circle quilt square tutorial

I know the holidays are still months away, but I couldn’t help getting started on my big project this year-a Christmas quilt! You may have seen some of the fabric I got for it here, and I also added in some other prints from my stash, Etsy, and Joann’s. (stash-red polka dots, Joann’s red snowflakes, etsy-reindeers)
I decided to go for a circle quilt. I absolutely LOVE quilts with lots of white space, it just feels fresh and modern to me.
Also, of course…I had my Go! Baby cutter (affiliate link) do all the work for me. My circle die cut, plus a half hour of cranking fabric through and I had a huge stack of fabric.
So here’s how to do a circle applique-or, at least, some tips that might help you out.
So here’s my circle and quilt square. I cut my squares to be 6.5″x6.5″. My circle is 5″. Iron them out, well probably your fabric should already be ironed…I’m no pro quilter. lol!
Then center the circle in the middle of the square. I left 3/4″ space on each side.
Then using a zig zag stitch (you could adjust it to be closer to a satin stitch if you like) sew around the circle’s edge, back stitching at the end.
It’ll look a little wobbly…
…so another press with the iron makes it look much better!
Then repeat a bunch more times. 😉  I ended up doing 63 total squares, 7 one way, and 9 the other.
When you’ve got the squares all laid out how you’d like them-and to the size you’d like, start sewing them together! First each square in a row together, and then each row to each other, using a 1/4″ seam.
Make sure to press the seams open after each row!
Then enjoy your pretty circle quilt top. And then start thinking about finishing it in 100 degree weather…er…I think I’ll put that off for a little while. (it’s soo hot here lately!)
I’m using that reindeer print on the back….LOVE reindeers, so this makes me exceedingly happy and joyful. See? I’m already in the Christmas spirit. Fab.

  4. How cute! It will be a real treat to pull that out each December! Suz

  5. I LOVE this quilt! It’s like giant christmassy polka dots 🙂

  6. love that reindeer fabric. Its very festive even I don’t want to think about xmas’s impending arrival just yet. lol.

  7. Jess, I love this! I’m with you, I like the look of white on a quilt, and have wanted to make a Christmas one for awhile now. I really need one of those Go Baby cutters though, would make this sooo much easier!

  8. I’m going to have to try that! I agree that white space is nice and gives a modern feel.
Great pick for the backing fabric – I might have to buy some of that… I certainly want to!

  9. You can prevent the puckering (being wobbly) when you applique your circle on by putting a piece of regular printer paper under the bottom fabric while you stitch. (Circle, white fabric, printer paper) After you have stitched around your circle, tear the paper off from the outside and inside of the circle. There will still be a little bit of paper in the stitching, but it will disappear when you wash it. Try it out for anything you applique – the paper helps the feed dogs pull the paper evenly! Super cute quilt!

  10. Great job! Makes me want a go baby cutter too! 🙂 LOVE the reindeers, too!!!

  11. Cute, and very seasonal

  12. So cute! Looks a lot like the one I made for my brother’s wedding–I love the look of circle quilts. Now that I have a circle cutter, I’m going to have to make more!

I don’t know how you did it, but I centered my circles on the squares by folding both the squares and the circles into quarters and pressing the point, and then matching up the fold lines (if that makes any sense at all). Made it so easy, especially since you have to press out the wonkiness anyway. Easier than measuring, for me at least.

I’m excited to see how you bind and finish it. 🙂

  13. LOVE the circle quilt in traditional Christmas colors.

  14. Maravilhoso! Parabéns pela paciência.

  15. It’s so pretty! You’re amazing.

  16. What a fun quilt! Now I just need to win one of those cutters (or the lottery hahaha), so I can have pretty circles. . . .

  17. Super cute quilt!!

Would you ever consider doing a How-To type series for a simple/small quilt? I have wanted to try to make a quilt for awhile now but am intimidated by it- but you always make projects look so fun and do-able! 🙂

  18. Oh wow!! It looks way more technical than what you showed in the tut! Fantastic!

  19. I love your circle quilt. If I didn’t want a cutter I do know 🙂
