felt movie snacks tutorial

Hi, and welcome to felt movie snacks 101! (imagine that in a movie announcer voice. ok, I’m lame. moving on..) Thanks to Anna who came up with this fun Spice up your Kitchen week idea!

I had this idea to make a felt candy bar, you know, like the one who’s name rhymes with Smershey? Anyways, then the movie snack theme got away from me (pardon the fact that it doesn’t have much to do with a kitchen), and a bag of popcorn got made too! yumm…although am I the only one who sits down with a bowl of ice cream or snack, and then finishes it before the opening credits are over? grrr.

Click below for more!

So, for the candy bar you’ll need:

brown felt
white felt
matching thread
velcro
sewing stuff (machine, pins, and a ruler and rotary cutter are very handy!

Ok, so first you’ll cut out your pieces:

3 pieces of brown felt 6 inches x 3 inches
12 pieces of brown felt 1 1/4 inch x 3/4 inch

Now you’ll arrange the smaller pieces on one of the larger pieces like so, pinning each one down. Make sure to leave room around the edge to sew all the layers together later.

Sew each rectangle on. (it seems tedious but goes quickly! promise!)

looks like a chocolate bar already, huh? don’t eat it.

now, stack your other two pieces under your top, pin, and sew around the edge.

tada!
now for the wrapper. Cut out one piece of brown felt 7 1/2 inches x 5 3/4 inches. Cut out a piece of sew on velcro to fit the 5 3/4″ side, I ended up trimming off a little on each side so it wouldn’t stick out at all. So about 5 1/2 inches worked for me.

Sew on your velcro to the edges, to form an envelope of sorts.

like this! Now for the letters. I tried to find a font that would work, but to no avail. I ended up free handing the letters, that’s why some of them are a little wonky. It just adds to the charm, I think. (right?)

A great tip for cutting out felt (wool felt at least, I’m not sure if this would work with craft felt or not), is to draw the shape you want on the paper side of freezer paper, then iron to the felt, and cut it out. It gives you a nice clean edge, and peels right off the felt after you’re done. (I didn’t get a picture of that cause my camera’s battery chose that moment to die. of course)

I made my letters about 2 1/2 inches tall, and the width varied. Just make sure they fit your wrapper!

now sew the letters down with white thread, trying to keep them lined up as much as possible.

cute, no?

hey you’re done! with the chocolate bar.

next: Popcorn! yum.

for this project you’ll need:

white felt
red felt
off white felt
blue felt
red and white thread
small amount of poly-fil
pinking shears are handy for this one

First we’ll make the bag: cut out two pieces of white felt 7 1/2 inches x 9 inches. Then cut out two-two inch squares on the bottom (didn’t get a picture of that, sorry)

You can see where I cut the corners off in this pic. Now cut out 8 strips of red felt 7 1/2 inches x 1/2 inch wide. Lay them out like to to create some fun stripes!

Using your red thread, sew down the strips. (again, goes pretty quick, I used a longer stitch too, to go a bit faster, plus it looks better I think!)

Now you can trim with pinking shears or leave it straight across, your choice!

Cut out a circle from your blue felt (I found something about 2 3/4 inches in diameter and that fit the area pretty well)

Sew that down on one side over the stripes. Then cut out some popcorn shapes from the off white felt and sew those down. Or you could do letters too, but I was sick of those from the chocolate bar. ๐Ÿ˜‰

With right sides together, pin and sew down the sides and the bottom. (where it’s pinned in the pictures is where you sew) About a 1/4 inch seam.

Pinch the bottom parts together like so, pin, and sew across, back stitching at the beginning and end of your seam. 1/4 inch seam again.

Turn right side out, trim your threads! (i didn’t…oops), and you have a popcorn bag!

Now for the popcorn. Cut out a pattern for your popcorn. The less bumps around the edge, the easier/faster it is to sew. Mine were pretty large too, I didn’t want them to be choking hazards. They’re about 2 1/2 inches x 2 inches.

From your off white felt, cut out two pieces from your pattern per popcorn piece…however many you need to fill your bag!

Sew around the edges, leaving a space for stuffing.

Stuff a small bit of poly fil in and sew shut!

fill your bag, and you’re in business! The business of fake concession stands!

Pop in your favorite movie and pretend to munch away! (we’re Disney fans, can you tell?)

Thanks Anna, for asking me to participate in Spice up your Kitchen week, hope you all liked the tutorial! Let me know if you have any questions!
