homemade fabric weights

I made these weights for cutting out patterns the other day.ย
I say “made” loosely.
Took me about 2 minutes.
Here’s how:
Buy 8 BIG nut thingys from the hardware store, and tape two together with tape (I used Gorilla glue tape) and tada!
Easy and cheap weights to hold your patterns down-no more pinning! These work best when used with a rotary cutter.
Total cost was $4 since I had the tape on hand. Sah-weet!( I think I say that too much)
That fabric above is for an upcoming project-which I can’t wait to show you! I just hope I make it to the second week of Project Run and Play-I love how that week’s project turned out!

Isn’t that fabric gorg? LOVE.

  1. This is a great idea!!!

  2. Phew! I saw “weights” and thought you were going to recommend exercise over sewing. Glad it ain’t so (at least as far as this post goes ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. What a great idea! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Great idea! I saw pattern weights for the first time in a photo in one of my Japanese sewing books. Do they really work? Do you really not have to pin? I wasn’t sure if you were supposed to do both. I would LOVE to not have to pin, but it just seems too good to be true!

  5. I’ve been thinking about making some pattern weights as well. This seems like a much easier solution than what I was thinking up. Thanks Jess.

  6. what a great idea, i do NOT like pinning! I just might have to take this idea! and I love that fabirc!!!

  7. Jess, this is brilliant. I use the craziest things to weigh my fabric down. I’m too cheap to buy the real ones. I’m totally getting the supplies today. Thank You!

  8. Oh good grief! Why did I never think of that? Here I am pinning down whole dresses with about 4 pins for the whole thing just so I don’t have to go through all the extensive pinning. LOVE the weights idea. Now my hubby will want to know why I’m at the hardware store…

  9. I totally thought you had made your own hand weights by the title. I was already picturing in my mind cans attached to a pole finished off with some lovely girlie fabric just to keep you stylish. Hahaha.

So excited about you in that contest. Can’t wait to see everything you do. I am sure it will be fabulous.

  10. I love it! I remember my mom using kitchen butter knives, but this is so much cuter.

  11. do you find fabric weights and a rotary cutter easier and faster than pinning? I was cutting out a pattern last night and it was taking forever and I was thinking maybe its time I invested in some pattern weights and a rotary cutter because this pinning is starting to kill me!

  12. I WANT THE WEIGHTS AND THE FABRIC.

  13. So clever, Jess. They look very professional. Love this idea… I hate pinning!

  14. It sure beats using tuna cans! I also use Xlarge washers wrapped in ribbon. Check em out, they almost look like candy.
