getting there…

my dad called me this morning. “I have a few hours, want to come over and work on the kitchen?”

“can mom watch sadie? yes? i’m there!”

so this is what we got done. it’s going pretty quickly! obviously, on the right is the fridge/freezer, and on the left is the oven, in the middle will be the sink, with a cabinet underneath. i plan to make a window above the sink, and a shelf above the oven. i have to figure out what i want to paint it though…it’s hard! no clue. any suggestions? i don’t want to use primary/bright colors. i think i will be painting the oven silver, but not the fridge…and i have plans for the “wall”. so excited!

  1. OMG! Seriously! I love this! I have a 17 month old son who is currently obsessed with the kitchen: the cabinets and drawers that open and shut, mixing things in bowls, the utensil drawer – you name it, he’s in it! I hope you will post a few notes as to how about creating this fantastic project – my husband isn’t really a tool kind of guy so I would have to do this myself!

Good luck finishing this up! I can’t wait to see the finished result! :0)

  2. That looks awesome! I’ve been saving different links for homemade play kitchens so that my hubby can make one for our little girls 2 year birthday. I really love yours! Make sure to show us all your completed kitchen (and any tips you have would be great!)

  3. We are also making a wood kitchen for Christmas. I found this amazing magnetic paint at the store the other day. We are using that for the fridge so magnets will stick (we have all the leapfrog fridge things).
I am stuck for ideas for the rest though.

  4. Thanks for the comments guys! Holly, I want to do the same thing with the magnetic paint on the fridge. How much was it, do you remember? I will have to check it out next time i’m at the hardware store!

  5. Ours was RustOleum.
I think it was about 20 for 16oz.
Which is supposed to cover 25 sq. feet.
You still need a top coat (the magnetic stuff is cement gray).

  6. that is so cute! i can’t wait to see the end product…and yes post lots of tips and pointers so when i make one i can refer to this! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Oh my goodness… it is already looking so cute! And how much fun to get to work on it with your dad! I think pale colors would be so cute. Pink and purple and yellow or something like that. Whatever you do I know it will be perfect.

  17. WOW!!!!!! That is looking soooo nice. I’m very impressed. I think I’m painting my girls kitchen the red and aqua/turquoise colors, but have definitely not decided yet. I think that’s the hardest part to decide!!

  18. What a great idea for little ones! I plan on refinishing the one my grandfather made for me eventually. ๐Ÿ™‚
You could use black chalkboard paint on the fridge door of the magnetic material is too much.
You could also put fabric over the back as wallpaper or use real wallpaper to add more color than paint. Paint would be cute too!! Ohh the options…

  19. my dad made us a kitchen when my sister and i were kids, it was soo much fun – but definitely not quite as cool as this one is sure to be! Can’t wait to see what its like when its done!

  20. It’s coming along quick! I love it! You are such an awesome mom.

  21. For a color idea, we just recently assembled the kitchen we bought and I love the color combination. The color is more muted than how it came out in the pics, but you can see it here:

  22. This is going to be so cool. You are so cool.

  23. This is great! I really want to make one for my kids too. My kids are bigger and it looks like it might be fun to do with them.

  24. how awesome is that! I wish I had the know how to make an awesome kitchen like that!

  25. Jess, the kitchen is coming along great. Our Home Depot has that magnetic paint, black board and glow in the dark paint. I used the glow in the dark paint for a youth activity and it worked great, I would assume the magnetic paint works well if you follow the directions.

  26. Wow it is looking so good !!!

  27. This is brilliant, I’m so impressed! Saw it on Ohdeedoh, great work – I would have been in make-believe heaven with a kitchen set up like this when I was little! Lovely blog, cheers from sunny New Zealand
