pleated neckline tutorial

alright, so this is in no way a new idea…but it’s my take on updating a shirt with some fun ruffly-looking pleats! basically, while i was getting dressed i saw this shirt and said,”BINGO! that needs some ruffly pleated things.” and, 20 minutes later, this shirt was done. quick and painless!

you’ll need:

a tired boring shirt. wrinkly bottom optional.

a small pile of fabric strips, i cut mine 3/4 inch wide, on the bias so as to minimalize fraying.

now the fun part, you kinda just get to go crazy and do whatever. this looks awesome the less perfect it is.

when you start, turn your edge under to keep the raw edge under. then, tuck, pleat, whatever! i didn’t pin, just did it an inch at a time or so. when you run out, simply tuck the new edge under a pleat and keep going!

cute, no?

a close up shot of the neckline.

easy and makes me want to wear this shirt again!

  2. So cute! I love your blog.

  3. Cute! I’ll have to try this one out!!

  4. is this what you did on my girls’ shirts? or did you actually gather those pieces and sew them on? i’ve been wondering!

  5. Love the idea of a make-over for old(er) clothes…. I’ve been trying to get rid of some stuff in my very full closet, but it can be heart-breaking…. now this idea might keep my closet full but with shirts that I actually will wear!
    Thanks for the idea.
