dress-to-be

I have big plans for this awesome vintage sheet to become a maxi dress. I about fell over in shock when I found this thrifting the other day, since I usually don’t find awesome prints like this where I live. (and in pristine condition!)
I’m totally copying my cousin in law Courtenay with this pattern and style, but she’s taller than me and can totally work the maxi dress look, so hopefully it doesn’t look ridiculous on me. (I’m a shortie) Any other short gals out there get away with wearing maxi dresses? At least I can always chop some off if it’s too long.ย

Sooo….that’s one of my projects on my to do list. What’s on yours?

  2. Have just connected with you on facebook. What happens to your offcuts that you cannot make clothes with? Do you use them for patchworks or do you throw them away? I spent years keeping them, then went into quilting, now use them for dressing my toys. Maybe, we could do some swapping?

  3. cant wait to see the finished product! im all about the vintage sheet recycling xo

I found this same pattern sheet last year and I made myself a pair of PJ pants. They are my favorite ones. The sheet material is the perfect weight. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. i’m 5’5″ and the maxi dress looks aewsome on me. You can totally wear one being on the shorter side!

  14. I nearly always wear ankle length dresses or skirts, and I’m only 5 foot 3. I like wearng empire line dresses. I figure that way the skirt length is about the same as for a ‘normal’ height woman! haha

  15. Lucky find! Really loving View B of that pattern. I’m sure your dress will be perfect!

  16. Love that sheet! I have found before at the thrift store here. The print is even better in person so I know you must love it!

  17. I think a maxi dress look great on everyone. I can’t wait to see it.

I have a maxi dress that fits funny on the top so on my “to do list” is to turn it into a skirt.

  18. I’m a shortie ๐Ÿ˜› I have always been a bit skeptical about trying the maxi dresses but I have a friend (just as short) who looks fabulous in them! Go ahead and give it a try! if it doesn’t suit, you can always shorten it!

amazing post! I’m a new follower!

  19. Love your great blog.
I am also a shortie 5’2 and I wore maxi dresses while I was pregnant and now after too.
I was always too scared to wear them as I felt the same as you but really you can wear anything if you have the confidence to pull it off!

  20. Yay for your awesome find! It’s such a cute print! And I can’t wait to see the dress!

  21. That print is gorgeous! It looks like liberty of London. Can’t wait to see the dress!!!

  22. Such an awesome find!! “They” (fashion experts) claim everyone looks good in a maxi dress. I was a bit skeptical but got one from my neighbor for free and think it looks better on me (5’4”) than expected. Anyway, like you said, if you don’t like it, you can always cut it to a shorter length and maybe even reuse the bottom section as a skirt for you or something for your little cuties!

  23. I just found this site: http://sewingpatterns.com/sewingframe.php?mdl=http://www.printsew.com/click2print/sewingpatterns/index.php?goto=free-neu10140
and you can totally get a free pattern, it took me a few minutes to get it sent to me, but it was totally worth it, I’m planning on making the 4116, but I’ll be changing it a little bit. I think on my short frame it will look pretty awesome. Now, I just need to find the perfect fabric, actually I have the perfect fabric, but it’s out of print, and I don’t have enough of it. So, on to finding a new print.

  24. AWESOME find with that sheet! You’re inspiring me to get back on the thrift path! So creative – and yes, you can pull off a maxi dress! (Even if you might need heels… I’m 5’3 and need them to pull it off, but hey…)

Thanks for sharing! I’m a new follower and love your blog!

  25. Cute!! You can totally pull it off!! I am a shorty and I wear Maxi Dresses all the time!! I can’t wait to see it!! I love it!!

  26. I’m having lot of fun with repurposed vintage linen at the moment – http://milaandcuatro.blogspot.com/ – regarding your maxi dress I think you need to make sure the print isn’t too large. I have a small frame and large prints don’t look good on me.

  27. Love the fabric!

  28. I’m 5’2″ and I wear empire waist maxi dresses ALL THE TIME!!! They’re so comfortable, especially when they’re made of knit fabric. Most of them end up being a couple inches too long, but I can always re-hem them if I want too. But, honestly, I kinda like that they’re a little long, so I can wear high heels or ballet flats and just barely have my shoes peep out.

I really don’t understand the whole short women can’t wear long dresses thing…it’s ridiculous. I don’t think it makes me look shorter at all. Who came up with that “rule”? maxi dresses make anyone look taller. I mean, that’s why they wore empire waisted long dresses in the Regency era–make everyone look tall and column-esque.

  29. oooooh, love the fabric, what a wonderful find.

on my craft to-do list is a dahlia brooch, a ‘lost socks’ sign with pegs for the laundry and some map placemats!

just need to ge tthe baby to sleep more so i’m not so tired and can start them!!

  30. Wow your sewing ability is awesome! Wish I could sew! ๐Ÿ™‚ Glad to find your blog…

  31. Japan always has fun look.

    I’๏ฝ a new follower.ใ€€

  32. I’m 5’1 – and I can never pull off the long maxi dresses. *sigh* Oh well! At least we get to wear cute shorter things ๐Ÿ™‚ Just stumbled across this blog, and the stuff that you make is amazing!

  33. Oh goodness!! Lucky you for finding that! That sheet is beautiful! I’m a little jealous.
I’m tall (5’11”) and therefore have to MAKE my own maxi dresses since they don’t come in my length requirements practically EVER. But I think they look just fine on shorter women too! And empire waists tend to be flattering no matter who wears them. If you want to avoid having to place a zipper (since this is non stretch) you might want to do shirring in the upper back and in the empire waist chunk. Just make the pieces a bit wider than they would otherwise be called for. ๐Ÿ˜€

  34. oh my gosh. You have over 3500 followers. WOAH! Cool JESS! Can i get your auograph??
    HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

  35. this seems so interesting and fun! I wish I knew how to do this type of stuff.

    -new follower =D

  36. My cousin requested I make her a maxi dress (anthro knock-off), but I just can’t find good fabric for it! Lucky you.
p.s. I’ve seen short girls pull off the maxi dress very well! ๐Ÿ™‚

  37. Something about that print reminds me of Heather Ross’ designs. Great find!

  38. I have that same sheet in my closet with 2 pillowcases, as well. It hadn’t really crossed my mind to cut them up, since they are such nice, well, sheets! Now I’m reconsidering. I’ll wait to see how the print looks constructed into a garment.

Be sure and post the after of the dress.

  39. Love the sheet! Yesterday I found a vintage sheet in it’s plastic, unopened. First time for me, it was thrilling! It’s such a pretty yellow, green and white print. I’m going to make a sundress from the Resew book.

  40. I’m a REAL shortie, (I’m 4’10) and even though I can only fit into the maxis in the childrens department, I can still pull them off, and if I can pull of a maxi, so can everyone else

  41. it’s very nice blog

  42. You can try verticle patterns for maxi dresses…those tend to make anyone look long and lanky no matter their actual height. Just a thought! ๐Ÿ™‚

  43. I’m short and “plus sized” and I love a maxi dress. The trick is a proper fitting bodice and a hem that’s not too long (dragging, sagging etc.)- somewhere between the ankle and the point where your calf starts to narrow is good!
