how to make piping

Piping.

I used to be so intimidated by it, but it adds such a fun touch to projects, and it’s so, so, sew ๐Ÿ˜‰ easy to make yourself and add a custom touch to a project. Seriously I kept thinking it would be so time consuming and hard to make my own piping, but it took hardly any time at all.

You’ll need:

piping cord
fabric
zipper foot for your sewing machine
thread (duh)

First you’ll have to cut some strips of fabric on the bias. You can see more about that here, and also see how to join the ends to make a longer strip. I cut my strips here 1.25″ wide.

Then to make the piping, simply fold the piping into the bias tape. I didn’t press the bias tape before this. Just sew close to the piping cord with the wrong sides facing, with a long, basting stitch.

Then just keep sewing it in with your zipper foot, keeping the sides lined up as much as possible.

Then tada! You’ve got some custom piping that literally took minutes. Go ahead, revel in your awesomeness. I give you permission.

  1. Great tutorial, Jess! I was too scared to make my own for the Go Anywhere bag I’m working on, so I ended up buying it. I’ll be able to make my own next time ๐Ÿ™‚ (Your bag is beautiful, by the way!)

  2. I would love to try this! I love the look it adds! I’m using my sisters machine and only have the regular foot….Need to find a zipper foot!

  3. It looks cute and easy! Now is a tutorial on how to use piping coming up? I admit it! I’ve never learned how…

  4. wow! That is awesome! I never knew… ๐Ÿ™‚ I love your go anywhere bag! Your fabrics are great! (I’m not loving mine as much as I thought I would be.) But it’s a GREAT bag! ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for the tutorial! I think I am going to go stock up on some piping cord!

  5. Thanks for your permission. I’ll be sure to revel, as soon as I get some cording. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. No surprises here but, another great tutorial Jess. I used piping for the first time in the top I made for your Libby top sew-a-long. Now that I know it won’t bite my fingers if I use it, I can see a lot of future projects adorned with it. With the help of your two tuts I will now be able to match piping on my projects with the bias tape I make!

  12. Thank you for this. It is something I’ve been too intimidated to try. I’d love to know what the best way to sew it is!

  13. Thank you for posting about piping. I didn’t know it was that easy.

I have to make pillows for 2 friends of mine. I never used piping before. I would love a tutorial on how to insert the piping, whether it be a pillow or purse. Anything would be helpful. Thanks!

  14. Love it! I’ll definitely be trying this! Thanks for the clear instructions.

  15. So nice to learn something new! Thanks!

  16. I have a few projects that are just waiting for some piping, but I kept putting them off. It was a little intimidating! So, thanks!

  17. Awesome!

  18. Like you, I think piping adds a great dimension to ones cushions and such like. However, the tutorial on how to make the bias tape was super! Mine has been a bit of a hit and miss affair, but will remember how to do it (I hope) the next time I need to – when the urge to make toys stops!! Cushions etc. are not as much fun at the moment! Am about to launch some novelties for the Christmas season – they’ll be appearing at http://www.coldhamcuddlies.etsy.com over the week-end, and I’ll post about them at http://www.ColdhamCuddliescalling.blogspot.com as well. Launched them today at a local charity bazaar, and one found a new home almost immediately! Have high hopes for them! Hope to see you, and you chums there sometime!

  19. “Go ahead, revel in your awesomeness. I give you permission.” Ha! I love it! You’re very funn and this tutorial was very timely since I will be attempting piping this week anyway. Thanks!

  20. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
