birdie mobile tutorial

Here’s how I made a simple, easy, and cute little mobile for the new nursery.

You’ll need:

wool felt (or craft felt if that’s what you’ve got)
fabric scraps
yarn or ribbon
embroidery hoop
ribbon to cover hoop
small amount of poly fill

sewing stuff: machine, pins, thread, yada yada

First, draw a simple bird shape and cut it out to be your stencil. I used the one I made for my birdie onesies. Then do the same for a wing shape. Cut out two pieces of felt for each birdie, and two wings.

Sew the wings to the birdies…make sure you do this on opposite sides, like the picture below. Otherwise you’ll have to unpick your wing and do it again, like I did.

I ironed my pieces flat at this point, on the wool setting of course!

Then you’ll pin your pieces, wrong sides together, sandwiching your yarn between the two pieces at the top of the birdie.

Sew around the birdie, about 1/8 inch from the edge…leaving about 2 inches of space for filling it with your poly fil.

Stuff it with your poly fil..not too much though! Just enough to give it a little belly. aww..

Then, sew the opening closed, and you’re done with your birdie! Repeat as desired…I made five birdies with different colors/fabrics.

Then what I did was string them through the embroidery hoop, wiggled them around til I liked the placement, and then I tightened the hoop so it kept the yarn in place. Then I made a knot where all the yarn pieces came together and hung it on a hook from the ceiling. Oh, and hot glued a piece of ribbon around the hoop to pretty it up a tad.

Quick and painless! Sadie loves her tweet tweets….although they’re not hers for much longer! Poor thing is up for a rude awakening in a few months!

P.S. My sewing machine is (supposedly) working! I get it back today. Hopefully this stupid bobbin issue is resolved…I’ve got a stack of projects I’ve been dying to get started on!

  6. Aww, that is so cute. Perfect for spring! Thanks so much for sharing, I’ll be linking to this.

  7. Love your mobile! I made this one
(http://www.spoolsewing.com/blog/2008/05/16/bird-mobile/ )when my daughter was born and attached the birds to spray painted branches from my yard. She ripped it down when she was about 1 (I think she’s freakishly tall!) and I’ve been trying to decide what to do with the remains now. I’m loving the embroidery hoop idea and just might steal it!

  8. this is so cute and ironically, you posted it the same day that max’s old mobile stopped working! i just might have to make this!

  9. I love it! Thanks for explaining it so simply that even a beginner sewer like me can get it 😉

  10. Saw this, loved it, needed it, made it. That’s all. Thank you for posting something simple enough that a craft-challenged person like me could make something cute…it gives me much hope and great joy for future craft endeavors…

  11. Thank you for having a simple and doable tutorial! This is just what i want for my son’s mobile!

  12. I saw pretty much the exact same thing for over $100 at a baby boutique the other day!

The hoop was covered in fabric as well, but pretty much the same. I said to my sister, “I can make that for less than $20”, and now I know that I can!

  13. Thank God I found this! I saw it months ago but when i came back to pin it I couldn’t find it… So glad! 🙂 I’m making this for my niece. Thank you 😀

  14. Hi Jess! This is soooo incredibly adorable, I made one for my son, with a few changes in the hanging.

Sorry that I don’t have a flickr account to share my pics up there with you!

  15. Your birdie mobile is really, really cute. I just love it. My blog page is – cre8ivesurprises.blogspot.com

  16. This is super cute! We’re having a baby in the Spring (birdies – perfect!) and I’m having all of my sewing savvy friends and family (scattered all across the country) make 1 bird, then I’m going to put them together in a mobile so the baby can be watched over by everyone who loves him/her. 🙂

  17. How big did you make the birds?

  18. This is very lovely! My grownup sister’s name is Robyn, so I will be making one for her — with appropriate bird markings. She will love it, I’m sure.
I would include one safety caveat — this mobile absolutely should NOT be used over a baby’s crib! The strings (etc) are too easily broken and could then become wrapped around dangerous places, or sucked on and swallowed. Even inadvertent breeze (from door closing?) could drop it into baby’s range.

So Very pretty, so very easy, so very much for an away-from-bed decoration.

That said, I LOVE this sweet mobile. And just realized I want one for myself too — perfect Yule decoration for next year. Cardinals perhaps?
