faux undershirt tops-a mini tute

Β The Scrapbox giveaway ends tonight! Make sure to get your entry in!

I picked up some knit tops at the thrift store last week to remake into tops for the girls. They unfortunately were short sleeved, and didn’t have enough fabric to cut long sleeves out of.

Soo….cue the fake, excuse me….faux…undershirt sleeves! Faux sounds much more chic.

They could also be called cute, and warm. I added a quick applique to Charlotte’s-it matches Sadie’s Lovebird top, which she loves. I had to add a heart, otherwise Charlotte looked like a little boy. A very pretty little boy, but nonetheless…had to girly it up a bit.

For Sadie’s top I cut up a doily and added it around the neck before I put the binding on.

Granny chic rocks!

Here’s how I made them!

Grab a doily, just make sure it’s big enough to fit your neckline, mine magically fit 5 swoops…it was meant to be. The chorus swelled, the heavens opened, all of that.

Then I trimmed it down to fit, still left some overhanging the neckline though. Pinned it down.

Then I basted it down along the top of the neckline, and along the swoops.

Trimmed the extra off…and that’s how I added the doily. Put the binding right over the top when you add it. (see one of my other knit top tutorials to see more top construction.) I cut my binding 1″ wide on the bias, ironed it in half, and sewed it to the neckline after sewing one shoulder seam together.

Now for the sleeves. I used the already hemmed sleeve-sweet! If you’re making a shirt from scratch, just make sure to cut extra for the sleeve hem. Then hem it.

Then using my sleeve pattern, I cut a rectangle (the top is folded over) from some white knit.

Then pin it underneath the top of your sleeve, making sure you will catch it when you sew.

Then sew the two pieces together, I sewed right down the middle of the double stitch.

Hem the bottom of the sleeves by folding over and sewing down. Add them to your bodice, and enjoy the cuteness!
