometimes. Wow, I bet you wish you didn’t know that. No going back now, sorry!
So when BlogHer and Olay contacted me to review their Total Effects Tone Correcting UV Moisturizer I was really excited to try it out! Some of the benefits of this product are:
Minimizes the look of spots instantly.
Helps with the appearance of discoloration.
Fights the seven signs of aging.
I received the fair to light color, and I’ve been using it for about two weeks. I’m definitely noticing a difference! It helps even out my skin tone, and using just the moisturizer plus some concealer doesn’t look half bad! I still use powder foundation on top of that, but I did notice I didn’t have to use as much. Which is great. Using less product = more money in my pocket!
I used about a dime-sized squirt each time and it was plenty to cover my face. I also found that blending it on my finger before applying helped it go on much smoother. See how there are two parts swirling together in the tube? I’m guessing (I’m no make-up expert) that the white stuff is the anti-aging part and the tan is the coverage part. So mixing them up after you squirt it out seems to work well for me.ย
I have also noticed that my make-up stays looking better, longer throughout the day, and my eyeshadow doesn’t crease as much. So for me it’s doubling as make-up primer. Another sweet bonus! My skin feels smoother too.
So far, I’m loving it! At first, honestly, I wasn’t sure I would like it (the first time I used it my skin felt sticky for a little while). But I think my skin just had to get used to it. Now that it’s learned to behave itself, I think I’ll keep this pretty tube around for a while.

Do you have a skin-care routine? What are some of the ways you make time to take care of your skin?ย

  1. I just got some of this to try. I like their other products. My skin is older so hoping this helps!

  2. Moisturize, moisturize & moisturize again. Best secret I’ve found. Thanks for the giveaway.

  4. I just recently started using the Clarisonic and I love it! I have noticed a difference after a few weeks. I also am huge on moisturizing!

  5. I am not good about taking care of my skin! I want to try this (if I can remember by the time I get to the store!)

  6. this looks great. i’ve been thinking about switching to a tinted moisturizer, but maybe i’ll try this one out instead ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. You’re good to be starting young with skin care.

  8. Hi!

I’m 25 and haven’t started any sort of anti-aging routine, but I do take pretty good care of my skin. For me, exfoliation and moisture are key. Every evening I gently exfoliate my skin, and I put a nice face lotion on at least twice per day.

  9. I really need help with my skin, I’m preggo with my third child, and my skin is going very crazy and I feel like I’ve tried everything! Maybe this product would help ๐Ÿ™‚
    Thanks for the chance!

  10. I would love to try this… I’m not getting any younger!

  11. I’ve been an Oil of Olay girl for years! Love it!

  12. I am so bad… I’ve never got into a routine… Maybe this would be a good way to start… Baby steps…

  13. I been thinking about changing my routine because I’m getting old-ish… Thanks for the review… I think that I’ll pick-up a bottle!

  14. I started using Olay night time face lotion at 19. I decided that taking care of my skin early will benefit me later in life. Every few days I use Stridex to keep my skin clear and anti aging lotion.

  15. I love Olay products–I use the soap to wash my face instead of a traditional face wash and then the sensitive skin moisturizer (the cream in the pot, not the oil-based lotion) each morning. My mother, grandmother, and even great-grandmother use(d) Oil of Olay every day–no lie! And, I have to say that even at 91, my great-grandmother’s skin was beautiful. So, we’re firm believers in their products in our family!

  16. I don’t necessarily have a skin care routine. I remove my eye make up and then cleanse with whatever cleanser I felt like I needed the last time I was shopping. Then I use my Oil of Olay moisturizer with sunscreen. I’ve used moisturizer with sunscreen since I was a teenager. I’ll be 35 this month and have started to really notice that my skin is looking old and blotchy. ๐Ÿ™

  17. I’m not great at taking care of my skin, but I do keep face wash in the shower so worst case I at least wash my face once a day.

  18. Nothing fancy here. I get to take care of my skin before the kids wake up and after they go to bed!

  19. I’m also 27 and I have shamefully few skincare tips. If I remember to wash the makeup off my face before bed, I consider that pretty good. I do think that jojoba oil makes a great and natural makeup remover, though.

  20. I just moisturize and clean! I also use a small amount of baking soda mixed with water as an exoliator.

  21. I have super dry skin. My daily skin care secret is aloe vera a couple times a day, or at least morning and night. It’s super light, natural, cheap and I have been using it for over 10 years. It’s always my base and then I put on a moisturizer or a tinted moisturizer with SPF. The aloe vera definitely helps seal in moisture.

I even wash my face with olive oil once or twice a week, sounds crazy I know, but it works!

  22. Whenever I know I’ll be outside, I wear a moisturizer with extra sunscreen in it. I’m only 26, but I am still conscious of the effect the sun can have on aging.

  23. Whenever I know I’ll be outside, I wear a moisturizer with extra sunscreen in it. I’m only 26, but I am still conscious of the effect the sun can have on aging.

  24. I use fresh aloe vera (straight from the plant) and lotion after washing my face every night. Not a single pimple, and my dark spots have lightened considerably. LOVE IT.

  25. I use moisturizer with sunscreen every day, it’s easy and I know it helps.

  26. I am so lazy. All I do is wash my face in the shower. I don’t have a ton of problems with breakouts, but I do get my share of enlarged pores and blackheads and, well, I’m a squeezer. Consequently, my face is suffering. I really need to establish a good routine…

  27. I don’t really have a skin care plan but I should start. I have dry to normal skins so I am lucky but it’s not perfect this sounds like an awesome product.

  28. I use moisturizer (and if it’s not tinted, then some concealer around my eyes). Then powder. All set! I do like moisturizing/tinted options though.

I have never tried a tinted moisturizer but would like to. It’s hard to find shades light enough for my very fair skin.
I exfoliate at least once a week, moisturize morning and night, and wear sunscreen every day.

  30. I only use moisturizer but I would like to try tinted moisturizer. Thanks!

  31. I moisturize my skin at night before bed, when I have the most time.

    mami2jcn at gmail dot com

  32. I believe simplicity is best. I use Cetaphil cleanser every day, which is very gentle of skin. Aveeno moisturizer with sunscreen. I also occasionally use a St. Ives facial scrub to slough off dead skin. That’s it! Nothing fancy, but it works. Thanks for the great giveaway. My fingers are crossed that I’m the winner!

  33. I have been using a heavy moisturizer at night, and a moisturizer with sun block during the day.

  34. I have been wanting to try this, My regimen is sunscreen, hat, and dove soap. Healthy genes! but now I am getting to 50, I want to look nice and feel nice too. thank you

  35. I moisturize morning and evening, cleansing both. Unless I’m exhausted and drop into bed in my makeup. (Shhhh – it’s my little secret).

  36. I don’t have a routine, I don’t wear makeup or anything. But I have noticed my face aging, this seems easy enough! ๐Ÿ™‚

  37. I don’t do much of anything, although I am trying to get better about wearing moisturizer and washing my face before bed!

  38. I LOVE MAC’s green gel cleanser, and then the face primer!! It has made such a difference on my skin ๐Ÿ™‚ ALso, I live by concealer. I look 1/2 asleep without it…..I mean I am, I have 2 small children, but I dont want to LOOK it!!!

  39. i wear SPF everyday

    [email protected]

  40. I mostly focus on sun protection – I use UV protection every day!

    urchiken at gmail dot com

  41. I am awful and my skin is starting to show it. I used to use spf moisturizer daily, when I wore makeup, but now I never think about it. I just got some covergirl tinted moisturizer that seems ok and has spf, hopefully that will be enough this summer!

  42. I wash y face regularly and use a moisturizer with sunscreen most days.

  43. With every child I have my face always turns on me postpartum. My hormones are always in a rage leaving breakout after breakout. I used Proactiv after my first pregnancy and it worked amazingly. Now I’m 3 months post 2nd baby and it’s happening again! I just started treatments again, so here’s hoping for a pimple free face again!

  44. I need to take better care of my skin! Hopefully you and this giveaway will inspire me to try harder…

  45. I use tinted moisturizer with spf and I really like it. I have been thinking about an antiaging routine and this may just be the thing for me!

  46. i wash my face twice a day and exfoliate once a week

    vanitizebaby at yahoo dot com

  47. I use the oil cleansing method of cleaning my skin and I love it! It’s never felt so soft and radiant!

  48. I was may face and use sunscreen every day. Not the best, but it works.

  49. I get moisturizer on after a shower but that is about it. This could be really useful

  50. Great review! I totally want to try this sometime. I use sunscreen. ๐Ÿ™‚ emmillee(AT)Gmail(dot)com

  51. I actually use a product called Avene. It is French, and it’s pretty pricey, but it goes so far that I actually end up saving money by using it. The gel cleanser has worked amazingly on my face. Before my makeup, I use the Avene Toning + Lotion, and at night, I use the Yes To Cucumbers face wipes. Since getting into this routine, I RARELY have breakouts, and my skin feels so soft and smooth! It’s really been amazing!

  52. I have some lovely combination skin, and this sounds like a great product.
And I love products that double as a primer for the rest of my makeup.

  53. I use face scrub and moisturizer. I have super dry skin.

  54. I’m 27 as well, and I have been using Hope in a Jar for moisturizer and exfoliating my face once a week. For anti-aging I used some Avon products but ran out. I’m glad you posted this because I was unaware of this product. Thanks!

  55. I’m really lazy about my skin, and I shouldn’t be (wrinklessss!). I use the Clarisonic buzzy brush thing, some toner I found on my counter that my sister got for me, and moisturizer. :} Thanks for the chance to win!

  56. Every time I start a routine, I am not good about sticking with it. Also, when I start, my face breaks out from not being used to it so I usually give up. I did, however, buy some new cleanser at the store today so we will see how it goes! ๐Ÿ™‚

  57. Cleanse and moisturize and sun protection. That is it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  58. I just make sure to wash and then use a good moisterizer every day.

  59. I love Olay products and even though I am 37 I have been using eye cream forever. Something my mom got me started on early. I use Olay daily moisturizer with 15 spf every day too and have for years. I really hate the chore of taking off my makeup at night and washing my face but I do it anyway.
thanks for the chance to win!

  60. I forget alot of times-but I really need to establish a better routine!

  61. I clean my face and then put on moisturizer. Plus I make sure to wear lotion with an SPF everyday!

  62. I use a moisturizer with SPF 15 everyday!
    aesprouse at gmail dot com

  63. I REALLY need to establish a skin-care routine! I would love to try this product since I just started having acne in my late 20’s!

  64. My skin care routine is just washing every night/morning with water and a towel, haha. ๐Ÿ™‚

  65. I’ve been trying plain hot water finished by a light application of coconut oil. It’s not been a cure-all for my skin, but I’ve not noticed any major difference from the dozens of products I’ve tried. I don’t find the coconut oil to be the greatest moisturizer for my skin though. And I’m definitely a minimalist when it comes to makeup – this sounds right up my alley.

    SewAbundantly(at)ymail[.]com

  66. I keep my facial soap in the shower so I can wash my face & remove any makeup while showering. This saves time.

Wish i was 27!! LOL But I have always taken care of my skin and receive compliments on my complexion. My secret? Never go to bed without cleansing and moisturizing and never go out during the day without a moisterizer w/ sunblock. Oh, and drink lots of water! Connie in California

  68. looks like a great product! i make sure i use a moisturizer every morning with a sunscreen in it. in the evening i always cleanse my face and moisturize again! can’t go to bed with makeup still on. thanks for sharing!

  69. I keep moisturizer on my desk (Olay) and any time I get bored I just put some on. my boring work makes for smooth skin.

  70. My skin care routine is kind of in flux right now. I used to have this stuff I loved, but they stopped making it (hate that!), so I’m in the market for something new. Maybe I’ll give this stuff a try!

  71. I put lotion on, but that is about it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I started using Purpose (by J & J)facial soap and lotion when I was in college and it cleared up my acne immediately. I have used the product twice a day for the past 18 years and havn’t had any acne problems since besides the monthly zit (just one). The lotion also has a spf of probably 15. I have never used a tinted lotion so I am interested in trying something new, as long as it works just as well.

  73. Would love to win and give this a try!

  74. And I tweeted about it, too! @Jennyroo1

  75. I’m in the same boat as you… Not old but no teenager either. I suppose I should think about anti-aging products and this was a good review! One thing I have always done in my routine is use witch hazel as a toner, cheap and natural!

  76. Love Olay products! Using SPF15 is the best idea every day!
    Evin5 at aol dot com

  77. Love this! Thank you for the opportunity!!

  78. My facial routine is simple. Every night before bed, I wash my face using a natural, scrub then use a night cream. In the mornings I wash my face using the same scrub and then put on a UV 30 mosturizer.

  79. thanks for the giveaway

  80. I tweeted about the giveaway at marialeads

  81. I’m always trying new products because, to be honest, not much works for me. I had pretty good luck with acne in high school but it came with a vengeance in my 20’s! Throw that on top of dry skin that can’t seem to be moisturized enough and I just can’t win.

  82. Looks fun to try!

  83. I don’t have as much of a routine as I should. I wash every day with all natural handmade soap. Once in a while I use Reef Botanicals Almond Pastry facial scrub and once in a longer while I use Reef Botanicals Dead Sea Mud Mask. That’s it.

  84. I use sunscreen everyday – rain or shine.

  85. Sunscreen, moisturizer, cleanse w/ whatever and sometimes coconut oil cleansing!
Also a huge fan of my clarisonic face brush….when I remember to use it!

  86. pick mee!

  87. Sunscreen!

  88. i have been trying out the mary kay stuff, as i need something for spots (i lived in central america several years and wasn’t careful… ). this seems like it might combine several of the products i’m using now though… worth a look!

  89. I use moisturizer every night before I go to bed. And I like to use 2-in-1 skin care products to save some time.

  90. I wash my face in the morning with facial cleanser, then use SPF lotion to moisturize my face, and then at night I do the same ,

  91. I use sun block, wash my face with water and apply natural shea butter and its in great shape!

  92. Taryn Fink says

I’ve been using Cetaphil daily face wash for years now, after my dermatologist recommended it. It is wonderful at removing makeup and oils, but very gentle on your skin. I’m also very fair skinned, so I use a moisturizer containing sunscreen daily (regardless of the season).

  93. I recently got myself some aveeno facial wash on clearance, but most of the time I just use water. I made some crocheted facial cleansing pads and they are nice to wipe up in the morning and before bed. If I fall asleep from pure exhaustion before I clean my face, I definitely suffer the effects for at least a week with blemishes.

    Thanks for a great giveaway!

  94. I wash and moisturize (with SPF during the day)… I like to keep it simple and it seems to work for me!

  95. i’ve become lazy w/ my routine having 3 littles running around. but i’m looking to start up again and this looks like a great option. thanks for the review!

  96. Being 32, I should probably start a routine! I do moisturize every day, though!

  97. I wash my face every morning and night with a face wash. I would say 3-4 times a week I wash with a light exfoliating wash . Love how smooth it makes my face.

I used to do soooo much better with washing, toning, moisturizing. Budget and kids have depleted my skin care budget ๐Ÿ™‚ Oh well… they are worth it ๐Ÿ˜‰

My grandma who passed away two years ago taught me my skin care routine…
    1. Don’t touch your face all day
    2. Wash when oily
    3. Use Oil of Olay
She used to have the tiny little bottles and the big ones too that used to be glass. I still have one of them (empty of course), so happy to find it! Good memories of grammy and lotion. I still use it.
This looks like a treat lotion! FUN!

  130. I use a very mild facial bar soap in the shower, and then Olay Complete for oily skin on my face and neck when I’m out. In the winter months or when my skin feels tight, I use a heavier moisturizer.

I don’t usually use foundation unless I’m going to a wedding or something special. My skin is pretty decent, but hey, at 39, it can ALWAYS use help!

  131. My skin care routine doesn’t involve foundation except for extra special occasions. I use a moisturizer that has double or triple benefits like SPF or tint.

  133. While in shower in the mornings, I would wash my face with Aveeno’s clenser, and use my Oil of Olay moisturizer/sunscreen under my makeup (I give it time to absorb). 134. One thing I do to save time is apply a mask 2 or 3 times a week first thing in the morning. Then it has time to work and dry while I make coffee, get clothes ready, etc. By the time I take my shower, I just wash it off in the shower and my skin feels so soft!

  149. I do a good deep cleanse and moisturizer before bed to save time in the morning. But I also use a few two in one products to cut a little time off my routine too!

  156. I have a pretty simple routine! I wash my face with Neutrogena Deep Clean Daily Cleanser every night (or when I remember!). I usually don’t moisturize at night, I use a tinted moisturizer (Covergirl CG Smoothers Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15) when I do my makeup so I don’t have to use heavy foundation.

  164. I love the feel of a good moisturizer but I have to be very careful because I’m allergic to so many products. I’ve been using Cetaphil and it has been working very well for me but I like the sound of this Olay product so I may just give in and try it.
