some refashions of late…

First off- a huge THANK YOU to everyone who stopped by for Barbie week last week. I had such a blast making those clothes and tutorials-and I’m afraid I still haven’t gotten sick of them yet. ๐Ÿ˜‰ If you have had trouble getting the pattern for the knit shirt, it should work now…but I’m an idiot novice at this pattern thing, so please forgive any idiot novice mistakes! If you make any clothes-PLEASE consider adding them to the Flickr group. It makes me happy. ๐Ÿ˜‰ There’s some new stuff in the group-go check it out-soo cute!

So…on to the non-barbie, cute real-kid pictures! (last week felt pretty plasticy here on ye’ old blog)

I got a few skirts the other day week at the Salvation Army 50% off sale-for less than $2 each-with the idea of refashioning them into dresses for the Sadester. This first one is made from a shirt that I thrifted ages ago-before I even sewed! wow! I don’t know how it escaped getting cut apart for so long.

In my opinion, it’s much cuter as a dress. Sadie agrees-this was her favorite-and the one she insisted on wearing for the day. ah, I love that she likes the stuff I make! (most of the time, see farther below)
It has some elastic in the back bodice panel, and some gathered elastic sleeves. Can you tell I love using elastic?
a before pic.
Dress #2-I didn’t love this fabric until I held it up to Sadie in the store. ADORABLE. And perfect for fall. Plus, her being a redhead doesn’t hurt-she can wear those awesome fall colors. This was her second favorite.
I added a little flower cause it needed a little something…used my poufy flower tutorial-version two.
a fabric covered button completes it. The side zipper worked fine for the refashion-just so’s you know…don’t avoid those. I used to.

Now, Sadie’s (and mine) least favorite. I love the print, just couldn’t get the straps to look right. I didn’t have enough fabric left to do anything besides a tiny spaghetti strap…so I did white straps. Maybe I’ll do the small strap-it might look better. I am probably too lazy to change it though.

I added a little ribbon bow to try and make up for the straps.
before.

All in all-I love refashioning-half the work is done for you! hooray for that.

  1. So adoreable!! You always make me want so badly to go find a bunch of thrift store clothes to refashion for Kadie, but I’m not as good at it!! (sigh) Maybe I just need to force myself so I’ll get more practice. But those are so cute!! Well done!

  2. They are so cute! Would you consider doing a tutorial on how you transform a skirt to a dress?

  13. These are darling! I’d also be interested in a mini tutorial if it’s not too annoying for you to do. ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. love the first one so much!

  15. I would love a tutorial also if you don’t mind! ๐Ÿ™‚ These are adorable! I need to get better at seeing the potential of things at the thrift store.

  16. giveawayyyyy ๐Ÿ˜‰

  17. Those dresses are super cute! I agree with Sadie..the first one is definately my favourite. Love the elastic sleeves.

  18. My little ones are all grown up now, but I’m so inspired by your refashions. These are all fantastic, and your daughter is very fortunate to have a creative and talented mother! When I have grandkids one day, I’m totally using your ideas. ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. I love this blog! I think you are supermom, and I hope that when I have children that I can be as creative, loving, and fun as you are with your little girls. Keep up the good work… you are an inspiration!

  24. I love these dresses. Did you use a pattern or just wing it?

  25. Tutorial is in the works! Look for that soon. Zaaberry-I wing it when refashioning-it’s fun…doesn’t always work out-but it’s a fun way to practice without wasting the expensive fabric!

  26. This is going to sound very strange, but I found this amazing vintage sheet from Goodwill today in the hopes of using it to make my daughter’s easter dress with it. These dresses that you have the elastic on the sleeves, did you use the same idea as the Ice Cream Social dress? Did you just add elastic on the other side of the strap and make them a little wider to create that cap sleeve effect? I would love to know, I think this would be perfect for her Easter dress!
