the Anna dress (sew along)

tada! Another dress! (try to control your excitement)
I don’t often sew with solids (I’m a print lova), but I fell in love with this little dress when it was all said and done. Something about the simplicity of the design (and slight vintage flair) appealed to me immensely. Plus, I made it with some cheap inexpensive shirting so the whole dress cost about $5 to make. Booyah!
I named it the Anna dress after many Anna’s-my sister (Jo-anna), my soon to be sister in law, Anna, and my good pal Anna, who always is a sewing inspiration.

I love the gathered waist and waistband, and the big white buttons! (ignore that stray thread hanging down on the right side….OH NO now you’re all looking at it!)
STOP LOOKING AT THE THREAD!
Anyways…er haha. I was inspired by a dress from Tulle, and basically copied it except for the back. (their back is a bit carazay!) I did change the sleeves into little puffy sleeves to up the cutesy factor.
Show me the back Sadie! lol. What a poser. In a good way.
It goes without saying that she loves the dress-besides picking at the buttons she left it on! For a whole day! (almost) Which is a small miracle in and of itself.Β
My fav part is the lining fabric! peek a boo!
Wanna hear the best part!? I’ll show ya how to make this dress for May’s sew along! Pattern and all, I’ll hold your hand step by step through this dress. Yay!Β
Here’s the supply list:
main fabric:
how muchΒ  you’ll need depends on your child’s size. I used a yard for a 2T
lining fabric:
again, I used a yard, but I lined everything since my fabric was slightly see through. If you’re using quilting weight cotton for the main fabric, you’ll just need enough to line the bodice. So, 1/2 yd would be plenty in most cases. (I usually use a lightweight muslin for lining, but it’s up to your preferences, of course)
buttons
matching thread
lightweight, iron on interfacing (just enough for the waistband, I used some scraps I had)
that’s it! The sew along will take place next week, May 9-13! So see you there!

P.S. I also have another version I made in a print to show you on Friday. It’s STINKIN’ cute.

Oh yeah, and since I’m a dork and interested in dressing like my daughter, I would LOVE this one in an adult size. πŸ˜‰ That’s not too much to ask right? Teehee!

  7. I sooooo want to do this in a 4t (possibly 2t as well for my other daughter) BUT I am sooo scared to try because I can’t figure out the tension and I suck at sewing straight lines!

    Any tips????

  23. This is adorable. I can’t wait to make this for my oldest. What size range will the dress be. I have another little one coming in June and would love to make matching dresses for the girls, even if it would be a Fall dress, it stays hot here in Alabama till December sometimes. Love it!!!

  24. That is beautiful! I love the solid blue and how it’s slightly vintage. I’m going to have to blow this up and make it for myself!

  25. Okay, seriously, you suck me in every.single.time. Can you get any more amazing? (Don’t answer that, I am sure you can.) Jess, I am in love with this one. I think it just might suck me into this sew along. Next week is a CRAZY one for me…so I might be a week behind, but I want to make this dress. Is it dumb to do it if you don’t even have a daughter? Maybe one of my nieces need one???? Or, I just hang it in the closet as a “Maybe someday” Ya, probably not that one. But, I want to make this dress. Love.

  26. You are so ridiculously talented! I want to sew along, making one for me! I’m sharing this on my facebook page. πŸ™‚

  27. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! I just adore this dress and can’t wait to join in this sew along πŸ™‚

  28. I love this!! Something else to add to my sewing list. Thanks so much for the sew alongs. I LOVE them!

  29. Wow! I would really want to participate this time! Is it possible to post the pattern drafting part first so I can cut my patterns and fabric over the weekend as I find it a drag to draw patterns and cut from fabric after 9pm on weekdays (after baby is asleep!) after a day’s work. Pattern making and fabric cutting is my least favourite part of clothes sewing, the sewing part is fine and quick though! Hope you will consider!
