happy halloween from under the sea

Introducing: The Little Mermaid cast

Sadie as Ariel, of course. The wig only lasted about an hour-but I was shocked it lasted that long!

Rory as King Triton.. He looked fantastic! Very recognizable, (and handsome) I thought. He didn't like eating his wig half the time, but anyways...his was probably my favorite.

Charlotte was Sebastian the crab. She was a bit-er-crabby all night. (hahaehehe)

and I was Ursula, of course! complete with voice stealing shell and tentacles.

I like this photo-Ursula's supposed to be mean so I played the part. Sadie told anyone who would listen that she was the little mermaid. Charlotte drooled most of the night, and Rory sweat a couple pounds off in his muscle suit.

Sadie and her best little friend Rayne were so cute together! Rayne was Daphne, and her whole family dressed up as characters from Scooby Doo. Rayne kept telling me to steal people's voices all night-LOL!

We did trunk or treating at our church's Halloween party, so I dressed up our car like we were under the sea-complete with flounder, jellyfish, Nemo, Marlin, and Dory, seaweed, etc.

What can I say? I love me a theme! Sadie won Cutiest Costume...not sure if that's a mis spell...but she loved her little award. :D

mirror mirror on the wall...

Who's the fairest of them all? In this house-it's Sadie! She definitely has the prettiest clothes of us all.

As you can tell, I've been on a dress up kick-I can't resist all that costume fabric on sale at Joanns! This dress only set me Rory back about $4. Can't beat that. Seriously. I'd like to see someone try. ;)

I love her little toddler belly poking out the bodice. haha. I used the Sadie shirt bodice pattern again...and the sleeves were so fun! I had the idea to pleat the red so it would look more...slashed sleeve-esque.

hmm. You know what I mean?

I took pics for the sleeves so I'll put up a tutorial sometime!

Of course I had to make a bow headband to match! Thanks to my pal Cassy-she saved the day with the red satin-they were out of it at Joann's! They were out of yellow also, but I kinda like the gold, so it worked out.

new and improved Cinderella dress+Tinkerbell

awww...my little princess! She totally flipped out when I pulled this out after her nap the other day to show her! She cried OHHH! and then of course proceeded to rip her clothes off and wore it the rest of the day, showing it off to Rory and my sister. I just loove reactions like that! Makes me want to sew dress up all day long! hehe.

You probably recognize the dress right? I used this tutorial-great one by the way! I er, messed up a little on the bodice and made it too long, so it's pinned up a little, hence the weird bunchiness. (wha? that's a word)

It's fixed now, but also a little dirty and I don't feel like forcing doing another photo shoot with Sadie-so just imagine it looking normal. haha.

And now, total Princess pose! hehe.

Also, I made this quick and easy Tinkerbell dress from the same site.  I made mine a little differently-it's not two pieces like the tutorial, I just gathered and sewed the skirt to the bodice piece, and didn't make the bodice a leotard. She loves it and spends most of her days changing between these two dresses.

Ah, the life of a toddler, where the only thing to worry about is what dress to wear.

another version of the sadie shirt

Using the same pattern used for the Sadie shirt, I made this totally different looking shirt.

I love when patterns are so versatile!

(also, please pretend all the the random broken pavers in our backyard are construction-site-chic, please. it's a work in progress.)

I love the puffy gathered sleeves and tie back.

(her hair is getting crazy long!)

Sadie liked it a lot too, she called it her blue shirt. She's nothing if not blatantly obvious.

So here's how I veered from the Sadie shirt. I cut my bottom panel a bit wider-the picture shows a lot wider than I actually used-I ended up chopping off two inches on both ends. Then I gathered it along the top and sewed it to the bodice piece.

The sleeves are a basic gathered sleeve-easy once you've done some! Make it and Love it has a good basic one in her Cinderella dress tutorial-which I made for the Sadester-pics to come!

Anyways-it's fun to play around and come up with new shirts with the same pattern!

paper pumpkin tutorial

I'm sure you've seen these around, right? An easy, cheap way to make some cute fall decor. gotta love that! PLus, Sadie helped me with these. Well, she handed me strips of paper until she got bored and wanted to use the hole punch by herself.

"SADIE DO IT!".

We here that a lot around here these days. That, and "me? mine?" Mostly when we go to the store. She thinks anything with Belle or Cinderella on it was made for her, and her only. Anyways, getting off the subject!

Soo..

new hair(s)

Due to popular demand....(ok, three of you), here is a picture of my new 'do. Why must I make ridiculous faces and poses in my pictures? Ah, if I only knew. Plus if I made a modely face you all would bust out laughing...anyways, it's my natural color so it's nice to not have to worry about roots so much.

In a momma's life, roots are one of the lowest priorities, right below shaving your legs, and cleaning baseboards. Am I right?

So...there's my hair. :D

what we've been up to...

lots of dress up (hence the topless-ness of Sadie, she was in between costume changes) and crooked grinning.

some baking in my new apron-bread, banana walnut muffins, tamale pie, and yummy shortbread toffee bars...not the prettiest dessert ever, but definitely tasty! (they're almost gone, so that's a good indicator) (er, and I may have eaten most of them)

picnic lunches every day on the floor, with star sandwiches, of course! (in her new bee bell tinkerbell dress)

this little miss hasn't been feeling too good-but she's a champ and will still smile away at you. Except when that black thing is shoved in her face.

My Ursula costume is 95% done! aren't you on the edge of your seat with excitement and anticipation?

also I got a haircut and color-my first since....APril. sheesh! my roots were a sad mess. Thanks mom! I feel like a new woman. No more blond either. I decided to go back to my roots, at least until I get sick of them? ;)

By the way- I'm LOVING all the fun shirts you're making and posting in the flickr group! So fun :D Can't wait to do a round up here and show you all off!

sew along part 2: bodice and placket

So today we'll sew together the bodice and placket.

(edit: this is not the only way to do it...reader Tara saw a much better way, to sew the placket together and then sew it on top of the bodice, no cutting involved. Both ways work-just make sure it's centered if you sew it directly to the uncut bodice piece. So, pick your poison essentially!)
